We didn’t realize that this was a 3 day weekend, so the crowd-size caught me off-guard. The ski rental area was packed out!😬 In spite of the large crowds, the staff worked hard to make the lines run efficiently and everyone I dealt with was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed skiiing the backside of the mountain, sticking mostly to greens. The trees were beautiful, with lots of fun little man-made runs between them. My son loved the little bumps and paths, choosing to run those routes over the actual ski runs. Beginning skiers be warned.....getting down the mountain after the lift closes at 4pm is no joke. It is a very long run, and even though it is labeled a green, felt way steeper like a blue. I was so relieved to finally make it to the bottom. Other than that, it was an enjoyable day.
We also did the tubing one night and I really thought it would be a bust, especially for the price. Boy was I wrong! My kids absolutely loved it! They came down much faster than I thought, and the attendants would spin them if requested. My son is already asking to go back. Don’t let the price deter you, because it was a super fun night. The only suggestion I would do is pick the 4:30 time slot because it gets sooooo cold once the sun goes down.

My family with three teenagers (15, 13, 12) visited here and did the long tubing hill and the Hidden Treasure Aerial Park. Both activities got huge thumbs up from all 3 kids.

The tubing is on “Gold Rush” hill and the operators do a great job getting them pushed off for fast downhill speed. It is $30 for an hour of tubing, and they each got about 7 runs in.

The aerial park is a spectacular ropes course with three levels, a “mini” zip line and one super tall/long zip line. We paid $50 each for an hour and a half on the course, and you can basically do whatever you want as many times as you want during that time. My 15 yr old was able to complete the full course but my other two (plus myself!) stayed on the first two and just did them over and over. Our facilitator, Aiden, was super helpful and even had to help my 13 yr old over one of the elements to complete the second level.

While we thought both activities were kind of expensive, they were tons of fun and we will do them again when we come back to Red River!

I'm rating this based on my only other ski experience in Ruidoso, NM. This area is very organized, family-oriented and has a lot of opportunities for everyone, participating or not. They have a cafeteria with affordable options. There are plenty of runs to do for all skill levels and learners. We had 4 teens that took the snowboard/ski lessons. The snowboard instructor, Aiden, was outstanding. He took them up on the hill repeatedly so that they would feel comfortable on their own. He instilled confidence in them. The ski lessons were not as great. They did not teach them how to load or unload on the lift. They did not give them guidance on anything other than the learner's hill which you don't have the ability to gather much speed. My daughter left the lessons, fumbled around on the lift and then flew down the hill unable to stop and was done for the week. I know for certain that if she was prepared for the lift experience and for stopping from a higher speed she would have been more confident and successful. Apparently, this was the claim from a few other adults that took the same lesson with her. Overall, we will be back, but I will have to invest a lot more $ into private lessons for her to fix her insecurity from this last experience to boost her confidence and ability back.
The employees were all warm, welcoming and would offer assistance to those that were struggling up on the hill with advice/tips on becoming better.

After retiring at age 62 and becoming a ski instructor for 12 years at a popular ski area in Utah, I have decided that Red River is the best ski area for me. Even during the Christmas Holidays I have never felt "crowded" on the slopes. Two to three minute waits are the longest. Skiers are, for the most part, skiing fast and out of control. People come primarily from Texas and Oklahoma and are very friendly. The whole town has a very laid back and friendly attitude. And the big bonus, I am 79 years old and I SKI Free!

We are not frequent skiers, but we really enjoyed our time at the Red River Ski Area. No lodging in the ski area itself, and so people stay in hotels or rent condos in the town of Red River. (We stayed at the Best Western, which is literally right next door to one of the chair lifts – the Platinum Chair.) The Red Card system is easy to use to prepay for lift tickets, rentals, lessons, and tubing; just make sure you put the Red Card in a zippered pocket in your pants or jacket on your left hand side. Our 10-year old did ski school one day and really loved it; the only downside was that we had to pick her up for lunch at 11:45 and then bring her back at 12:45 to finish the ski lesson (i.e., lunch is not included with the ski school). We ended up going to the nearby grocery store to grab lunch, but it would have been smarter if we had packed a lunch and met her at 11:45 at the ski school so she could have just eaten lunch right at the mountain. There do not seem to be good food options on the mountain, except maybe some packaged snacks and drinks; otherwise, you need to go into the town of Red River to eat (which is very close, but it’s still a bit of a hassle because the parking is so limited at the Ski Area, and so you’ll lose your spot if you leave for lunch). As novice skiers, we enjoyed the large learning hill at first (the Gold chair), and then we enjoyed going up the Platinum Chair to the top and skiing all the green trails on the back of the mountain using the Emerald Chair lift. We rented equipment (in advance), which was very easy to do online, and it was well organized to pick up and drop off at the mountain. It was nice that the equipment could be picked up a day in advance (in the afternoon, after 2pm). The tubing was fun, located right at the main part of the mountain at the bunny slope/magic carpet area. The attendants/employees were generally unhelpful, though, and there were lots of crashes/near injuries during our 1 hour of tubing as a result. You can tell the resort just hires kids to run the tubing, and the resulting service is what you would expect – not very good. 1 hour is plenty of time to tube; and you probably don’t need to do multiple days. We encountered very few lines while we were skiing. We would definitely come back. I’m not sure I would come here if you’ve never ever skied before, because it’s a little rough around the edges, but it worked well for us.

We went up the chair lift and enjoyed the views. It took longer than we thought it would (30 min or so), but it wasn’t a problem.
We hiked some of the trails and ate at the Tip House at the summit.
Large portions and made fresh.
It wasn’t very busy when we went to the top (9:30 am), just the way we like it.
2 family members hiked down and 2 took the chair lift down. It only took the 2 hiking about an hour or so to get down. They enjoyed it and would do it again.

Wesley Wesley Wes! He was amazing and so kind. Because of how amazing he was, next year when we visit - another class will be taken because of him. This was the first time My 10 year old learned to snowboard. He has been skiing for a few years and taken ski lessons at Breckenridge and steamboat. Besides the mix up where the lesson paper had the wrong pick up time, everything else was great. The instructors were waiting by the appropriate flag at or before the time the lesson started. I thought the price was a tad high, esp compared to my sons ski lessons at the other resorts. After my son took lessons with Wesley as the instructor (I didn’t feel like I overpaid for lessons one bit). He was so patient and kind. His positive and gung ho attitude was contagious. I felt safe when I left My son on 1/19/21 with the instructors (which is very important to me). Again, Wesley was the star and we just loved him and I really hope is there next year. I Think he was beyond amazing and such a great instructor that cared for the students and exceeded our expectations 10 fold. The emerald lift operators were so helpful. The boot guys and equipment rental desks were superb and beyond amazing and made us feel as a valued customer. They do not offer half day lift tickets bc of Covid, but hopefully they go back to that option. Parking here is great. I just love this area and we enjoy staying at alpine lodge and the food around here is pretty good.
The team that tended to the roads from eagles bluff to Cimarron were so good, I would say 5 stars would not be enough. I was shocked her clear the road were after a day of snow occurred. The drive from eagles nest to red river had several slick spots where I slid more than I wanted. The city of red river did great on clearing the streets as good as they could.

Our kids learned to ski at Red River. It's an excellent ski area for families, small enough so you can keep track of everyone, but still has some excellent runs for more experienced skiers. The town of Red River has many nice local restaurants with very good food, friendly people, and is very walkable. In the summer there are many varied activities; hiking, jeep riding, guided tours, horseback riding, the chair lift, and many more things to keep everyone entertained. The weather in the summer is beautiful, usually not more than high 70's during the day, and cooling off at night.

Meh. Red River used to be a jewel of Northern New Mexico.; Now it's just a barely-maintained village that would otherwise be a small, dumpy town in West Texas or Oklahoma. The prices are out of range for what you get, the facilities are obviously being held together with duct tape, and when the locals aren't trying to proselytize to you, they're just rude and hungry to see what you have in your wallet. Redneck central.

The summer tubing was very disappointing. All riders were only making it half way down the slope. The had to get off and walk the rest of the way. It’s a rip off. I do not like the feeling of not getting my money’s worth. They didn’t seem to care that all the riders only were making it halfway down the slope. A parent had to go complain to one of the staff and ask if they could wet the slope down. Finally they turned on a sprinkler. It did help.
