After 40 years as an Ojo affectionado, I'm done
Oct 2021
I have been going to Ojo for over 40 years. It gives me no pleasure to write this review, but it has to be said.
On the good side: The new owners are really trying to spruce it up and have used the down time of the pandemic and fire to attend to a lot of the needed renewal. Unfortunately, it is style over substance.
I called ahead this trip to make sure they were open and see if there were guest limits due to covid. The receptionist made no mention of the ongoing construction. Hammering, electrical saws and other construction noise are not relaxing and can be heard throughout the pool areas. And the toxic smell of big truck diesel exhaust was a bit overwhelming at about a half dozen times during our 2 hour visit. This was gently mentioned to the manager on duty and he had no gracious response. Not even an "I'm sorry" just a "Maybe you should wait to come back when the construction is over!" along with several other ungracious comments.
The dressing room was not clean and at noon the stall I was in had run out of toilet paper and the shower had wads of hair in it. An attendant came in while we were dressing and looked around superficially and walked out. All, and I mean ALL, women were given lockers in the small area of the dressing room (11 were trying to get their things in or out of their lockers and change their clothes while we were dressing) and the benches have been reduced in the larger area. When it was suggested to a receptionist who came in to help someone with their locker that perhaps they could spread people out in the dressing room, she said that it was too hard to monitor and lots of people had suggested that.
To top it all off several of the pools were lukewarm and one was just plain cold, as in not heated at all, and it was not a cold plunge. The usual hot one over by the swimming pool was semi-hot. The shower water in the mud bath area was unheated.
And sad to say, Ojo has apparently decided that the local clientele are no longer important. Even with all the construction mess, they have raised their prices and done away with the local's discount and the club card. It now costs $48+ per person, and the service is still along the lines of "We could care less about your experience."
So be forewarned, it is a mess.
I guess it's Jemez for our winter soaks now.

Un-hospitable staff | Constant Fire Alarm in the night
Jul 2020 • Couples
The staff isn't that hospitable and customer service is sub par. We stayed at the Posi Suites and the fire alarm kept going off during the day. It happened on two different occasions during the day and there was no fire. Oh and to top it off the fire alarm also woke us up two separate times in the middle the night. Once around 1am and I think the other occasion was around 2am. Good luck calling the front desk to report the issue or get information. They don't answer their phones. When we told the staff about the issue upon check out they seemed like they didn't really care and just said it was a glitch. Terrible vacation. We flew in from California to visit this place. I wouldn't not recommend this place.

Relaxing New Mexico Weekend
Jun 2020 • Couples
This was a perfect post quarantine getaway! The grounds are beautiful, peaceful and calming. The mineral springs are the best medicine for a stress of the world today.
As a health care provider, I was impressed with the protocols that resort has in place post quarantine. I was extremely comfortable staying here.
The staff, in its entirety, was friendly, helpful, professional and accommodating.
Our cottage was clean and quite comfortable. A cozy place to rest after traveling through New Mexico.
We'll be back!

Fantastic Visit
Jun 2020 • Friends
This was my second time at Ojo, but first visit post-plague. It was an amazing experience because day passes are not currently issued (not sure when they are returning) so guests staying in lodging have the place to themselves and it is GLORIOUS. I was amazed at the continued excellent service in the midst of a pandemic. We stayed in a Cliffside Suite; for me, having the private mineral pool was worth every extra penny. I particularly like how this resort has just about everything you’d need in the suites, including plates, silverware, etc.

Folks, if you’re going anywhere in the middle of a pandemic and expect perfection, please consider staying home. Have some grace for these wonderful people who are risking their health so we can enjoy nice dips in mineral pools.

TL/DR: this place looks cool, but that’s it. Staff is awful and for the price it’s totally not worth it.

This was a great experience If you take away nearly every staff interaction, price, food & drinks.

The check in staff are quite possibly the rudest customer service team I have ever dealt with. Just rude and snarky from the get-go. From the moment we walked into the office they were incredibly off-putting.

Seriously, it was like it was their job to be rude, and if it was, like as some kind of performance art piece, they nailed it.

*side note, part of the waiver you sign is a release of liability for TORTURE, not marking that up. Read it if you go.

Anyhow, we booked 3 nights in the big suite with a private pool and that was VERY nice. For $1500+ for 3 nights stay you would think it would be a luxury or even 4 star resort, it’s certainly priced as such. Nope.

The food was alright, but just alright, and the service in the restaurant and “bar” was also rude and curt. At one point we thought we might be on a hidden camera show to see how we would react to the service.

The bar is beer and wine only. Fine, fine, fine... but the bar tenders were rude too! It was insane!

Nearly every interaction we had with the staff was hysterically rude. It got to the point where rather than having to deal with the folks working at the place we drove to the gas station down the highway to buy groceries and wine so we didn’t have to interact with the seriously, incredibly, almost-to-the-point-of-ridiculousness rude staff.

The upside was that the suit was nice. Not $500 a night nice, but nice. Cool fireplace.

We stayed at Ojo Caliente because it looked cool on the website and friends of ours had been there the month before. When we got home and talked to them... they had the exact same experience! They thought it was just an off day for the staff, but noted that they were also treated with rudeness and very curtly right off the bat.
Unless every day is an off day, it’s just the staff.

Definitely wouldn’t recommend. Save yourself the hassle and go to ten thousand waves instead.

March Trip 2020
Mar 2020 • Family
Our experience in the pools was healing physically and spiritually. It was so serene at night soaking and grazing up at the stars. We slept like babies that night. We enjoyed our stay in the hotel. It had a charming old west feel. We had to use the shared bathhouse since our room did not have a shower but that was fine. The showers were clean private. Be sure to hike up the hill behind the property and enjoy the views. We also enjoyed shopping with the amazingly talented and friendly jewelry artists on Saturday. I will carry with me fond memories made here. Thank you Ojo Calinente

Excellent for R & R. Rooms were very nice with outdoor patio and kiva fireplace. The pools are very relaxing and sitting in the NM sun was energizing. Food was OK. Sit in the hot mineral pools for 20 minutes - refresh in the mineral swimming pool - get some sun and do it again. Slept like a baby.

First visit to a commercial hot springs
Feb 2020
We enjoyed our visit tremendously. Cannot remember the last time we felt so relaxed. The variety of pools was very enjoyable.
We arrived on Wednesday afternoon with reservations for the night. (Separate review). A night's reservation comes with access to the pools for both the day before and after.
We took a hike to the pueblo ruins before soaking. This was a very scenic hike, but there is a self-guided tour of the ruins, and we were not offered the guidebook, even though I mentioned we were planning to hike up there. Our only complaint. Trail is not as well marked as trails we are used to on the East Coast, but still pretty easy to follow.

After the hike we soaked for about an hour and one-half, which is about enough for us. We then each got a massage about the best either of us has had. A glass of wine at the wine bar completed the perfect romantic atmosphere.

We tried to hike the river trail the next morning, but it was pretty overgrown. Another hour and one-half in the pools the next day was as enjoyable as the previous day.

Beware of thieves
Jan 2020 • Couples
My wife and I visit here often. Once my wife went to the restroom and some stole her sunglasses. More recently, my Keen sandals were stolen while I was in the shower. Lost and found are totally unreliable. They do not return calls.
The springs themselves are decent.

Ojo Caliente in Winter
Jan 2020 • Couples
Ok. I finally visited Ojo in the Winter. It was a very nice winter day in the mid-40’s and sunny which made our visit very pleasant. Most everyone was just using the normal flip flops and robe to walk around. No special winter gear was needed, however we were prepared for colder weather with warm outdoor slippers, etc. We wore our clothes (base layers/tech pants and jackets) to the locker rooms with our suits under. It was easy to undress/dress to go back and forth to our room. Our visit was very nice as usual, but one word of caution - they take the “whisper zone” policy very seriously. We have always been observant, but happened to be sharing the iron pool with a group of 3 older ladies who were having a conversation that was pretty loud by any standard. The guy with the “whisper zone” sign with the chimes walked by several times and the ladies would initially quiet down, but shortly thereafter increased their volume again. A manager shortly appeared and asked the ladies to quiet down, and when one of the ladies giggled, he aggressively replied “do you think something is funny!?!” Apparently, they take the whisper policy very seriously, as everyone appreciates, so if you are asked to whisper, you should to avoid a nasty confrontation. While I appreciate the policy, the situation could have and should have been handled with more tact by management.
