I was road tripping through New Mexico and stopped in the tiny, charming little town of Mesilla. I needed to stretch my legs so I spent about an hour walking around the main square, and I thought it would be cool to check out some local food and wine to take home with me as a souvenir. I love wine and nuts, so going into Heart of the Desert Pistachios & Wines was a no-brainer.

This homey little shop has lots of local New Mexican delights. I purchased a local Syrah ($14.99), Hatch Chile Infused Olive Oil ($12), and a half pound of Garlic & Onion Pistachios ($7.50). I love buying souvenirs that I can eat, and it was fun to get these home and sample them while remembering my trip through New Mexico. I was shocked, but the wine wasn't half bad! Of course the nuts and olive oil were culinary hits.

Check this small shop out if you're in Mesilla. It feels good to support such a down-home, local business.

We made two visits while we were in Alamagordo. The first day was to sample the Pistachios and Wine (good service and free samples). We would have stayed longer to have a glass of wine on their patio, but it was too windy/cool. Since the patio and view were so nice, we decided to come back the next day. They do have some boxed crackers, cheese, and beef stick that you can purchase, but you're also welcome to bring your own snacks. It's worth checking out.

Very friendly staff, nice outdoor patio, & a free tour! My favorite was the chocolate gelato. Very family-friendly, but the tour would be a bit long for little ones. Awesome free samples & great gift shop! Our tour guide, Kendra, was great! HUGE selection of pistachios. Mom & Dad bought some pistachio wine, recommended by some other friends who got some also. Mostly wheelchair accessible, although there are small sections of gravel and small doors. Awesome stop!!!

This was the easiest heart of the desert we have been to. They were very helpful. They were nice enough to hold our bags while we shop, since this was our first stop at the square.

We went here after visiting Pistachioland, because they had a wine we wanted.

Pistachio and wine samples were generous. We bought some of each and ate our ice cream on the patio. All quite nice. Pistachioland was boisterous, this was more laid back. Hence, the title.

It was just too difficult to decide on one kind of pistachios! After wandering and enjoying the gift shop I settled on the traditional salted/roasted and the garlic and onion pistachios. In hindsight I wish I had gotten one of each kind! The good news is that I grabbed one of the catalogs so I can order and have them shipped. The catalog has a lot of nice selections of gift selections and suggestions. I will be ordering baskets as gifts to our friend and family that we stayed with as we travelled the country.

This review is for the shop on the Mesilla plaza. Note that the excellent tours of the pistachio groves & nut-handling facilities are outside of Alamogordo. The Eagle Ranch (Heart of the Desert) pistachios are of higher quality than any others I've tried in the U.S. I've learned to buy unsalted in-the-shell as the salted ones are way too salty for me. I went into this shop to buy pistachios, as I'm not into wine. I was surprised on entry to find myself in what looked like a twofer shop of wine and Christian curios. Some of the wooden crosses looked very nice, so if you're into that stuff this is a good place to shop. I almost left, though, as I thought I was in the wrong shop. Fortunately the employee greeted me, so I replied that I was looking for pistachios. They are in a side-room. They were out of the larger-quantity bags I was looking for, but gave me the same price for smaller bags. Why 4-stars instead of 5? I thought it unfair to give 3 stars because the pistachios are so good, but I found the whole Christian theme off-putting.

We went here with our two children (ages 11&7). The kids enjoyed looking at the different items. The sales associate was very nice and professional. We were able to try lots of different samples. Neat store.

Our whole family are Pistachio lovers so a visit to the Heart of the Desert Pistachios was a Must Do. To begin with, they have a wonderful gift shop with everything Pistachio and more. You can try multiple samples of many of their flavors. We signed up for their factory tour...another MUST DO. Their entire process is done on site from the tree to the packaging. The walking tour took about an hour and it was narrated by a most passionate employee. After our tour, we went back into the gift shop and bought a bottle of their wine and enjoyed sitting on their covered patio that overlooks their orchard of pistachio trees. We had earlier visited the White Sands Dunes and loved it so it was interesting that on our tour of the Heart of the Desert, down one of the roads that goes through the orchard for harvesting and maintenance you could see the back side of the White Sands Dunes.
