We just spent a couple very pleasant hours at Leuta, meeting Jennifer, Denis and Mirka. The experience exceeded our expectations at every level: the wines are absolutely amazing, and we enjoyed so much our conversations about the philosophy of their making. Sipping Leuta's wonderful products with delightful and informed company, while sitting in a beautiful country setting, made it a day to remember. In appreciation......

Four adult siblings, some with their partners, spent a glorious week together in a villa near Cortona. One of the highlights of our trip was the morning we spent with Denis at the Azienda Agricola Leuta. Our tour guide Debora, a native of Arezzo married to an American expat, is well-versed on the area's history and wine-making culture, and she promised us we would enjoy meeting Denis. She was right!! Denis' personal story was fascinating, from being raised in northern Italy in a vineyard setting with a grandfather who instilled in him a respect and love for the grape, to an international education and success in business and finance, to his return to his first passion of wine-making. And the wines were so superb, several of us signed up for the Wine Club. Our first shipment arrived this week, and we're enjoying them almost as much as we did in Leuta's tasting room. I wholeheartedly recommend the Leuta experience to anyone visiting Italy and like wine, conversation, and interesting people. Enjoy!!

We made the trip to Leuta, as we thought they made a special aged balsamic vinegar we were looking for- what we discovered was something more intriguing.

Denis ( pronounced Dennis ) starting his wine making career at the tender age of 14- he just didn’t realize it would become his life passion.

In a region where wineries can produce upwards of 2 million bottles a year, precision, peculiarity and passion are the hallmarks of Leuta winery. Dennis boutique winery produces 35,000 bottles per year. His wines are exclusive to the region as well as his unique no irrigation technique. This dedication results in a product not achievable on a large scale vineyard.

His wines possess a complexity that resonates with his personality and attention to detail. From the special aged barrels from France, the construction of the barrel, the hand picking precision, all combines to create in this case a 100% Merlot that is rich with hints of blackberry and I think chocolate! It is so elegant.

He also creates a blend called Tao which has a triad of wines with fluid combinations of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc which results in a blend that with have your friends being delighted with your selection - if you choose to share! His Chardonnay coats the palate in a exquisite way and compliments taste buds in a way not found in the domestic wine.

With a crew of five, you see the passion in every process from the picking to how he matures his wines to his tastings. You will not find his wines in stores. In order to obtain them you must visit Italy or become a wine club member ( highly recommend- we did).

He also makes exclusive wines for his members as if you needed another reason to join. His passion and love of wine produces a superior wine well worth the trip and investment.

When in Tuscany, visit Leuta, say hello to Denis and taste heaven in a bottle.

Winery Leuta on the outside may appear to be a charming boutique winery. However, it falls far short of delivering a good experience or a quality product. The owner prefers to spend large amounts of time expounding on questionable mathematics and his life's story than stick to the wine. He even went so far as to give us the wrong wine when it came time to purchase, giving us his cheap blend instead of the reserve Merlot we had asked for. We found much better wineries with a much better product at a much better price not too far away.

Dear Natalie, I am sorry to hear that the experience you had in my Winery turned out to be disappointing. I would like to have the chance to do it better next time and of course next time you will be in this area you will be my guest. Regarding the fact that I gave you a wrong bottle I feel sorry for the mistake I made and it will be my pleasure to send you the right bottle as late as today. I hope to hear form you soon Regards Denis

My husband and I visited Leuta today with another couple we are traveling with. Our inquiry prior to departing from U.S. worked flawlessly with Jennifer (via Facebook and email) followed by confirming from a few choices 3 to 4 days before our visit. Owner Denis spent 2.5 hours explaining his philosophy (wine and life) and we all were in awe and respect. The honor he gives to the grapes and soil and process reaps great rewards in the wines - such depth of flavor. We all agreed this was the highlight of our trip thus far. Till we meet again-Kudos, Grazie, Thank You, Namaste.

If you visit one winery in the region, be sure it is this one. Jennifer was an excellent hostess, an American ex-pat with an interesting story and a lot of knowledge about the winery and the area. She accommodated our family of five for a tour and tasting on short notice, and we could not have been happier with the wine or the experience. We enjoyed the wine so much that we signed up for their wine club on the spot. Jennifer also kindly gave us recommendations for are restaurants in Cortona and Montepulciano.

We booked the tour at the last minute based on the great reviews on TripAdvisor, and we were not disappointed! The owner Denis picked us up from the train station near Cortona and drove us out to the winery himself.

The tour involved him showing us the production facility and explaining how the wines are made. Then he gave us a very informative wine tasting and answered our (numerous) questions. Denis made us feel at home in his facility and was very friendly and easy to talk to.

The only thing I would caution for some is that this is a "no frills" tour in a small winery. The tour is given by the owner, who may from time to time be pulled in to briefly manage aspects of the business throughout the tour. The focus of this place is on making wine, not giving fancy tours. This kind of authentic experience was exactly what we wanted, so no complaints here, but it may not be what everyone expects.

All in all, we highly recommend this tour and the wines!

Found Leuta through TripAdvisor and decided to drive by and check it out. We could not have been more happy with that spontaneous decision. We wanted the small winery, one on one personal experience while enjoying great wine. Leuta was all that and more. Enzo (one of the two owners) left his work to come give us a behind the scenes tour and then we sat down and tasted every wine that Leuta currently makes (thank you Enzo!). What an experience! We loved it so much that the next day we went back so we could meet Denis (the other owner) and learn a bit more (and thank you Denis!). Wait until you hear the Vin Santo story first hand, and taste the 10 year barrel aged Vin Santo wine!! Leuta will be a big name someday and these kinds of personal experiences won't be possible then. We are so happy we found it now! Oh...and shipped some wine home too!

Denis was so gracious and provided us with a memorable experience that we have shared with all our friends and colleagues. We arrived without any advanced notice and Denis welcome us to sit outside and try some of his wonderful wines. Time flew by and we learned so much about Denis’ passion and his early days that he spent learning about wine from his grandfather. What a wonderful story, finally able to return to his true passion and love in life. Thanks so much Denis for making us feel so welcomed and sharing a little bit of our Tuscany experience with you.
