Visited Philmont twice as an adult leader in a BSA troop. One trip was the traditional backpacking trek and the second was a horseback Cavalcade trek. Both were awesome experiences at a stunningly beautiful corner of New Mexico. The staff and program there is so...More

Simply stopping here was a treat. What Boy Scout did not want to go to Philmont. Simply driving by the ranch and seeing what I missed out on was sad yet wonderful. Great to see what the Scouts experience.

Several museums that tell the story of the Santa Fe trail. A training center that rivals big resorts and conference centers. Plus, a ranch that has camped over a million young men and women since it opened. Adult men all over America ask each other...More

The Philmont Scout Ranch is an excellent stop on the Sante Fe trail for the entire family. The Philmont museum and Villa Philmonte tour of the home of Waite Phillips really is a history lesson of the entire area. Beautiful landscapes and a great stop...More

They do it all, except the actual Hike. They give you the itinerary, packing list (which you should stick to, no more no less) and set you up for the trek. You start at base camp, acclimate to the altitude, then off to the trails....More

It's worth joining Boy Scouts to come to this outdoor adventure camp. 14 years and older can spend days in the back country hiking and engaging in great activities at staffed camps. Boys become men here. Women test their mettle. Lifelong friendships are forged.

I hiked Philmont as a boy, but decided to take my family before they were old enough to go on a trek. We enjoyed walking through the trading post, Philmont Museum, and an amazing free tour of the Villa Philmonte. The BSA is an amazing...More

I have hiked Philmont many years ago as a scout. It is a beautiful place, organized and well maintained. My wife and I stopped by to visit our son who is working here this year. We loved the short stay.

I don't think it's an issue since you aren't hiking. The good part is that there won't be many people there. The museum can get crowded. Plus, it would be neat to see the mountains with a fair amount of snow on them still.

Basically the higher up you are, the better the phone service. I have Verizon, which was slow at base camp, but received service on Baldy Mtn., in Elkhorn and Santa Clause camps.

I feel the experience of 7 days is almost the same as 12 days. i feel it's the rush that one feels in being at Philmont that makes the experience.
