- Sarah M1 contributionThis has to be one of the most AWEsome train rides ever in the world! The views are spectacular, some of which can only be seen via the train. I usually spend most of my time in the open gondola where the best pictures can be taken of the steam locomotive(s) when going around curves (like Tanglefoot) and there's a better chance of seeing some wonderful wildlife - elk, deer, bears, marmots, and much more. If you are an avid ferroequinologist (railfan) and you're lucky, you might even get to experience a double or even triple header (if you ride from Chama)! All of the employees and docents are so nice and knowledgeable and accommodating and want to show off this fabulous excursion. I've been riding almost every year since opened as a scenic route and I always see and/or learn something new. I know it's expensive (unfortunately, it costs a lot to run), but they offer several discounts and is a once in a lifetime experience that you will remember the rest of your life, especially if you or you have children who like trains! I highly recommend bringing a jacket and some kind of eyewear (glasses, sunglasses, maybe goggles for young kiddos) to make sure you don't get a cinder in your eye, which is not fun, but doesn't happen very often really. All in all, I don't think you will be disappointed taking this journey!Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten June 28, 2024
- Bruin14Albuquerque, New Mexico158 contributionsThe “Galloping Goose” runs every fall on the Cumbres & Toltec. Great experience. Rode from Antonito to Chama. We left prior to the daily train after riding the bus from Chama. Made 7-8 stops to get off, take pictures & have the Goose do a run by. Including walking through the longest tunnel on the line. Crew is all volunteers (they pay to be there). Included lunch at Osier, we got there ahead of both trains. We had 14 passengers on this trip & the crew made sure everyone who wanted to ride in front got the opportunity to. We had a great day weather wise with a nearly cloudless sky, warm & the aspens were gold and red. Trip was about 7 hours at most less than 20mph including 1/2 hour for lunch. Definitely worth it.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2024
- ncccyndi1Malvern, Ohio155 contributionsThis is train number two in three days that we rode. This train is a true steam train with actual coal that heats the water that runs the train. Runs on narrow gauge tracks and is the longest and highest to do so. This train goes 64 miles from Chama NM to Antonito CO. You can choose which way you ride the train either from Antonito to Chama or Chama to Antonito. We did the Chama to Antonito then bus back to Chama to car. Both towns are very small towns and sometimes no restaurants open so plan accordingly. This train gives you a map to follow along and volunteers (which are fantastic) tell you where you are and such. You have a big buffet lunch at Osier, CO for about an hour where you can walk around to see the historic town. This train goes up in the mountains with lots of trestles and tunnels. We rode the coach car but could go anywhere except private cars. Nice seats with big windows that you could open. Very scenic and historical ride even has cows to keep it interesting. Saw some elks as well. Also very long ride so if that isn’t your cup of tea might choose a nice train car that you can sit at a table and eat snacks along the way or choose another short train ride instead.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024
- Cynthia AColumbia, Missouri539 contributionsBoarded train at 10:00 a.m. in Chama, NM and disembarked about 5:00 in Antonito CO. Lunch was at the Osler Station about midway on journey which made a nice break. Day was beautiful, scenery varied. Dry and arid to area like the Toltec Gorge at 10,015 feet above sea level. Comfortable seats. Cross NM and CO borders 11 times during the day. Suggest wearing dark clothing. Even though it is a steam engine we had soot on us at end of day. You could not see it on dark clothing but felt it.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 11, 2024
- hochmohr370 contributionsWe went from Chama to Antonito by train and back by bus. I would recommend this direction, as the particularly impressive landscape is then more likely to be in the morning light at the beginning. Interesting especially the ride on the open car (Gondola Car), which can be visited at any time. There a guide who explains various things about the railway and the landscape. The food in the Ossier intermediate station is rich and good - and completely included in the fare. We took the simplest category "Coach Car" and found the seats sufficiently comfortable - a lot of the time we spent anyway in the Gondola Car. Definitely have headgear and sunscreen ready for this!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 1, 2024
- Robert CNew Mexico1 contributionThis was our second trip on the railroad. We took the Antinito to the turn around and back this time in the parlor car. Last summer we did the trip from the Chama side. It was opening day and was still cold on top of the mountain with a little snow. The buffet lunch was plentiful and a good selection. The coffee machine was not working at the buffet. When we got back on the train we were able to get a hot coffee from the hostess. The views were great, and the staff were great and informative. The sights and experience on the railroad will be different from most tourist type activites. The trip is well worth taking, if you can afford the parlor car I would recommend it. Overall a good experience and a look into the past as well.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 9, 2024
- enteJ80 contributionsWe did the Geology train in September. Enjoyed learning more about the area. This train ride is the most beautiful of any we have been on in Colorado. The cars are reproduction with big windows. Viewing is easy, and there is always the gondola car for outdoor viewing. Our choice of seats is the middle price, but the lowest price seat works out fine if you are willing to spend time standing in the gondola or are both slender. The food and drinks on the train are good and prices fair. Lunch at Osier Station is very good with healthy choices. You can take a small cooler along.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024
- William BAlbuquerque, New Mexico3 contributionsThis is an amazing train ride. We hadn't done in a while and decided it was time overdue. We splurged a bit and did the parlor car which gave snacks and beverages....drinks were available for a reasonable cost The buffet had an excellent choice and variety. Thoroughly enjoyed our day and highly recommend it for an outing.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 14, 2024

- Travel62955024535Albuquerque, New Mexico19 contributionsThe views were amazing and breathtaking as the train was perfect to ride early in June as we had the entire Conejos train car to our family! It’s so fun to hang your head out the windows or stand on the platforms between the train cars. Additionally the lunch buffet at Oshier Station was so delicious and very filling with many selections for everyone and scrumptious desserts!! Furthermore all the CTSRR staff and docents were amazing and very knowledgeable about anything about the train or the scenery! This is a must ride for anyone’s bucket list! It was so relaxing and refreshing to have a day disconnected from our phones (except to take many of course).Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 6, 2024

We went on a weekday in the second week of October and the fall foliage was fabulous. We took the full day train ride starting in Chama and going to Antonito, with the return by bus. Our train had some mechanical problems and so we arrived in Antonito about an hour late and therefore back in Chama an hour late. It was getting dark by the time we got back and our food options in Chama were limited. The train stopped for lunch in Osier, where there is a big building and people taking the train in both directions stop for a buffet-style hot lunch, included in the price of the ticket. Lunch was fine and plentiful, all we cared to eat. We paid for the "cheap seats," not the luxury cars, but the weather was beautiful and we spent quite a bit of time in the open air car. We probably wouldn't go again, but I am really glad we went once.

Absolutely wonderful! Booked the parlor car ( worth the extra $—- treated royally—-seating incredibly comfy, great variety of unlimited beverages, wonderful, attentive service, great views, informative narrative). So interesting particularly if you enjoy steam locomotives. Included lunch had a varied menu —— free unlimited buffet. Scenery was nothing less than breath taking. Do this! You will not regret it. But book early especially if you want the parlor seating—- there are only twenty seats. We booked in January for October.

A really fun experience. You go through beautiful country. We paid extra to stay in the deluxe car which was much nicer than the regular cars, mostly because it is further away from the engine and all the soot and smoke. Although we ended up standing in the open air car most of the trip since the weather was beautiful and there was so much to see. Get seats on the left side of the train if you are going from Antonito to Chama!

We made reservations for the deluxe car, which has tables, complimentary beverages and an attendant that gives hints on what to look for as you travel and provides drinks continuously. She was very knowledgeable about the sights and very friendly. There is also a private toilet on the car. The extra cost for the deluxe car was well worth it. We were given souvenir travel mugs with the CumbresToltec logo on it. We took the train to Antonito and stopped for lunch in Osier, which was buffet style and the food was great. They got over 200 people through the serving line quickly. We then got back on the train to continue to Antonito We took a bus ride back to Chama. The changing colors of the trees was spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing travel and atmosphere. There was a open air car that you could go to to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. They had a chair lift to accommodate handicap people, which you needed to note when making your reservations and again when you picked up your ticket. I cannot say enough about how helpful the docents and staff were, Steve accompanied me to our car after getting up on the lift and again when we stopped for lunch. There was quite a walk to get in front of the train and cross over to the restaurant. He also stayed with me when my husband went to get my lunch. He came back to get me to reboard the train so I could get a head start . He came back to get me to get off the train and get to the bus. He couldn’t have been nicer and really made my trip better. The bus also had a lift and the bus driver and attendant assisted me with getting onto the lift. We are so glad that we were able to get a reservation during the fall with the changing colors the trees. They stop running the end of October and start back in June. I highly recommend this attraction.

Things you can expect on a trip with the C&TS RR:
Beautiful Mountain Scenery, as well as significant areas of flat dry sagebrush.
You can expect the train to travel slow. It was not ever designed to travel fast.
The steam locomotives are built in 1925, or older. The RR coaches are around the same vintage. Though they receive maintenance, they break down, a lot. Your trip may be significantly delayed.
Do not expect mercy or refunds. They clutch any money they get their hands on.
Do not expect to be pampered, the staff tolerates tourists, and tolerates is generous. You are a dime a dozen to most of them. There is little fear of losing customers, they receive funding from the states so poor management and staff are subsidized by your tax dollars.
Do not expect the bookend towns of Chama or Antonito to be hospitable, or even open for business.
Expect to hear how "Authentic" the railroad and property are. If that is your thing, you will be impressed. Authenticity and Comfort do not go hand in hand. More comfort equals less authenticity, it also equals more cost for you.
Expect dynamic weather possibilities. It is rare that there is not an early to mid afternoon rain shower. With elevations that vary between 7500 ft. to 10,000 ft, rain and clouds cool things down quickly. Coaches are not heated, and are not exactly air-tight.
As a rail-fan, I have been on this ride many times. As a Husband and father, I know what my family of low interest rail fans want. If they are going to be on a ride that takes all day and deposits you mid-day, and again and the end of the day. Preferences are to go to Durango and Silverton. Less "authentic", but definitely more comfortable for the person who is less concerned with authenticity, and more concerned with enjoying travels, hotels, and meals.

My wife and I rode this train on Friday, October 7, 2022. We left Chama, New Mexico at 10:00 AM. For each ticket we paid $155 for a trip to Antonito, Colorado, with a lunch stop in Osier, Colorado, included. The train would leave Osier at 1:45 PM and we would ride a bus back to Chama from Antonito that departed at 4:45 PM. So total time on the train was about 6.5 hours minus an hour and forty-five minutes for lunch.
Let me say that the first week of October is by far the prime time to ride this train to see the fall colors. The yellows and reds were stunning. See my attached photos. We had ridden the Durango-Silverton train before and this one beat it by leaps and bounds for scenic beauty. The train winds through tunnels, over trestles, through canyons, and gains altitude slowly by winding through mountain passes. If you are outside, you will have coal fragments belched on you, but that's part of the fun. There was an uncovered car towards the back of the train to stand on to take photographs, but there were plenty of opportunities to stand on the platform between train cars and take them as well.
I took plenty of photos of aspens and the landscapes surrounding our moving train. A good DSLR camera was a must to stop the action. Our train stopped at noon in Osier. This consisted of a few scattered buildings and a giant mess hall where we ate lunch. A cafeteria lunch awaited us with water, iced tea, and lemonade to drink. A salad, pinto beans, corn were the sides with pulled pork, chicken and blue corn vegetarian enchiladas as the main dishes. For dessert, apple cobbler. Lunch tasted average, nothing special stood out, but it was filling.
Some history: the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad started as a section of the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad in 1880. In 1970 it became the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad when the States of Colorado and New Mexico bought the section of track and equipment. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has been in continuous service ever since.
If you want to ride the train, book in advance on their website. Excursions run from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. I would definitely recommend booking the first week in October for those gorgeous, prime fall colors.

My husband and I chose the Parlor Car for our train ride. We went from Chama all the way to Antonito. The parlor car is the last car on the train, it is private and has its own restroom. There's also a small platform at the very back of the car, which is the very back of the train, that you can step out onto for pictures or to watch the little speed car following. The speed car looks for any sparks the train might have started and puts them out. During the trip we were served a pastry with fruit along with coffee or juice for breakfast. In the later part of the afternoon we were offered a small snack bag of trail mix. There is also a bar for adult beverages, as well as, complimentary juice, water, coffee is available all day.
The scenery was absolutely stunning!! The colors of the Aspen trees were bright yellow to gold to some turning orange. We were so lucky to have a sunny, clear blue sky day, which made the changing colors breath taking. The Parlor Car experience was another good choice for us. No matter which car you ride in, we recommend sitting on the right side of the train, this is the side that gives the best views of most of the particular sites that are pointed out during the trip.
Our morning portion of the trip, Verna was our parlor car attendant. She was very attentive, knowledgeable and provided great commentary. Kudos to Verna!
Half way point was buffet lunch at Osier. Some earlier reviews indicated lunch here was less then satisfying due to the facility having had a fire and was only able to offer limited lunch. The facility now is rebuilt and our experience was a full buffet with several hot food choices, along with drinks and dessert.
After lunch our train trip continued and so did the beautiful scenery. Upon reaching Antonito we then climbed aboard a very nice, clean, comfortable bus for about an hours ride back to Chama.

I guess anybody that reads these reviews will already know what a great piece of American railroad heritage this represents. We took the train from Chama all the way through to Antonito stopping at Osier for lunch, and then the bus back to Chama. We chose the Deluxe car which was extremely comfortable and enjoyed chair side service of drinks and snacks along with a commentary from our hostess. The scenery and the feats of engineering that created it are breathtaking. This and the Durango and Silverton Railroad are bucket list items for anybody even if you're not a railroad fanatic (as I am regrettably for my wife). The shame for me (as a European by birth) is that most of America seems totally indifferent to preserving what little heritage it has.

We took the bus from Chama to Antonito and rode the train from Antonito to Chama. Beautiful scenery from all sides on this train experience. The railroad staff are superb and make you feel very comfortable. You are allowed to move around almost anywhere on the train after tickets are checked just after departure. The gondola car is so much fun and allows photos from 360 degrees. Docents onboard provide commentary, but not constantly. They also do a great job with questions and really like their work. Prices in the concessions car are very reasonable. The lunch at the midway point is far better that I would have expected. We had a served-buffet lunch of enchiladas, meatloaf (good!) and pulled pork bbq, accompanied by a nice salad bar with extensive fixings. Desserts were delicious (peach-blackberry cobbler, tres- leches, chocolate cake, etc. All were excellent. A nice touch is that every employee we came in contact with seems to really like their job and are enthusiastically welcoming. This is a real winner if you are in northern New Mexico or southern CO.

My wife and I rode in the parlor car from Chama to Antonito and returned on the bus. This is an incredible trip like no other. The train is steam powered, the scenery is spectacular, and the ride is as historically authentic as it gets. The trip gives a real feel for the former Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge empire, and the ride from Chama up to Windy Point at 10,000 feet is fantastic as the steam locomotive pulls up the grade. The trip also gives a great appreciation for the skills of 1880 engineers who built the line.

I’ll be taking the train from Chama in mid October with my husband. I’ve loved reading all the reviews on here and they all are adding to the excitement. We have parlor seats and are boarding in Chama (taking the full day ride and the bus back). The only seats left together (on the only day we can ride it) were 9 and 10. I believe this is on the left side and I think this is unfortunately on the “wrong” side going north.
I’m surprising my husband with this and am worried this will take away from the amazing experience of what this ride could be. I imagine he’ll want to be outside for much of the ride but it may also be cold at times or we’ll want to just sit for periodically.
I’m wondering if anyone can say anything good about sitting on the “wrong” side. I’ve only read generally negative remarks about not being on the more scenic side. I think I just need to put my mind at ease. I’m imagining us turned toward the other side’s windows, peaking over other peoples’ shoulders. Haha!

One person mentioned getting seats in parlor car on right going to Antonio...then on left going back. Can you actually do that ?? Aren't there assigned seats and you have to stay put?
Wouldn't want to get in a fight over seats. Lol!!
Please explain. Thanks so much!

We just rode from Chama and back - assigned the same seats for the day, no switching. I don't see why you'd do that though - staying in the same seat allows you to see the opposite side's landscape on the way back. Also, there is ample opportunity to move around the cars and change your view to see all you want.

Are there packages to go on the train one way, spend the night at the destination town, and return on the train the next day?
Written August 17, 2019
Personally, having stayed in Chama the night before our train ride, I would recommend driving the extra distance and choose from one of the hotels in Pagosa Springs. There are hotels in Chama; however there are only 6 places to choose from, the hotels are outdated and there are no national brand hotels located in Chama. I was disappointed and extremely uncomfortable where we stayed in Chama.
