James is, by far, the best guide I’ve ever fished with! He is very knowledgeable, patient, and one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. To top that all off he’s just fun to be around. My wife caught her biggest fish ever on our trip and she had a blast. I’ve been fly fishing for over 20 years and James still showed me things that were new and helpful and made it fun and interesting. James was able to meet my wife, who is newer to fishing, and I where we are at in our levels of experience and teach us both! Can’t say enough great things about our experience and this man. You will not regret booking James. We will definitely be back.

James, the owner of About Trout, is freakin' amazing! If you've ever been on a guided fly fishing trip, you know that the point should be to learn so you can go out on your own and catch fish. Yeah, hopefully you catch some fish too. James was great at both! I learned so much and I'm now 100% committed to Euro Nymphing. If you haven't tried it you need to and you need to do so from someone who actually knows what they're doing. James was super professional, laid back in a good way (yeah, some guides are lazy, that's not James at all), and my brother and I had two awesome days back to back. I'm already looking forward to the next time we get to get out on the water together. I've been fishing my entire life, I've been with a lot of guides (yeah, I get around . . .), and I can honestly say that James is one of the best out there.

James knows the northern New Mexico waters and Conejos river better than anyone or any fly shop. You might as well call him a trout whisperer. If you want to polish your skills, learn nymphing or dry fly techniques, or are just a beginner wanting to fly fish, he will make your trip memorable. Very nice guy who loves to have fun. Highly recommended!

James is an excellent guide and is an awesome teacher and generally awesome person. If you want to have a great experience and also catch fish James can do that for you. I took my dad on a float trip on the San Juan and James did not dissapoint. We had a great time with him and we both highly reccomend him. If you live in New Mexico and want to fish with a guide hire James from About Trout! Check out his youtube and you will see hes a highly trained and deadly fisherman. He has a license to kill it on the river.

Had a great day on the San Juan with James, it didn’t matter if we caught fish or not (we did in crooked numbers. ). The education you get from James Is hard to measure as he is patient to any skill level and is respectful to all others on the river. Our full day on the float went to fast and the first cast was as exciting as the last.
