James gets my highest grades for service, knowledge of the water and the local area, and ability to teach without preaching. In the past I’ve had drill sergeant guides, guides who are grumpy or just not into it from the start and it really is a bummer... James is not one of those guides. I enjoyed that he asked “Do you want a tip?” or “Would you like me to show you how to to improve your cast for an area like this?”... Yes I would! (and that works great for me). James enjoys what he does and that makes a huge difference when you are spending significant time with a guide. James is very good at what he does, has an excellent manner to his guiding style, happily puts in the real effort and makes it fun. He also got us into fish all day, which is great too, but since I know that no guide can control whether the fish are eating or not, all of his other traits as a guide really matter more ultimately than how many fish we netted. I’ll hire James again, and if you haven’t you should.

The first time I reached out to James I knew I was building a Great friendship with an honest guy that was positive and well experienced.
I booked a trip for the wife and myself for our 18 yr. anniversary to float the San Juan and within the first few minutes on the water we were hooked up on quality Browns & Rainbows and it continued throughout the day with the largest rainbow coming in at 23" and around the 8lb mark. James was very accommodating to whatever we needed throughout the day especially for my wife being the second time to ever fly fish.
All in All if you want to experience the San Juan reach out to James and just sit back and relax, he will do the rest.

This was my first time fishing with a guide, and I couldn’t have picked a better one. Fished the Brazos River (New Mexico) with James at About Trout.
James was an awesome guide, very professional, willing to help me with any questions, and took the time to teach me right the first time. In just a half day on the water
I reeled in 20+ fish. Not only was James helpful, but he was fun to fish with, and had a great attitude.
I would recommend James for anglers of any skill level. Can’t go wrong with About Trout.

James came highly recommended to us by a Fly shop in Albuquerque and his guiding did not disappoint. We have been on a few other guided trips in and out of New Mexico and James provided an experience customized for our skill level and the conditions at the time of the trip. We caught some great photo worthy fish and too many littles to count. James also provided fantastic info about fishing in other parts of New Mexico and great conversation through the trip. I would recommend James to anyone at any level of fishing to book a trip with James for any awesome day on the river!

My wife and I knew we had to float the San Juan on our way back to ABQ from CO. I got introduced to James through a friend and had a call with James to nail down details. It was evident from the get go that James is different from other guides and is not a punch the clock kind of guide. We had an amazing day on the water and netted many quality fish on different tactics. When choosing a guide it is almost as important to find one that is a solid person and fun to spend the day with. James put us on fish with his in depth experience and local knowledge of the river. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great guide in the area. Thanks, James!

I had James as my guide today. James was one of the most outgoing fishing guides I have met, that not only put my on fish, but put me on a great time as well. I hit double digits on fish today and had a few great catches! No guided fishing trip can top this one. I would 100% come back.

I had a very special day fly-fishing with James on the Rio Chama. The river was a very special, hidden gem with ideal trout habitat. James is a very comfortable and positive fishing companion who has taken a thoughtful approach to his craft. For that and many other reasons, he is an excellent guide for the any angler from expert to a beginner. Take the time to visit this remote part of the country and enjoy the solitude that the area can offer. I am looking forward to my next trip out that way.

I am so glad that I choose James as my fishing guide. I was looking for someone to familiarize me with the local area and get me into fish. Not only did he do both of those things he also taught me to Euro Nymph and greatly increased my fishing success. He was equally as adept in the drift boat on the San Juan as he was hiking the Chama. He really put in some extra effort on the Chama and it is a trip I will not forget.
Thanks James

I booked a trip on the San Juan with James to learn how to euro nymph. He was a great help taught me how to read the sighter, I caught so many fish and several big ones. It was an awesome day. He was a great guide, so encouraging and helpful. He knew where the fish were and how to approach them to make the most out of your fishing. I learned a lot. It was a super fun day!! 🎣🎣

James is an excellent guide and is an awesome teacher and generally awesome person. If you want to have a great experience and also catch fish James can do that for you. I took my dad on a float trip on the San Juan and James did not dissapoint. We had a great time with him and we both highly reccomend him. If you live in New Mexico and want to fish with a guide hire James from About Trout! Check out his youtube and you will see hes a highly trained and deadly fisherman. He has a license to kill it on the river.
