Lush & Magnificent Views of the Mo Chhu Valley - Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
The 45 to 60 minutes walk/trek towards the golden spired /tiered Chorten is beautiful..after crossing a wooden bridge across the Mo Chhu river one has to walk through lush paddy fields and as one climbs higher the view and the trek gets increasingly enchanting ,breath taking and tranquil. Once at the Chorten ( 3 storey structure) a series of stairs lead to the terrace where a 360 degree view of the beautiful valley is possible. Half way to the Chorten is a sheltered place housing a huge Prayer Wheel .A local family sells fresh fruits. Along the way there are couple of rural vendors and paid restrooms in their homes. This Chorten was build to ward off evil eyes/spirits and is accessible to visitors but please mind the steep stairs. Would not recommend for the elderly and highly recommend a walking stick to avoid slipping. This trek though simple and mild does kind of prepares you for the Tiger's Nest trek.

Panoramic views from the temple top and a good walk to get there
The monastery is a relatively new construction only built in 2004 by Queen Tshering Yanddon Wangchuck mother of the current king. The building is constructed in pagoda style, and it is possible to go inside and walk up to the top where there are super panoramic views of the valley. Decoration inside is full of angry images that reflect negative energy which is meant to be a counterbalance enabling good luck and long life for the king. It is a very pleasant walk up to the temple with views of rural farming life all along the track passing a large prayer wheel on the way.

    Wow! Well worth the hike.
It's about a 45-minute hike to get here, but you won't regret it. It's not the largest chorten complex, nor the most flashy. Inside the chorten, you can walk up the stairs to different levels, finally reaching a small viewing platform on the roof. The views are stunning over the valley, but not for those with a fear of heights. One of the things I appreciated the most is that we were the only ones visiting at the time. The peace and tranquility while we admired the chorten and natural beauty of Punakha were reinvigorating. This is definitey a must-visit in Punakha.

A brisk walk through paddy fields and then a hike up a small hill brings you to this place of absolute tranquility. It takes about 30-45 minutes from the car park which is the same spot where you do rafting on the Mochu ( female river). From the car park you cross the river using a suspension bridge and then through the fields to the hillock. Built by the queen mother to ward Bhutan of obstacles and for world peace, it’s an awe inspiring building of 4 levels. You can go to the top and the views from there of the Punakha valley are worth all the walking. At the ground level the gods are very wrathful (vajrakilaya, to subdue the evil spirits) and as you make your way up they get calmer finally culminating with the tranquil Buddha. The building is relatively new, commissioned sometime in 2004 and the exterior has a pagoda style yet soaked in tradition. Don’t miss this if you are in Punakha.

Our driver dropped us and our guide on the roadside from where we crossed a suspension bridge across the Mo Chhu River to begin our steady climb up to the Chorten. The Chorten was built by the mother of current king in 1994 to mark the silver jubilee of his father the 4th king. On route a farmer had provided a resting place for walkers with a toilet which we used for a small charge. We also spoke to an elderly gentleman selling fruit on the side of the track who via our guide told us of his life in the army. When we finally reached the Chorton after about a 60-minute walk we headed straight to the roof level for some magnificent views across the Punakha Valley.

A path leads from the roadside to a bridge across the Mo Chhu, before climbing steeply up to the chorten itself. Visit in the cool of the morning then sit to catch your breath and enjoy fabulous views up and down the lush Mo Chhu Valley.
Once you reached there then you will have beautiful view of Punakha Valley

This chorten can be reached by hiking on a hill for 40 minutes to 1 hour. The hike starts after crossing a suspension bridge over Mo Chhu river, trailing through paddy fields and then on a hill surrounded by pine trees. At the top, there is a big Bodhi tree, huge prayer wheels and the chorten. The chorten is 4-storeyed with statues of deities on each floor. The top-most floor is an open roof that provides a panaromic view of the entire Punakha valley and the Mo Chhu River.

It's a bit of a hike to get up there but well worth it and it will prepare you for the Tiger's Nest. We started at the top (to admire the views) and slowly made our way to the bottom. Basically we went in the opposite direction and I think we had a better experience. Stairs are a bit narrow and steep so be careful.

You will have a lovely surprise when your guide and driver take you along the river for a hike up to the Chorten or stupa. The area is well worth a visit as you get to see different aspects of life in rural Bhutan. First you cross a suspension bridge and if you are lucky as we were you may see white water rafters about to leave for the raft down the river to Punakha. Then you have a lovely walk through the fields and can see the locals farming their land. The walk up to the Chorten is gradual on a well made trail with lots of pretty trees and flowers. The Chorten itself and the 360 degree views are wonderful. It is surprising to find the Chorten is only relatively new compared with most structures in Bhutan. It was built in in 2004 by the Queen Mother with the intention of bringing peace in the world in general, and to clear obstacles for Bhutan in particular. When you go inside you can climb four stories up to the roof with great views up and down the valley. It is a good half day trip and well worth a visit. Take your time and enjoy the walk and the views. Best to wear closed shoes and carry your own water and snacks.

A 1 hour trek through fields to reach this chorten was fun :) and the views are amazing. The chorten has many floors filled with Buddha statues and full of paintings. It is just amazing. Nothing more to say. The kind people on top gave us some cold drinks to quench our thirst once we reached the top :) on the way we purchased some guavas too from a sweet boy and his grandpa..

The trek up to Khamum Yulley Namgyal chorten is one of the best things that I did in Bhutan. While it's not challenging for seasoned Trekkers who can reach the chorten in about 30-40 minutes, the trek can be arduous for others (can take well over an hour). Nevertheless, you'll get to walk through beautiful paddy fields and the views en route to the top are quite amazing. Once you reach the chorten, head up to the terrace and catch a glimpse of the very beautiful Punakha valley. Anything that you click here is wallpaper material!

To get to this amazing chorten, one must cross the river on a suspension bridge, walk through a multitude of rice and mustard fields and make a fairly strenuous climb to the top. Once you arrive you are rewarded with a lovely view of the valley below. Entering the temple one finds three levels that are all decorated with beautiful paintings and statues. The climb to the top gets to an outdoor viewing area that affords and an even better view of the valley. This was one of the top attractions of our trip.
