Unlike other temples I visted in Punakha where I'd say take-it-or-leave-it, this is one is not to be missed. The artwork inside the temple is outrageous, covering all the walls, pillars. The inlaid wood flooring is stunning as well. Across from the temple is a brilliant white stupa with even more statuary in nooks all the way around the building. It is one of the most artistically beautiful temples I saw in Bhutan. Another small bonus is that there is a road going direct to the nunnery, so no need for a hike as with most temples/monasteries/nunneries.

This was the only nunnery we visited in Bhutan. We were glad to have come here.
This nunnery is located on top of a hill, from where it looks out over the entire Punakha valley and the surrounding mountains. The monastery is relatively new. Everything is quite clean, and the garden is very well maintained. The main temple is beautifully decorated and full of statues characteristic of Lamaist Buddhism.
Our best memory of this monastery is a short time spent with the nuns. Several of them communicated with us in English, and they were all friendly and always smiling. This was so nice to us that we lit a butter lamp and made a common wish.

The nunnery is on a hilltop overlooking the Punakha valley and was built as a college for the Nuns. There is a stunning white painted Stupa in the grounds and when we visited there were also few nuns studying in the grounds. In the main building the woodcarvings and buddhas were amazing.

The Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup nunnery was built as a Buddhist college for nuns that is located on a hilltop in Punakha Valley. The nunnery is very visible from the valley below because it is the only complex located on this particular hilltop. The feeling at the nunnery is that of serene peace which can be attributed to the prime location on this hilltop with beautiful landscaping all around. One very distinct structure at the nunnery is the large, white-colored Stupa that is very similar in design to that of several other Stupas in Nepal.
The nunnery is a nice, quiet and peaceful place to visit - checkout the view from the nunnery to the Punakha Valley below the hilltop.

A quiet and serene place to walk around. Didn't see many nuns though when I visit in December. Easily covered the whole place in 20mins.

If you are short of time, could possibly skip this place.

The only nunnery we visited on our tour of Bhutan. A friendly place, we were greeted by some young nuns who were offering some souvenirs that they had made, suncatchers, etc. As well as religious training this nunnery provides life skills and craft training to the nuns.

It is difficult to find this place if you go without a guide, which we did as we are from India. Driving from Thimpu, a few kilometres before reaching Punakha, you have to take diversion towards left to reach this place. The signboard does not say that the road leads to Nunnery but gives some other name. The place is well maintained.

We walked up to this place from our hotel early in the morning. The nunnery is set atop a hill with a wonderful view. Walking up, we could hear nuns chanting while sitting at different places on the hillock in the premises - a very young nun seemed to be competing with the echoes of her chants. They charge a nominal entrance fee but are not very particular about it - we weren't carrying any money and were let in. The place is very peaceful and one felt totally immersed in the morning routine. We liked the place so much that we walked back at dusk with a few friends (paid the fee this time) and luckily were able to participate in the evening ceremony where a there is collective chanting and recitation of scriptures. Quite ethereal to the uninitiated.
One can also buy hand-woven bracelets from the nuns - some of them were quite comfortable speaking in English and Hindi. Great experience !

I would definitely recommend visiting the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup nunnery when in Punakha. It is a nice, quiet and beautiful nunnery tucked away in the mountains. The view from the top is amazing and the place has a nice calm feeling to it.
