- Peter RDartford, United Kingdom1,337 contributionsPleasant walk to the Fertility TempleStarting from the main road we first walked through the village with local artist and souvenir shops which were displaying the mad monk’s legacy. After leaving the village and walking through rice fields we arrived at the temple. The temple is a draw for couples wanting children as the priest was meant to have the power to improve female fertility and provide childless couples with children, which can still be seen by the many testimonials displayed in the temple.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 30, 2023
- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom7,594 contributionsFertility Temple of the Crazy MonkPleasant walk up hill to this monastery around rice fields and up paths. This is the fertility temple of the "Crazy Monk". The village reflects the cult by having pictures of phalluses on the walls. Various tourist shops too sell a variety of colours and sizes of phalluses. Ask the price before you think about buying. We asked about one item in a shop at the start of the hill but decided not to buy as it wasn't quite what we wanted. We asked the price of a similar item at a shop further up the hill and was quoted four times the price! The temple itself is a little different to normal - as you might expect for such a cult.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 30, 2023
- ashishBengaluru, India291 contributionsOkay templ/trek/visitIt's a mini trek cum temple. The fee is 500 for adults and 250 for kids 5-18yrs. The temple is similar to any other Buddhist temple so I wouldn't count much on it but ride to the temple, and mini Trek is pretty decent. Can spend an hour here. Has small fruit stall and snack shops nearby.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 2, 2024

In case u are a senior citizen , it is not of much use and the entry ticket at NG 500 per head is steep. In case u are young and feel that some heavenly powers need to be bestowed upon you, pl go ahead with pure and sincere thots !!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024

For the ritual, the woman needs to carry a wooden phallus and walk around the temple 3 times in a clockwise direction. The monk will then chant prayers, follow by choosing a name for your child and you will make a donations. Man will have to step out of the ritual hall before the ritual commences so that the diety will not be jealous of the man.

A temple dedicated to a Tantrik priest, who claimed to have great powers in increasing fertility in women and providing relief to childless couples. Small in size compared to other gigantic temples.
We had to do a short trek to reach the temple set in a scenic, green covered plateau. Nice small structure with beautiful motifs and smaller structures.
Serene atmosphere.

Avery nice walk from the main road of about an hour to the Chimi Lhakhang Temple. The way is through the village that has small gift stores, caffes and restaurants. The need for fertility brings to the Temple many visitors.

Paddy field walk is easy for most but can dirty your foot wear. Not recommended for senior citizens . Post that there is a 10 min uphill walk to the temple. Thus wear comfortable footwear. Local artician shops on the way. Temple closes at 5.00 pm . Buddhist monk students can be seen studying here.Story of a different style of stupa is populalar that it is red and black colored because of an evil dog buried here. Couples stay here for a night to be blessed with child.

This temple is about 20 min hike from the green spa resort hotel. You have to walk pass the local village and paid fields.
The temple initially only has a Stupa colored with black, red and white, built by the Divine Madman to buried the demon (a dog) he had destroyed. Later the cousin brother built the temple besides the Stupa.
The temple is interesting as it also blessed devotee for bday, good harvest, prosperity.

After a great walk through rice paddies we arrived at Chimi Lhakhang, a monastery and fertility temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley. He was a very famous monk who was also known as “the divine madman” and he built a chorten (stupa) here in the 14th century and the monastery was built here later. He is famous for being unorthodox (drinking a lot and womanizing) and trying to make Buddhism more relaxed and he is considered a hero in Bhutan and he helped spread Buddhism in Bhutan. The monastery is famous as a fertility temple and couples often come here who want to have children. We were treated to a special blessing with several relics here, including a bow and a wood penis. Then the head monk performed a special prayer for us and chanted, banged a drum and a cymbal. Outside the monastery my friend Merlin engaged in a push-up contest with some of the young monks and then did more push-ups with two of them on his back!
After the monastery we walked back through the rice paddies and a local village and enjoyed the sites and the children…as always. And we got to watch them harvest the rice with sickles and then take huge bundles of the rice stalks and beat them against a wood stump to knock off the husks. After that they will grind the rice into flour by plunging large logs onto the rice kernels while inside a hole on a stump. We took over for a couple of women for a bit and they laughed very hard at us. It was hard work!
A beautiful area and a great walk to a special monastery.

As others stated, there is not much to see and the walk is quite long. However the walk is through fields and you get to see some buildings with penis paintings. All to do with fertility.

Do the Llamas charge any fees for helping conduct this ritual? Do they understand English?
Written August 28, 2017
No fees are charged. But offerings are put in the temple.
The Bhutanese believe that the ritual gives a child to the childless parents. we have not seen any non Bhutanese performing any special ritual except visiting the temple.
