India/Bhutan border is a soft border. Bhutan Gate is beautifully designed with typical Bhutanese architecture. The gate usually allows vehicles coming from India and other way round. The entrance of people is from the other side. The India side ( Jaigaon ) is a busy trade area where Indians sell street food, mobile accessories, garments. There are showrooms, hotels and temples. Bhutanese often come here to buy cheap goods. The Bhutanese side ( Phuntsholing ) mainly have hotels, shops and bars. If you go farther, there is the bus terminal where you can take buses from places like Thimphu, Paro and Ponakha.

This is the first time ever I crossed an international border by road and is an unique experience. To make it memorable Bhutan has erected this beautifully carved structure which is usually seen at the Entry of most of the cities in Bhutan. Its exciting to see your countrymen on the other side of the Gate which extends in a fence on either side.

The entry of vehicles from Indian side is allowed only till 9pm. We reached after 9 and had to walk to our hotel which was only few metres from the gate. You don't need a permit to cross the gate. Once you are in then the next day morning we took the permit before we started our travel inside Bhutan

I first time saw this gate while crossing the border from Gairkata to Phuensiling. The Gate represents the Gateway to the Country. The local markets are at both sides of the Gate. people across the gates share a good relationships as if this is a domestic neighbor gate.
