About
Wind Horse Ranch and Riding club is a project rather a vision, seen collectively by Wind Horse Members. After meticulous planning into smallest details, this vision finally translated into reality in 2010. We started modestly with 3 horses, and grown into 7 horses for now and plans to make it to 15 horses by the end of 2013.It is located in scenic Tang Valley, Bumthang, Bhutan. The Farm land is being leased from Tang community. We have explored and carried out few trial runs. We have cleared some of the old trails, which were covered by overgrowth vegetation, due to minimal uses of the route. Our objectives are to provide enjoyable horse ride trek along scenic trails and villages both for tourists, as well as horse enthusiasts of Bhutan. We also hope to promote riding club membership as a fund raiser for good causes to the Bhutanese, and provide riding camps among the students and institutes in Bhutan. In doing, we hope that it will benefit local community by bringing more tourists, who would stay in the local farm houses and guest houses, use local food and services etc.

I'd been in touch with Wind Horse since Covid-19 times. From first meeting staff in Jaigaon to the time we exchanged farewells 10-11 days later, the level of service was totally obliging and professional. My driver and guide were well versed in the sights and hotels, as well as the road conditions. We also gelled well, sharing stories and insights. I'd recommend Wind Horse tours to any aspiring traveller to Bhutan.

A friend and I visited Bhutan in May of 2019, so this review is long overdue. I can't recommend Wind Horse tours enough - Pema was our guide, and he and our driver were both fantastic! The attention to detail and care for us for 12 days was second to none.
They were very kind, professional and easygoing. Pema always had our itinerary/permits etc ready when we entered a temple, and knew so much Bhutan's history and culture. Our driver (I'm sorry, I forgot his name!) was also was excellent at managing any bumpy or unpaved roads we needed to go on. My friend and I felt very safe the whole time.
We did about a private tour of 5 days of touring and cultural sites and then another 4-5 days of the Jomolhari trek and of course we visited Tiger's Nest.
And can I mention that we stayed at some pretty nice hotels too? They were kind of ornate with Bhutanese art

I traveled with this company in Nepal and had a wonderful experience. The planning and execution of this trip by Heera and my guide, Samjhana was perfect. All accommodations were clean and comfortable. The food was excellent. My drivers were safe and professional. With their planning I was able to see and experience so much in Nepal. My guide Samjhana was extremely knowledgeable everywhere we visited. Nepal is an absolutely beautiful country and I highly recommend travel there.

My Bhutan tour with Wind Horse Tours, Treks and Travels was incredible! My guide and driver (both named Jimmy) were knowledgeable, resourceful, kind, creative, fun and generous! They truly made my Bhutan tour a unique experience and true adventure. I felt like I was traveling with family/friends.

This April my father and I took the "Three Himalayan Kingdoms" tour, which was, to pen a cliche, the trip of a lifetime. Wind Horse is absolutely impeccable when it comes to communication and planning. They take you by the hand (sometimes literally on a few of the hikes) through the whole process and make sure your entire trip goes off with minimal hitches. And being that this is the ever-reclusive country of Bhutan we're talking about, getting us in smoothly is no small feat. They took care of our permits, visas, tickets, transportation, guides, and some meals. Of course, traveling to Bhutan is pricy - there's no way around it. But if you can swing it, you won't regret it.
In our case, Tibet, Kathmandu, and Bhutan were three very, very different experiences.
Tibet, in all honesty, was a disappointment in that the Chinese have chopped off every single tree in the region at about the six foot mark. It's a ecological genocide akin to the Lorax. The people of Tibet seem depressed and lethargic, as they are an occupied and lost kingdom, and they know it. Of course, this isn't Wind Horse's fault, but it's a reality you should be aware of. Potala Palace makes it worth it, and despite my complaints, Tibet does remain one of the most unique places I've ever been. And how many of your friends can say they've been to Tibet?
Kathmandu is absolute madness... but it was still a step up from Tibet. Despite what appears to be complete anarchy, there is a vibrance to the city that I've never seen anywhere else. They have quickly recovered from their devastating earthquake and they're almost done rebuilding everything, as of April 2019. Durbar Square and the market streets surrounding it are right out of Indiana Jones. And I never thought I'd watch public cremations happen, where they sweep all of the ashes into the river afterward. The accommodation they provided in Kathmandu was fantastic, btw.
Lastly we got to the crown jewel of the trip - Bhutan, the closest thing I've ever come to seeing the Shire in real life (yes I know you can actually visit the Shire in New Zealand but I've never been). The country's obsession with Gross National Happiness is a polar opposite from Tibet, and it's honestly infectious. It would be very difficult to be unhappy in Bhutan. Their food is a bit lacking, but their scenery, kindness, hospitality, and amazing temples are not.
A word of warning - if you go to Bhutan, you will inevitably do the Taktsang Monastery hike (Tiger's Nest). THIS IS THE MOST BRUTAL HIKE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. Do not take it lightly. Bring snacks and power bars. It is grueling to the point of delirium, I almost wonder if the monastery at the end was a vivid hallucination.
Another word of warning - take their warning to not drink the water seriously. My dad and I followed their advice... but used water when brushing our teeth... and that was enough to wipe us out for a day or two. No matter who you are, bring anti-diarrheal medication.
In the end, Wind Horse Tours more than delivered. We saw everything they promised and more. If you're a wild adventurer and still have Bhutan on your bucket list, Wind Horse is the way to go.

The trip was a peak experience of my life. Namgyel was an exceptionally good guide and he took great care of us every day. The trekking staff was excellent, especially the food service. The tents were very good in spite of some difficult weather. I think the itinerary Windhorse prepared was perfect for our time there. We first visited Paro and Thimpu, staying at Gangtey Palace (Paro) and Hotel Druk (Thimpu). Then 5 days 4 nights on the Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, and back to Paro. Namgay (our guide for the entire trip) was very knowledgeable an open to answering our many questions.
On the trek we had quite a bit of rain, so it wasn't as scenic as it might have been. However, the packing list from the Windhorse web site ensured we were well equipped to deal with all of the different weather conditions we experienced. Our camping was comfortable in spite of the weather. The trek itself was more physically challenging than I had anticipated due to the altitude, but Namgay was very good at maintaining a pace I (the oldest and least fit) could manage. When the rain did break the scenery was magnificent.
On the day after the trek we chose to take the horses to see Tiger's Nest and to skip the climb to the temple as we were pretty worn out from the trek.
Sonam, our driver, was safe and attentive.
I particularly appreciated the quick responses to all my questions in advance of the trip. And I definitely appreciated the itinerary recommendation which got us away from tourist crowds. We only saw one other group on the entire trek. It was clear to me that the Windhorse staff takes maintaining the environment very seriously.

We chose Windhorse Tours simply because of their name - there were no negative reviews so we made contact and started the process of arranging our first trip to Bhutan. From the first email, nothing was left out - we gave our to-do list and our timing and Windhorse came back with the perfect trip. Unfailingly polite and patient (I misread one email any number of times!), everything was taken care of in a calm and timely manner. When we arrived in Bhutan, we were greeted by Cen Cho and Tandin, our guide and driver for the next week or so.
Our accommodations were excellent, the local food was plentiful and delicious, particularly as we were vegetarian and I don't eat chilli, a real difficulty in a country where chilli is the national dish!
The farmhouse meal and hot stone bath experience is highly recommended - the food was really delicious and interesting - home-cooked including fern fronds and orchid buds, and bathing in a hot tub on a cold, drizzly evening was really something special.
The entire trip was everything we'd hoped and more - as trite as it might seem, we really did become friends with Cen Cho and Tandin. So much laughter along the way. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. If you're planning a trip to Bhutan, and I urge you to do so, you won't go wrong with Windhorse.

I recently did a 14 day trip from East to West with Windhorse and am very happy an satisfied with their service.
Upfront questions were dealt with in a prompt and professional matter.
On the road our driver did an incredibly good job and our guide explained everything we wanted to know from details on buddhism over history and people. Unforseen issues were dealt with in an adequate manner. I enjoyed my tour very much and would definitely recommend Windhorse!

I visited Eastern Bhutan with 3 other friends and family on a custom tour with WindHorse. It was my 2nd time going with WindHorse. The first time I joined the 13-day Drukyul Walking tour and I was mesmerized by the landscape and pristine beauty of Bhutan. So I decided to come back to see Eastern Bhutan which is known to be less touristy.
Going on a tour with WindHorse one was assured the top quality of service. WindHorse prepared everything from how-to-prepare, what-to-pack, visa to greeting and touring without a hiccup. I enjoyed very much emailing with Jambay, preparing for the Bhutan trips.
We entered Eastern Bhutan from Guwahati, India. We got transferred by car from Guwahati to the border town of Bhutan, then we were handed over to the Bhutan tour guide. Due to a strike at the border of India, the WindHorse van could not reach Samdrup Jongkha on time to pick us up. The tour guide Sonam had to go by taxi all the way to Samdrup Jongkha to meet us at the time we reached the border. We were so happy to see Sonam although the van did not arrive on time. Thanks to Sonam for arriving Samdrup Jongkha on time for us.
Sonam took care of our visa at the border. Since the Windhorse van had not arrived, Sonam got us a taxi to get to the hotel. The Windhorse van arrived the hotel just a little bit after us. What a relief !
Eastern Bhutan is very low key and so much quieter with very few foreign tourists at the time we were there. Easter Bhutan is at a lower elevation thus has a subtropical weather and warmer. What stood out of Eastern Bhutan are those small villages, like Wamrong where we stopped for lunch on the day we drove from Samdrup Jongkha to Trashigang. Life was simple at those small towns
We visitied Trashigang, Trashigangtse, Rhadi, Yongkola then drove to Jakar. We visited monestaries and schools. We watched a football game at an elementary school. What a lovely experience in Bhutan.
Yongkola is a paradise for birding. I chose to stop in Yongkola not because I am a serious birder (in fact I know nothing about birds) but because I wanted to stay deep in the forest. Due to our choice to stay in Yongkola we were mistaken for serious birders and got laughed a lot on how well we were prepared for bird watching (with no bicular :-)). Yongkola is very remote, beautiful and quiet. It was exactly as I imagined. We took a long walk in the very early morning to spot birds. The air was very cold, crisp and fresh. The walk was actually on the National Highway, passing through a deep forest. Only bird chirping sounds broke through the silence of the forest. Our tour guide Sonam was very serious in spotting birds to show us but we were just happy walking on such a peaceful morning.
I was most excited when we drove from Yongkola to Jakar, on the zigzagging highway. That part of the highway was my favorite section. The scenery was outstanding. I was so excited seeing snow as we approached Thrumpsingla pass which is the 2nd highest mountain pass of Bhutan. As I love cold weather and high elevation, the snow in Thrumsingla pass really excited me. We stopped and walked out in the snow. Our tour guide Sonam and our driver Dawa hung prayer flags. It was a memorable moment.
Since I liked Jakar so much from my 1rst trip, I chose to come back to Jakar again in my 2nd trip. After the 2nd trip, I still vote Jakar my favorite destination in Bhutan due to its high attitude, beautiful and pristine scenery. As Jakar is far from Paro, it is still not yet inundated by tourist as in Western Bhutan.
Our original itinerary for Jakar was to do sightseeing and visit monasteries. However Sonam came up with a brilliant idea of giving us an introduction to horse riding in Tang valley instead. At first no one seemed to be excited about the suggestion. But the horse riding adventure turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip. Although I had some difficulties with my stubborn horse, I had to admit that horse riding was the greatest adventure. Despite the challenge of being a newbie, the ride was wonderful across beautiful meadows. The scenery up high was gorgeous. Thanks to Sonam for such a wonderful recommendation and making the effort selecting the right horse for each of us. To me, the horse riding adventure was the best event of the trip.
After Jakar, we flew to Paro, and met with another WindHorse tour guide, Tampas,, who gave us a short tour of Paro. The following morning Tampas took us up to the Tiger Nest. Learning from my prior experience, I recommended to start the climb early to avoid the heat and crowd. It was the best decision to start at 6:30am. The cold air in the morning made the walk up to the Tiger Nest so much easier. We completed the round trip in 6.5 hours at almost 2:00pm.
We concluded our private tour of Bhutan in Paro.
Sonam was very funny, knowledgeable and did not miss anything from the smallest facial reaction to hints of complaint from the customers. Sonam was an experienced horse rider and a good birder.
Tampas was also great. He carried our bottles of water and clothing in his backpack, going up and down the Tiger Nest. Thanks so much, Tampas.
I want to leave the best for last: our driver, Mr Dawa, always with a smile on his face, was the most gentle person who helped us a lot with our luggage and food on picnic days.
WindHorse service is always outstanding. One cannot expect less.

We did a tour with Wind Horse in January 2016 as part of our honeymoon. We had a wonderful time! The Wind Horse staff was very helpful, from booking the tour, flights and visas with Ugen in the Minnesota office to working with our guide, Namgyel, and our driver, Dawa Tshering, in Bhutan. Everything ran smoothly from start to finish.
Namgyel was a great guide - friendly and full of information and suggestions for extra sights. He was a big part of making our trip so enjoyable. He also had us well prepared for the Tiger's Nest hike by taking us on the Lungchu Tsey pilgrimage the day before, so that our legs were warmed up! We appreciated Dawa's driving skills, especially with the dirt roads from Thimphu to Punakha.
Our hotels were also nice, especially Hotel Druk in Thimphu and Tashi Namgay Resort in Paro, and the food was delicious everywhere we ate. We enjoyed trying the Ema Dahtse at every stop, and salted butter tea at our farmhouse lunch!
We loved our time in Bhutan, recommend the country and Wind Horse to all, and hope to come back someday soon! Thank you!

Hi
Depend on travel duration, travel date and port of entry. Generally to assign guide during peak season would be very difficult.

Hi Wind Horse! I've been trying to find how to contact you. I did a horse ride in Nepal last May. I had thought one should trek but was asked by a friend to join her and another on a ride. It worked well being able to both trek a bit and the ride was always there. I have read the great reports of your trips. I would like to know what elevation you go to ... , the total costs, is there a single supplement cost etc.? When are your trips going? I am sure you would include the Tiger's Nest on the trip. Any other info you can give me the better. I am Canadian so wonder what the Canadian cost would be. Sincerely Judy Jackson
Written October 15, 2016
