In the heart of Albania lies this little gem. Each house is unique and particular. The welcome of the local population is warm and the view from every unique glimpse. I'll let the photos do the talking.. too bad just for the rain

Berat was one of the most important Albanian cities during the Ottoman era, and a major craft center specializing in wood carving. Today, it is one of the best preserved Ottoman cities in the Balkans and considered to be the center of the southern Albania and it was proclaimed a “Museum City” by the dictator Enver Hoxha in June 1961.
Old town Berati - also called the “Town of a Thousand Windows", become a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. its traditional Balkan style houses that climb up the side of the hill upon which the 13th century Berat Castle is situated.
The windows of its gorgeous Ottoman houses line both sides of the Osum river and wink at each other in the sunlight. The nickname, “the Town of the Thousand Windows was given to Berat, due to the “skyline”formed by its white houses and their windows, that are "climbing" on the city's hills. When you visit the city for the first time, you instantly notice its seemingly "never ending windows". These houses, belonging to the late 18th and the 19th centuries, typically have two floors with the ground floor made of stone, and a prominent upper floor painted white, and roofs covered with red ceramic tiles. They have large wooden windows which, because of the steepness of the hill and close construction of the houses, appear to be stacked one over the other..

Gorica............Christian quarter of Berat. White windows, glorious old white washed buildings.........what's not to like?
I know there's complaints out there about it being rundown or a bit shabby......that's what you want though. While the opposing quarter Mangalem has most of the charm...it also has all the tourists. Crossing the bridges and seeing the other side gives you a sense of Berat in olden times. Sure the steps crumble. Sure there's broken doors, and you're sure to see some garbage. Albania is waking up after a long sleep.....and it will take time to put it together. However....if you've come here, you come to see it as it is....not what others feel is should be.
Tucked away on the hillside, Gorica is the little time warp written about in guidebooks everywhere. It's s bit of a mess but don't let deter you. There's beautiful views of the river and the Muslim quarter of Mangalem. All those pretty pictures are taken here. Not only that, at night when the town is all lit up....you see it best from here. Plus they have some wonderful B&B's, wine bars, and hidden up the hill are some of the best dining experiences. Dig deep......there's a reason you are here. Gorica is wonderful!

Should you visit this part of the magnificent town of Berat, make sure to freely wander around its narrow streets! The architecture is really amazing and the exploration of Gorica will surely make your visit to Berat quite interesting and memorable. Beautiful old buildings, the Gorica bridge, several churches and mosques, old coblestone streets are just few of the things that you will like about this quarter. Definitely worth a visit!

We stayed in the old town.
Entrance to the castle through the main gate is free after 16:00
It is better to go to the castle by car, there is free parking - it is difficult to climb the hill, especially if you have children and a stroller.
We enjoyed your visit to this wonderful city!
We rented a car for a trip through
EasyRentCars - we like their user-friendly interface and reasonable prices.

A lovely place to spend an hour or two. We crossed over the bridge towards Gorica and looked back to see the famous iconic view of Berat - a thousand windows. A good opportunity for a photo.
We then spent a little time walking the streets of Gorica. It’s small and there’s not a huge amount to do aside from enjoying the view and the buildings. We stopped at Lorenc’s Guesthouse for a cold beer in his lovely garden. I’d highly recommend this - he’s super friendly and happy to chat.

Gorica is the "Christian sister" of the Turkish Mangalemi quarter. It is a short distance from the town center and can easily be reached by 2 pedestrian bridges and you can easily stroll along its medieval lanes. There are great views of the opposite side of the Osum river, your cultural appetite may be wetted by an orthodox church with great paintings and icons inside and if you want to savour the atmosphere more thoroughly, you can stay in one of the guesthouses, which rent rooms in traditional houses

Wander around, see the architecture, stop in a cafe. And see the Orthodox Church. There are no signs, it’s easy to get a bit lost, and you’ll need comfortable shoes to deal with the construction and stone passageways. Sad to see all the trash. Still, it’s something not to miss.

Very beautiful ancient city. Is a relic of the Ottoman era. We can enjoy the ancient housing and its surroundings. At the top there is a castle that is not less interesting. Very easy to reach from Tirana. Only 1 hour and 30 minutes (100km). Can use a taxi or take a tour that is widely offered in the city of Tirana ...

After visiting the fortress, we stopped at the main road to view the ancient quarter of Ottoman houses and buildings on the side of a hill that faces the Osum River. From a distance, the houses looked spectacular with its white-washed walls with many windows, earning it the town with a thousand windows and it is listed in the UNESCO world heritage sites.
Due to time constraint, we only stop to take some photos before we left for Tirana.
It is an experience not to be missed, if one is in Berat.
