- Zhang ZChina3 contributionsThought-provoking ExperienceVisiting Coconut Tree Prison on Phu Quoc Island was an eye-opening experience. The initial impression with the mannequins can be quite intense, but it quickly gives way to a deeper understanding of the prison's history. The exhibits provide a compelling and informative overview of the hardships faced by the prisoners and the remarkable stories of their escapes. Despite the somber subject matter, the visit is both educational and thought-provoking. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about the island’s history and the resilience of its people.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 5, 2024
- Danielle SSydney, Australia48 contributionsMoving experienceA very moving experience. Was surprised that there was no charge to enter the prison. I would have been happy to pay a nominal amount to help preserve the area as it is important to be able to relay to the modern generations, just how horrific it was for the people of the time. Education is paramount so that history can or should not be repeated.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 10, 2024

It is located in the south of the island, so if you are going to visit, it is more efficient to visit it together with the ropeway (Sun World) rather than alone.
When I went to Con Dao Island, I visited the prison used by the French army, and the impact was so great that I thought this must be amazing too, so I visited it, and although it was much smaller in scale and grotesqueness, it was still worth seeing as a negative heritage.
It's good that you can see it for free, but since it's a place visited by so many tourists, I think it would be better if they charged money to manage it properly and put together better exhibits and explanations, but for better or worse, it's free to see, and the exhibits and explanations are half-baked.
However, there are no facilities like this in Japan, so it's definitely worth visiting.

Having visited many war-memorials or museums, this one is shocking. The lack of integrity and respect for those who suffered so immensely there is shocking. It is a harsh, horrible sight. They display of the torture methods comes across as almost horror-entertainment. We felt terrible that there was so little warning of what you would see there and could not believe the families that took their small kids there. Our boys of 18 and 20 were completely in shock.

Really enjoyed our time here , spent about an hour walking around , lots of information to read so didn’t need a guide . The biggest surprise was didn’t cost a penny to get in , toilet facilities and coffee shop on site . Fascinating however at the same time hard to believe people can treat each other this way . Torture tactics were horrific

I found this tour quite emotional. Seeing some people seeing it as fun and clicking their cameras at everything, when I felt sad at mans inhumanity to man. This prison is quite graphic and makes the point of how horrid the war was.
A thought provoking trip.

The place is well worth a visit. Terrible part of Vietnam history. Many strong impressions. It might be good to familiarize yourself with the history of the Vietnam War beforehand.
It is free to visit the prison, but you can also buy a guided tour.
As there are a lot of signs and information along the way, a guided tour is a bit redundant.

We were dropped off here on a hop on/ hop off bus , it's a sad place to see . You can only imagine the suffering . On the day we went it was boiling hot , so we didn't stay long as there's no shelter or shade as you are walking around . Cafe at the back to get a sit down and some shade . Bus stops right outside and comes along every 40 minutes .

Pretty bare bones. Heard this place was reconstructed from ground up in place of the original one. Make sure to check out the tunnel at the end. It’s pretty cool and if you don’t know it’s there you could easily miss it.

While the figures are not in the best condition the graphic nature of the exhibits may not be suitable for younger kids. It is a piece of history, told from the other side and is worth visiting. It's in the neighborhood of the cable car and can be done during the 90 min cable car lunch break (12-13.30).

I’m visiting Phu Quoc in 4 weeks. Do you guys recommend booking a snorkeling trip to fingernail island out there? Also, I would like to visit the coconut prison and Pagada. Can I do this on my own? If yes, how can I visit this place? Thanks any information would be greatly appreciate.
Written April 21, 2018
Hi Christian!
Fingernails island was nice, but the beach area very small and also small area for snorkeling. Gam Ghi Island is much better for snorkeling. Did not visit Pagada, but coconut prison you can visit on your own and it is free entrance.
Best regards,
Sofia

Fuiste en agosto??? Hizo muy mal tiempo?
Written February 23, 2018
Hola,

Would this island be OK for a 72 year old with walking difficulties
Written April 20, 2017
It might be better to use a wheelchair because the prison is quite big and there are stairs that lead into each cabin.

How can I get to this museum from Duong Dong ? What would be the taxi price from Duong Dong? or public transport?
Written May 17, 2016
Phu Quoc is very small island. You can hire a taxi every minute, is cheap and safe. I have been renting a scooter and doing self made tour through all island. It was really off the beaten track. All country and island is easy going, you can arrange all services needed in every corner.
