This monument honours the wife of the governor Nakhon Ratchasima, who is said to have defended and repelled an invasion by King Anouvong of Vientiane in 1826. The monument is a statue of the lady, surmounted on a tall plinth. She is depicted standing up tall and proud. Her face is turned to the left, while she holds a sword in her right hand with the point resting on the ground. Day and night, there are Thais who visit the monument to honour her and ask for blessings.

This point is a landmark of Korat city that has it all. I've been there during the day, it's very hot and sunny. This time, the plan has changed. sleeping in the room Let's go to a coffee cafรฉ first. Then take the queue to pay respect to Ya in the evening instead. Beautiful light, cool, easy to walk, not hot feet, better than coming during the day.

In the centre of Nakon Ratchasima. A monument to the lady who saved the city. Apparently by getting the invaders drunk. Revered site.

Thao Suranaree was a hero in Korat's history. Read up on her, and visit this monument - in what could be considered the centre of town. Pay your respects - or at least discretely appreciate others doing so. After your visit, you could segue across the road to Klang Plaza 2 (or elsewhere nearby) for a meal or ice cream.

This memorial to Ya Mo was built in 1934, it is located in the old moated city centre, and shows her holding a sword of the defeated Lao. When in 1826 Lao invaders ransacked Korat rounding up people to take back to Vientiane, Ya Mo apparently rallied villagers in the area to help fight the invaders and they were successful.

There's a festival in her honour each year late March to early April. Thai visitors use the monument as a place for prayer, and to ask for good luck, health or even larger things in return for incense and flowers. Those that ask for larger favours of Ya Mo, like this be the year they get married. Will offer fruit, pigs heads or even to dress in traditional Thai costume and dance at the monument. If that larger favour/wish comes true. Should they fail to keep their promise, then they're supposedly going to encounter a whole lot of bad luck.

This is a very busy monument, Thai people flock here to pray. Situated in a buzzing area of Korat, there are plenty of eating, shopping and people watching places close by, Ya Mo is worth a stop if you're in the area.

Buy some incense and some silver leaf, take your shoes off and say a wee prayer. Lots of Thais here doing the same and it's nice to take part in a local ritual. Ya Mo is a female warrior who fought invaders from the north and people come here to pay their respects.

"Ya Mo" means "grandmother Mo" in Thai language. She was the real heroine of Korat district (around the middle of North East of Thailand). Almost 200 years ago, she was the leader of our troop fighting against Laos rebel troop, and got a win later. After she died, we've praise her as one of holy ancestor. Her monument was established in 1981 to remind her goodness for Thai country.
P.S. Ya Mo is the only one female hero in Thai History.

Yamo statue is a must for any visitor to Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima). It's important to learn the history behind Yamo (Lady Suranaree), whether it's fact or myth. The best time to go there is during the Yamo festival in November each year. The site is revered by locals and must be treated with respect.
