Amazing views on our 30-minute trek to see the Passu Glacier! We stopped to take so many photos and videos of the spectacular scenery around us. Passu Glacier itself is not a destination but the journey towards it and being in the mountains is a breathtaking experience.
The trail is narrow enough to thrill, yet wide and safe enough for first-time trekkers. There is a longer trek for anyone having more time/energy and wanting to explore further.
I saw many tourists going to the nearby Hussaini suspension bridge without trekking to the Passu Glacier. This is fine if you’re not fit enough to trek. But if you are healthy and able—the trek is really not difficult—please don’t miss this ☺️

It is hard to put into words just how amazing this area is. The scenery is magnificent.
The Passu Cones were striking against the clear blue sky.
The Passu glacier is located close by to the Karakoram Highway. It is well signed.
Trekking there is a joy. The nature that surrounds you is utterly breathtaking.
The glacier is white, meaning that it has a much brighter look to it in the sunlight and a blueish tinge.
There are different routes to the glacier. It can be viewed from above or below.
I viewed it from above which involved a fairly easy 20-30 minute walk along a trail before you get your first view of the glacier.
From the first viewpoint you can continue through an area called Death Valley (so called because there was once a village at this location that disappeared after a glacial lake outburst, leading to many deaths) which is around another 2kms
As you near the end of Death Valley you see a trail leading up the mountainside and which leads to the second viewpoint.
You can then climb downwards towards the glacier. This terrain is more dangerous and involves clambering over rocks and boulders.
The glacier is a must see. It is sad to know that due to climate change it is retreating at an alarming rate.
The meltwaters of this glacier help provide freshwater to the many people who live downstream in the valleys of the Indus River. The Passu glacier meltwater feeds the Hunza River which flows into the Gilgit River and then finally joins the Indus River.
Don’t miss seeing this spectacular glacier for yourself

Our journey started from Karimabad, Hunza toward the last known town of Pakistan Sust. Passing five tunnels with a total distance of seven kilometres and two bridges we reached the Gojal Valley. We were travelling on a smooth and outstanding highway, with magnificent mountains on one side, the splendid river on the other and the stunningly beautiful area in front. Travelling in between this unspoiled natural beauty and the pollution free environment we reached Passu. Passu is a small village some 15KM from Gulmit. We stop at the Passu viewpoint for the magnificent view of Passu Peaks and the Glacier. Passu Peaks are also known as Passu Cones or Passu Cathedral and is 6,106 meters (20,033 ft.) high. Also nearby are the high peaks of Passu Sar, Shispare Sar, and Bature. Batura also was known as Batura Sar at the height of 7,795 metres (25,574 ft) is the 10th highest mountain in Pakistan and 25th highest on Earth, and the 57 kilometres (35 miles) long Batura Glacier is considered as the 5th largest and longest glacier outside the polar region.
There are many different ways to reach Passu, either Hire a car or a Jeep to go to Sust or Khunjerab and ask the driver to stop for a while at Passu Viewpoint. Or one can hop into a bus travelling toward Sust and ask the driver to drop you a Passu Village, but in this case, you have to either wait of another bus that is going toward Sust or spend a night at a Hotel in Passu and then continue your journey toward Sust in the morning. There are different hotels at Passu where you can stay for a night or two as long as you wish but remember that in offseason when there are less tourist some hotels just get closed so it is better to contact those hotels before making a plan to stay at Passe. Keep your camera or a mobile phone fully charged as you can take some splendid pictures at this place. Also, check for weather as heavy rains sometimes can block the Highway because of the land sliding but that is for few hours or maximum for a day. Also, remember to keep warm clothes as these mountain areas get very cold in the evening and in winters due to snowfall the weather become chilling cold.
This is must visit place for those who are travelling toward Gilgit and Hunza.

People tent to go pass Passu in so much hurry to get to some-more famous peaks or town. Thank Havens we stay two nights in Passu Village (by accident, due to a booking mistake). So we got a good three day tour leaded by our local guide and drivers in between Hussaini and Zarabad villages, tracked to the neighbouring Ghulkin Glaciers above Borit Lake. A good way to get a first acquaintance with glacier crossing.
There were tracks start very close to the Karakoram Highway. They can be done in 2/3 or 6/8 hours or, over night glacier crossing with camping ones. An unforgettable, out of this world experience for nature lovers.
Make sure to ask a local to guide you the way as glaciers are disorienting and people have gotten lost here.We noted that the locals are mostly muslims. They were very gentle and sweet. We've never felt more safe here than anywhere else in the world. Besides, apart from the very few keen trackers and the occasional villagers, you'll hardly see anyone in this part of the world anyway.

In my opinion the Passu cones is a superior view than Passu Glacier, but it's each to their own I guess.
It's one of them sort of views you just don't tire of looking at. Pictures do it no justice, it has to be seen with the eyes for it to be truly appreciated.

You see the Passu Glacier just before arriving in Passu Village. The glacier is easy to access on hikes up the left side (south) from Passu. I stay at the Shisper View Hotel when I am in Passu and access the trail on the left side by walking the KKH about 200 meters from the Shisper View Hotel. From there you climb a ridge with great views of Passu, the Passu Glacier, and Passu Cones and Cathedral. Trails up to a water channel are not signed so it requires some guesswork and knowing what general direction you are aiming for. If you follow the ridge parallel to the glacier, you reach a road/track that goes down to Borit Lake (another good trek). Follow this road another 50 meters and there is a sort of trailhead and small cafe. At this point you climb and follow a water channel with great views looking down on the glacier as well as surrounding peaks. You can follow this trail all the way to Passu Gar, but this requires gaining a lot of elevation.
Another way to access views of Passu Glacier is to do the Yunz Valley hike trek which begins in Passu. You have views of the Passu Glacier on this hike until you are behind a moraine and then when you proceed into the Yunz Valley.
Alternately, you can access the toe of Passu Glacier by hiking up the outlet creek. This is the shortest and least strenuous access to the glacier and can be completed in a couple of hours.

The cones appear brown, instead of snow clad, as this is the end of summer season.
It is on karakoram highway between karimabad & khunjerab pass.
“Passu Cones” or Tupopdan, 6,106 metres (20,033 ft), also known as “Passu Cathedral”, lies to the north of the Passu village; it is the most snapped peak of the Passu region.

We passed through Passu Glacier on the way to Kunjerab Pass. It is beautiful and amazing site to visit. Drive to Paasu Glacier from Karimabad is the new KKHighway that connect to Pak-China corder. Be prepared for cold weather and snow and black ice on road, but it is worth the trip.

What a beautiful site to see. A large glacier near Passu. Worth seeing. Passu glacier is also known as "Batura Glacier". It is around 21 km long & covering around 115 sq km area. Quite near to Borith lake & Hussaini Bridge, all can be covered in a day.

Should we plan a stay of a day or 2 at passu kindly

Both, while staying in Hunza you can go to Nagar Valley and walk on Hoper Glacier, it is a lifetime experience to walk on a glacier. The Nagar Valley itself is stunning too. It is nearly an hour and a half drive from Hunza either you can just go to Nagar stay there for 2 to 3 hour, walk on Hoper and return back to Hunza. Or you can even spend a night a Nagar, there are hotels in Nagar where you can stay.
Naltar is famous for its lakes and a very beautiful area. You can do Naltar in a day, while travelling toward Gilgit from Hunza you can visit Naltar, spend a complete day exploring the lakes there, and go to Gilgit or you can also spend a night in Naltar and in the morning go to Gilgit.
If you need any further details you can contact me on my WhatsApp +92-333-3426115.
