Tulamben beach is a quite and peaceful beach located at the Northeast side of Bali; famous for diving where its USS Liberty shipwreck beached on January 1942.
The locals are very friendly and the hard-worker ladies make some money by carrying the diving equipment of the divers.
Really nice beach for both snorkeling and scuba diving!

Talk about contrast in beaches from one side of an island to the other, Bali's Tulamben Beach on the east coast is nothing like the powdered sand along the west coast of the island paradise. Traveling from the soft sand and dramatic cliff side beaches of Uluwatu and Sanur to the palm tree lined rocks & volcanic boulders of Tulamben is a bit disorienting for the first time visitor to Bali.
A unique and dramatic testament to the power of the Mighty Mount Agung, the volcanic stones that compose the beaches of Tulamben represent the massive eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 which killed over 2000 Balinese. The eruption of the 10,000 foot stratavolcano literally rained fire & brimstone down on the east coast and coated the area in a ash & lava rock encrusted icing. The dark black stoney beach is not very comfortable for streaching a beach towel on the ground and catching some rays, but, it does make for some great opportunities to break an ankle if your not careful walking into the surf. The dark grey & black stones line the ocean bed and create one of the prettiest areas in the world for scuba diving and macro photography. Thats what makes this beach a five star place for me. Its different for sure, but, the history for its appearance and the world class diving available immediately off its shores make Tulamben Beach a don't miss location on your own adventure to Bali. Scenic and lush shoreline compliments a laid back and quiet vibe as compared to the dramatic surf & cliff side climb of Bali's west coast beaches which offer a faster paced surfing inspired party vibe.
So if you want a serene experience with a emphasis of exploring the world class diving available in Bali, travel to Tulamben Beach and check out its volcanic rock uniqueness. Its beauty will inspire you,, its world class diving will entertain you,, just watch your step and don't break an ankle walking around on it!!

When I was there, there hardly was any waves. The sea was so calm and clear. Black pebbles lined the shoreline glistened in the water reflecting the sun's ray.

No sand, just really big rocks. Can't easily or safely walk along it. Really hard to get in the water too.

It was a bit of a drive from Ubud but the trip became a bit of a highlight in itself. Stop off at Tirtra Gangga on the way, and if time have a swim in the pool.
Arrived at Tulamben for an hour or so of snorkelling - beautiful water, loads of fish over the wreck, which is easily accessible from the shore. We hired a guide, which was handy because we began to drift quite a bit and he kept us from ending up a long way from where we started. It's quite a poor area so happy to help the locals out a little.
Lunch went down a treat and then back home along the scenic drive through mountains and beachfront. Really enjoyed this day out.

Well if you are here not for diving purpose then I think you might not love this area. There are various dive sites along this beach and is great experience to dive here when you enjoy the warm water, good visibility and decent current. Entry point for this beach is quite rocky so beginner might find it a bit challenging to do shore dive but overall is a pretty good beach to relax apart from the dive

We stayed 2 nights and 1 day in tulamben for snorkeling. Important to note that there is nothing to do in the village so you really need to come there for diving/snorkeling only.
It was great to be able to snorkel and come so close from a shipwreck. However we did not find the coral that amazing (it is probably much better if you dive!!) and then went to Bunutan close to Amed, where it was much better!!

Tulamben Beach offers divers access to not only the USAT Libery but also shore dives at the Coral Gardens and the Dropoff. Beautiful dives with heaps of fantastic tropical life all on the black volcanic sand. BUT probably some of the MOST difficult shore diving you're going to do! That 10 metres from the palm tree line across the rocks into deeper water is hazardous! All those rocks are spherical the waves roll them, your weight roll them. The dive guides and beach helpers do their best but saw some of them fall. A heavy duty roll of conveyor belt rubber rolled out each morning and back up after night dives would make it easier for everyone with less ankle damage.

Tulamben Beach is one of Bali's hidden gems for sure. Take the time to find a place to stay for a few days and explore the coral gardens and beautiful tropical fish only metres from the shore.

This area is overlooked by an active volcano so do not expect white sandy beaches. Large stones and volcanic gravel prevail but on saying that the scenery is amazing.
