- James TPerth, Australia11 contributionsGreat Fun and Value for MoneyGreat value, very well organised, and delicious food. The hotel pick-up was on time. The market tour was something I wouldn’t have done without a guide. The class itself covered a lot of dishes, all delicious. Everyone was able to be very hands on with the cooking. Chef Komang and the support staff made it a great experience that would definitely recommend booking.Hello Jamest, Thank you for your fantastic review and giving us the highest score! - CarylSeattle, Washington4 contributionsAmazing class, highly recommendedIt was our first time doing a cooking lesson overseas and it checked all our boxes. They exactly what we were looking as we learned a lot about Indonesian culture and what it means for the balinese people. Chef James is funny, informative, and kept the class engaged the whole time. Everyone else within the staff were really kind. They also offered free pickup from hotels, just make sure to confirm the time. But overall, I would definitely do it again. I recommend that anyone who is considering it, just do it because you will have fun and you won't regret it.Hi, Thank you for your positive review of our cooking class and thank you for taking our cooking class. - Chris and Emily M1 contributionLean how to cook like a localSo much fun. Chef Tommy and the team took such good care of us, starting with a market tour and then cooking a number of local dishes. Very engaging and informative around Balinese culture, plus taking us through step by step on how to work with a range of local ingredients. We booked for 2 families with 5 teenage kids between us (ranging from 13 to 17). Kids had a great time and hopefully learnt a few things along the way. Was great at the end to sit down and share the food that we had collectively prepared. A differnet type of experience to try, but well worth it.Hi, Thank you for your positive review of our cooking class and thank you for taking our cooking class. - aaronaus6Wollongong, Australia206 contributionsAmazing cooking class, informative, take home recipes, so much food! Definitely recommend! We did the cooking class. Everyone was praising how delicious all the food was. The staff were communicative, friendly, informative and attentive. If you needed anything they were there ready to assist. It was paired up in groups of 4 people at each table preparing and cooking the food. We made 8 dishes (and some spice pastes/bases) which were shared between the 4 people, we could not finish, as much as we wanted to because it was so yum. The tour through the market beforehand was so interesting to learn about the products, produce etc. We were also able to purchase local packaged cooking items that were suitable for return to Australia. I cannot wait to try recreate the dishes. Would definitely recommend. Food was so good that we ended up visiting the restaurant later in the trip to dine in!Hello, Thank you for taking our cooking class and thank you for taking the time to leave a review. - John DGreater Melbourne, Australia6 contributionsHighly recommended. What a fantastic morning! Taken to the real markets and given an explanation on all spices and herbs and how to use them. Fascinating! Then went back to Nia to learn to cook 8 different meals, all hands on. The guide did not let anyone hide in the shadows……everyone must have a go. Met some really nice people, including one guy who got “dragged along” by his wife…….that guy was raving about it at the end. Lastly we got to sit down together to eat the food we were taught to make and it was all delicious. Since then, I've been bringibg my friends from the Philippines to this class because I wanted to share my awesome first experience. The class is really fun and dynamic. Paced just right without sacrificing the teaching of techniques and tidbits about the ingredients and the dishes themselves. Chef Komang is very warm and engaging. Wow! What a morning- we visited a local market and our guide told us about the local produce. Then we started cooking. Our chef Jim was informative and funny and our group had 12 people, split into 3 tables. We learnt how to make 12 dishes and the whole team were super efficient bringing out the ingredients for each dish, and whisking our dishes away. After a couple of hours, we sat down to a feast that included pork in sweet soy, nasi goreng, chicken sate, green papaya chicken salad and so many more. We got a recipe book to take home, and the whole experience was fantastic.

Tommy is a very knowledgeable chef and he understands how to explain Balinese food to Aussies. The location is a restaurant ( I had no idea what to expect) and it was all booked out for us doing the cooking lesson so it was very exclusive. At the end we made so much food. Had so much laughter. Had another Bintang and I would highly recommend anyone who loves cooking to do this, you will learn a lot and will be able to use your new understanding at home . 5 stars ⭐️

This was the second cooking class we attended in Bali and unfortunately the worst one.
If you like large crowds, chaos, and people bumping into you, this is the class for you.
We started by getting into vans and going to the small market, which was fine. We learned about some of the ingredients we were going to use in the cooking and then made our way back to the kitchen.
We didn't realise just how many people were attending this cooking class until after the market when everyone came back in their groups.
There were 3 groups of people with 20 ish in each group which were spread out at the start. We got into cooking, and that's when everyone was everywhere. Washing hands, going to the bathroom, drinks being ordered, Waiters trying to help/ not knowing what to do.
Tommy our chef was the only reason why I didn't leave as he was funny, but the other people helping out (waiters?) were rude, didn't know what was happening, telling me to add/not add things when I didn't need to.
Just when I thought that it was getting better as the other classes were sitting down to eat their food (we were running a bit behind), the restaurant opened for lunch 🙃. As you can imagine, chaos started again, I got shoulder barged a few times, trying to avoid being in the way but in the way of everyone, waiters carrying food/drinks everywhere trying to get around.
Paying nearly the same price for me and my partner to have a one on one experience at our frist class (not associated with Nia) and getting mentorship, not just putting stuff in a pan and not knowing what is happening is not what we wanted. For anyone considering this class- it really depends on what kind of environment you like to be in when learning.

Dear Katie P,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your detailed feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear that your experience at our cooking class did not meet your expectations. Your comments are invaluable to us as they highlight areas where we need to improve.
We sincerely apologize for the large crowd and chaotic environment you encountered. We understand that a crowded and disorganized setting can be frustrating and detract from the enjoyment of the cooking class. We strive to provide a pleasant and educational experience for all our guests, and it is clear we fell short in this instance.
Your feedback about the confusion and lack of organization during the class is concerning. We regret that our support staff did not provide the assistance you needed and that their behavior negatively impacted your experience. We will be addressing these issues with our team to ensure they are better equipped to handle large groups and provide clear, consistent guidance to our guests.
We are pleased to hear that Tommy, our chef, helped make your experience more enjoyable with his humor. However, we acknowledge that this does not make up for the overall chaotic environment and lack of personal attention you received.
Regarding the overlap with the restaurant's lunch service, we apologize for the additional disruption this caused. We are currently reviewing our scheduling and class organization to prevent such issues from occurring in the future.
We appreciate your comparison with your first cooking class experience and understand your disappointment in not receiving the one-on-one mentorship you expected. We are committed to improving our program to ensure that all participants receive the attention and guidance they deserve.
Once again Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. We hope to have the opportunity to make this right and provide you with a much-improved cooking class experience.
Warm regards,
Nia Cooking Class Team

We had Tommy as our chef who was awesome. He had an amazing way of sharing his knowledge of the local cuisine and entertained us throughout the 5 hours we were there, first with a walk through a local market and talking through the different ingredients that are native to Bali and then when we got to Nia’s Warung where we made a variety of dishes. He’s a man of many talents and if you have him as your host, ask him to showcase his beatboxing skills! A great activity that our group thoroughly enjoyed.

From whoa to go to chow down this was an action packed, fun, interesting, well-organised, hygienic, inclusive and entertaining experience - oh, and we learned a lot about local cuisine! It's a jam packed morning including a trip to a market, cooking 10 different recipes, and being entertained by chef/comedian Tommy through out. It was five hours, but the setting is great near the flea market, there are lots of fans to keep you cool when you crank up the wok action, and the team are a well oiled machine, so dirty dishes and food prep comes and goes without even noticing it. Coffee, cold drinks and beer are also available to buy throughout. If you're interested in Indonesian food, want to see a master in action, and happy to get your hands dirty, this is an amazing course to do - highly recommend it. Certificate, photos and recipe book a really nice touch too.

If you are a looking for a fantastic hands-on cooking experience in Bali, then I would highly recommend this one. I chose a half-day group lesson which included a visit to the local market prior to a fabulous morning of cooking.
We cooked a large number of fabulous dishes - all of which we we involved in preparing and cooking.
Guidance and expertise provided was brilliant - our chef and his team of assistants were all really knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.
All recipes were provided to take home, and my the lessons were adjusted to cater from my dietary requirements.
You will finish the session with a fabulous lunch of all the creations made throughout the morning - if you are someone with a real interest in food, then I would recommend this experience as a must do!

Nias cooking class provided our family of 4 adults and 3 children with a fun, informative, and memorable experience. They were very accommodating as we had 2 small children who wanted to be involved, which they were more than happy to assist with. My father in law had allergies and they quickly attending to his needs and prepared some special dishes for him, which were served right on time. The educated chef was funny, kind, and more than willing to help. Would definitely recommend this class ! Thanks again guys!

This was such a fun class!! We started with a market tour, then we're whisked away to a restaurant where we cooked 12 dishes, which sounds like a lot but everything was soooo good, the prep was done so well that everything flowed and Tommy (our instructor) kept the vibe funny, light and informative. Then the best part, the eating!!! We were also given small cookbooks and certificates at the end, and Tommy was great at telling us about substitute ingredients in case we couldn't source the ingredients at home!

We booked the vegan cooking class - group of 4 adults and 2 children. The host Tomi was amazing - he taught us traditional Balinese flavours and we made a paste and a variety of dishes. Each dish was flavoursome in its own way. I'd highly recommend the class for anyone keen to learn Balinese food the vegan way.

Can anyone please tell me how long this class goes for? Also how many dishes you make? Would it be appropriate for my 12 year old son as well as my 69 year old father?
Written October 2, 2016
The class went for between 4-5 hrs. It started with a tour of the local market which was great.
There were no kids in our class but I see no reason why a 12yr old couldn't take part.
Most of the ingredients are already chopped which was great as we had more time to actually cook and learn how the different pastes are prepared. I can't remember how many dishes exactly but Karen M's comment sounds about right, trust me there was more than the 7 in our class could eat.
I agree I would do it again to learn something different as they have a variety of menus available depending on which day you go.
I thoroughly recommend this cooking class, enjoy.
