Having read all the reviews, I thought we were in for a real treat. The first hour started well but thats where it all stopped. This is not an interactive cooking class. You get to chop a few spices (ie garlic and chilli) & if you are lucky enough to not have a class of 12 then you might even get to cut a chicken or fillet a fish. Apartfrom this 1.5hrs, the rest of the time is spent sitting at the bar listening to stories and the history around spices etc. The 3 of us lost interest very quickly as did a lot of the class (this was obvious as they started spending a lot of time on their phones). You do not get to prepare your lunch or assist with cooking in anyway.
The chef was talkative. The cocktails were nice and there was an abundance of food, however, by the time the food was served around 4.15/4.30pm, everyone was full from the juice cocktails that no one could really enjoy the food.
Sorry but I was extremely disappointed. This is an information session. Not a cooking class

After confirming the details, our party of four arrived early to our agreed pick up location (Bintang Supermarket) and waited...and waited....
After 45 minutes, we emailed Dean without success to find out what had happened. Finally, much later we were able to phone and were basically told that we were forgotten....
This cooking class was a much anticipated activity that had been planned well before our trip to Bali. We had read many positive reviews and booked with Dean based on those recommendations.
Mistakes can happen, but surely Dean realised that he was four people short for his class? He had our phone numbers but we were not contacted.
We were very disappointed in Chef Dean's Cooking Class.

We had booked and had our booking confirmed 9 days before the outing. Given the time and location to be at, and making sure.. again we got confirmation. We arrived 15 minutes early and waited.. and waited . After 45 minutes we sent an email asking when we’d be picked up, we sent another and got no response from either.. with the help of workers at the supermarket pick up ( which was really great because even the security guys were concerned and offered to ring after seeing us waiting for so long) rang them. The response was really ridiculous, the “bus driver did not know the supermarket and they were already in Seminyak”, the 3rd pick up point and no other options were offered to us. Importantly, Chef Dean knew he was 4 people short for the pick-ups, they had our phone number and could have quite easily sent another car to pick us up or even on their way back from Seminyak. Too bad for us, we got a taxi back to our hotel and sent another email requesting an explanation, and sent 5 others after but had not been given the courtesy of a response. Until, the most poignant point for me, my wife tried to re book it again, for just for the 2 of us for the following Monday (with a different email address). We got a response.. On the Wednesday after to say Saturday was available.. Go figure???? I replied to that email indicating our displeasure at not getting any response from our previous emails.. and finally got a response 6 Days after our original booking .. an apology of sorts.. But not from Dean, he did not have the common decency to respond himself. Common decency and respect cost nothing, we were afforded neither. Judge for yourself “There is mistake pick up, that we suppose pick you up at Bintang 8.15 am, but driver being told to pick up in seminyak and the driver pick up somebody else. It’s really confusing and chaos that day and we don’t know who we pick up that day” this is the exact wording. I mean we were expected to believe that they picked up some unknowns at $110 per head who hadn’t booked … very plausible. After viewing previous reviews.. this is not an isolated occurrence …

We had booked the cooking class several weeks in advance, we were sooo looking forward to it after all the reviews here. The day arrived, we had an appointment at 7:45 AM at our hotel, but no one showed up. We waited until 8:15 AM and then we were sure than no one would came as the appointment was at 8:30 AM in Seminyak. We were very disappointed and had no explanation...

Chef Dean was incredibly friendly and made the class a wonderful, off the beaten path fun experience. Was on vacation with my girlfriends and this was a great peek into the local marketplace as well as the background of Balinese cuisine. We partook in the Marketplace Tour + cooking class; highly recommend this option for a more well rounded experience.
The entire day/class was very well organized. After meeting up in the morning, we were taken to the Badung marketplace (where many locals shop) and introduced to all the various produces and meats. Chef Dean also gives you an insight to the actual local pricing of items. This was super helpful for those who wish to purchase souvenirs since the locals hike up the pricing of items anywhere from 100-1,000 times (no exaggeration) when they see tourists.
Then the class proceeded back to the beautiful villa the cooking school is located at where you get opportunities to try your hand at cooking everything from sauces to meat to fish. Along the way you get to learn many professional chef cooking techniques, opportunities to try prepping items you may not dare otherwise, and all the while there is a team of chefs and assistants to help you out where you may need. Then class the culminates in a feast dishes that everyone worked on during the day.
Other tips: 1) the marketplace does not operate on first-world health standards so dress in clothing you won't be upset when (not if) it gets soiled; 2) the local cuisine is heavy in sauces and spices so those who have sensitive stomachs should bring some relief medication (antacids, etc.)

Have been to Bali many times, so this was the ONLY thing I wanted to do this time round! Not real quick at replying to emails, but eventually booked and set to go! Had to make own way to Seminyak Square for pick up @ 8.30am...luckily not too far for me..Romeo took us straight to markets at Denpasar. Eyeopener for those who hadn't been there before.(I had). Met Dean who showed us around and procured items for the class back at his home in Sanur..Note: not held in Seminyak anymore! Walked across from markets to bute little coffee shop where Dean bought us all coffee.. even got my tick of approval. Driven to Deans house/cooking school, and into it! Dean was thoroughly approachable and conversed easily with everybody, explaining, along with his souxchef..1st- chicken(head & feet) ready for BBQing, 2nd-huge Squid(how to pull head out and clean), thirdly- how to clean & fillet a snapper the Indonesian way!) along with the famous Nasi Goreng, and sambals, the food list went on and on, accompanied by refreshing drinks and cocktails, made by Justin Beber & Elvis..I can throughly recommend this experience, even though some might think it on the expensive side for Bali. After gormandising ourselves with the vast array of dishes placed on the table before us, we were driven back - luckily for me straight to the villa... thank you Dean, have recommended your cooking class to all my friends that will be visiting.

Excellent Cooking class today, such an incredible day & experience. From taking us to the Local Markets to returning to the Restaurant & learning to cook the most wonderful Balinese curry pastes was a truly amazing day and so worth doing in your trip to Seminyak, Bali.

What a fabulous experience. I would not really have considered doing this except my husband has taken up a passion for Asian cooking. Although we’re foodies, I wouldn’t have considered taking a full day of our vacation to go to a cooking class. But boy – am I glad I did!!! After reading Tripadvisor and Dean’s website, we decided on the full day and asked to be picked up at our hotel for an extra fee (unless you know the pick-up points, I would highly recommend this – we waited 20+ minutes at one of the stops for someone who got lost).
We started at the market which was pretty amazing and intense. We then had a cup of coffee before driving to Dean’s cooking school. His school is on the first floor and his home is on the 2nd. One of the things that made this day so incredible is because you actually got to learn a lot about how the Balinese live. We started talking about spices and one of the things that made this class so enjoyable was that we used all of our senses. We didn’t just hear about the spice, we picked them up, rolled them between our fingers and tasted them raw. We learned from Putu, Dean’s sous chef about the importance of the offerings and the colors in the offerings and how they tie to the colors of certain foods. We learned what they eat daily, but also what are the foods specially prepared for temple days. We cut, we chopped, we took eyeballs out of squids. We snacked, we had cocktails (included of course) and had a wonderful and relaxing day. We were very lucky that our fellow classmates were enjoying it as much as we were and that we all enjoyed experiencing this together.
I highly recommend a cooking class with Chef Dean – it was an incredible and different way to experience Bali.

Made a booking based on the wonderful reviews they get and was really looking forward to the day. However no one came to the designated pick up point to pick me up or even had the courtesy to respond to an email asking for an explanation as to what had happened.

Dear customer:
I am very sorry for this situation. I was put in hospital early last year. Our admin had trouble informing some guests including yourself.
Please come for FREE cooking class with me, Chef Dean, next time you are in Bali with advanced reservation. Sorry again.
Yours truly,
Chef Dean Fisher

We booked the seafood cooking class for 28 August before leaving Australia and received email confirmation that we would be picked up at 8.15am at MacDonalds Jimbaran. We waited from 7.55am until 9.15am but unfortunately for some reason, you were a 'no show', and likewise you have not responded to our email of 28 August to explain what happened. This was to be the highlight of our holiday and we are extremely disappointed.

Certainly it is, tho in the class my wife and I attended it was 4 couples. There is no reason for singles not to do the class, it is a very friendly atmosphere.
Go for it!

Approximately how large are the class sizes. And does everyone get to prepare the meal start to finish or just participate from time to time?
Written July 25, 2017
The day we attended there were 5 of us plus another 3. I think this is fairly indicative of numbers.

Hi class sounds great! Are the cocktails throughout the entire class or only with the meal?
Written July 12, 2017
Hi I am interested in doing this cooking class but would like a price without all the cocktails - I don't drink alcohol at all.
How do I do this please ??
Written May 1, 2017
I don't believe there was an option without the cocktails, a lady in our "team" didn't drink and they made her mocktails
