Worth the hike up the steps and the stupas are beautiful especially the most modern one and the views are sublime. Just don’t go when a festival is on as we did, it was bedlam on the festival of Pchum Ben both human and mechanical traffic.

I ended tanking a mini bus up the main road to the road bracjphing I took the area then a motor bike from there. It was the weekend and not crowded but mostly locals. You walk up the stairs to the main pagoda then flow the ridge along and come down the other side. Great views of the country side.

Every visitor to Phnom Penh and to Cambodia in general, should take the chance to "get off the beaten track" and to visit Udong. I found the sacred hill and temples to be lush and gorgeous. The countryside in Kompong Speu province is incredibly beautiful while the sense of history permeating this former Royal capital, was simply outstanding.

The 509 steps was quoted to us by a number of people as we approached Using Mountain. Wether there are 509 steps is debatable as we didn't count them (we were a bit intimidated and focussed on breathing). There are many stopping places to break the climb so litigant as bad as it seems at first.
The view from the top is truly spectacular. From here the flat plains extend as far as you can see terminating in mountain ranges that you just don't notice from the ground. Phnom Penh is also visible from here.
Young boys attached themselves to us and gave a fantastic summary of the history of the place. The boys were twins and spoke excellent English. Both were studying English and it really showed. Of course there is an expectation of payment which they said would go to their English tutor. How could you refuses they were both so positive about their futures and assured us this was not a school day.
Turk Tuk to Using was $30US for four people. Admission cost $1 each.

About an hour an a half from Phnom Penh. You get there driving through a very dusty road. There is a new temple there which is garish and not very nice, besides this there are two more old ones
You have to climb nearly six hundred steps to get up. There is a nice view from the top.
It was very dry and I do not think it is worth a visit.
There are over a thousand statues of Buddha beneath the new temple in a sort of cave. Most of them were new.

Our river cruise brought us here. It was well worth the drive. We enjoyed the hike up the 509 steps. It wasn't as bad as we were expecting. The views were spectacular.

I visited the Temple in Oudong and as such spent some time in the town. Beautiful drive from Phnom Penh, 100 minutes. Kampong Speu Province, from what I could see is very pastoral. Great trip, especially during Songkran
