Visiting here did not reveal much of their daily lives as monks and nuns. We did see the monks (in saffron robes) and nuns (in white robes) line up for mealtime holding their own food bowl or food tray.
Being part of a Buddhist blessing was truly special for me.

This was just what was needed after spending the day before at the killing fields memorials. This is one of Cambodia’s major monasteries. The ornate sculptures and facades are gorgeous. The golden lady in the lake is impressive. There’s lots of steps, no shoes allowed in buildings. The grounds are large and beautiful. You will see and learn about the many monks who live there. Our group was lucky enough to receive blessings amid a shower of jasmine and lotus 🪷 petals. Highly recommend.

We had ventured the 50 km from Phnom Penh to Oudong Mountain to visit the old royal capital of Cambodia, and were totally disappointed with what we found.

But as we were driving back, our tuk tuk driver-cum-guide took us to the nearby Vipassana Dhurak Buddhist Centre, and we spent an hour marvelling at the glorious architecture and gardens of this site.

The primary purpose of the centre is to teach Vipassana meditation techniques, but the complex is open to the public and you are welcome to wander the gardens and grounds, and to enter the main temple, which is grand affair, sitting up several layers of stairs on a mound. When you go inside, look up at the incredible detail of the murals painted on the ceilings.

If you visit here, please remember that this is a living religious sanctuary, so please dress modestly and act with decorum, not forgetting to take off you shoes if you go into the main wat.

As this is a working monastery, no hats anywhere on site and no shoes in the temples. Functional toilets at the far end of the site. Be sure to catch the golden lady in the lake (Kong Hing) being over-looked by the Buddha. Generally flat throughout the site but many steps up into the buildings. No refreshments on site but many street stalls on the way to and fro.

As part of our cruise we were brought here to be blessed by a couple of Buddhist priests. This consisted of delightfully being pelted with jasmine flowers. Across the street it's possible to hike up 400+ steps to a temple and get an awesome view of the area.
