This picturesque camping area is a protected refuge for the rare bontebok, a South African antelope recognizable for its red coat and white face.

It was good to see Cape Zebra and the endangered Bontebok but the obviously unmade tracks for vehicles here are not clearly signed. We went round the short track twice because we missed a turn. On another occasion we encountered two signs to the exit...More

We drove the east loop and saw lots of bontebok, one hartebeest, a secretary bird and a kite. We were quite happy with what we saw, but met others who had walked a trail and saw nothing of note. Our advice would be to drive...More

Nice peaceful well cared for park, not much to see but did get the Bontebok and tortoises, can't say I'd rush back but also wouldn't avoid.

I was told that there wouldn't be a lot to see but I did expect to see something at a reasonable distance. I'm sure they do great work in breeding and protecting what they have, but as a spectacle, give it a miss.

Visited in the afternoon and spent few hours driving through the park, photographed loads of animals and even got out for a walk down into a small lake area. Would throughly recommend it, gravelly roads were pretty rough but luckily I had a rental :-)

We arrived at the park in sweltering heat to be told there was no shop to buy food, charcoal and wood. The website indicted there was a shop where all these items could be purchased. We had to drive back to town to buy provisions....More

Once you've seen one Bontebok you've seen them all! We did a tour by car and it is a lot of driving over dirt roads to see about ten Bonteboks. The tour of the park if you don't stop is about 1 and a half...More

I've been to other SAN parks and thought to come to bontebok since it's close enough for a weekend away. It's very quiet and relaxing but if you want to have your day filled with activities - this isn't it. The accommodation is expensive but...More

Binoculars are essential in this vast area if you are serious about seeing wildlife. The dirt roads are reasonable given our hire car but it took some time to get used to really looking for the animals. Once we had spotted some bontebok we were...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Do we need a car to get there? We plan to take the intercape bus from cape town to swellendam which would drop us off at the Groentemark in Voortrekker street. It will be only two of us. Is is safe enough to hike? Is there perhaps a group that walks often in the area? We hope to travel on the 31st July for a few days. Thanks!

When we visited three weeks ago that was not necessary. I don't know about now with the South African Xmas holidays, but would still think it is not necessary.
