This former government building, an architectural treasure in itself, is now a museum containing some impressive artifacts. Particularly noteworthy is a collection of late 18th and early 19th century Cape furniture.

The outdoor buildings are situated in a lovely quiet setting nestling close to the mountains. Very informative and relaxing atmosphere, not like a museum.

The museum comprises various buildings that showcase the different aspects of life in Swellendam back then. There's 3 main areas that are within walking distance of one another, and it's a nice place to visit to learn some history.

The museum not only provides a glimpse into the past lives of the residents of Swellendam, but is also a very pleasant place to visit. The tea room at nearby African Shades B&B is a good venue for lunch - I can recommend the Biltong...More

The museum is on three sites with a mixture of displays that are well presented. There is also some practical displays operating which describe the manufacturing processes of times gone by in the town. Well worth a visit.
