This former government building, an architectural treasure in itself, is now a museum containing some impressive artifacts. Particularly noteworthy is a collection of late 18th and early 19th century Cape furniture.

We were staying in Swellendam and, being a bit of a history buff, I had read about the Drostdy Museum before leaving UK. The actual visit surpassed my expectations. It gave us a very interesting insight into the area's history. There are three sites - all within easy walking distance from each other - and all provided fascinating well labelled... More

This museum - in three parts - gives a very good insight into the South Africa of the Dutch East India Company days of colonial administration. Though somewhat favorable to the times, there is enough insights and information on the tough and unfair environment that the population endured. The physical and political information on the times gives a valid insight... More

Beautifully maintained and well stocked with old artifacts of the bad old days of Afrikaner history. One does get the impression that these were very hard people, quelling unrest, dealing with the British, punishing naughty locals in very dark windowless cells. But the interesting exhibits are all there for you to see and handle. And thankfully things have changed in... More

We spent a few hours here on a Sunday morning. The museum is spread over several buildings with a large number of exhibits relating to the history of the town. Staff were very helpful and we had a bit of a verbal introduction to the place before being set loose to explore. Coffee shops and restaurants all very close by... More

This museum is spread over a few sites, all within a few minutes walk of each other. You wander around at your own pace and there is adequate information about the history of Swellendam. We stopped for coffee in the gaol house, service a bit slow, but this is Africa. A pleasant and interesting way to spend a morning.

Swellendam is a very beautiful country town with a large number of lovely old buildings. It is one of my favourite places in the Western Cape. A stroll through the area around the old drostdy, followed by a visit to the drostdy and the museum complex , is very rewarding. Don't miss the cute little Mayville House. There are a... More
