Vergelegen - no ordinary Estate.

Founded on 1 February 1700, Vergelegen (meaning "situated far away"), has been under the ownership of some of the world's great explorers and visionaries, each of whom, in their own way, have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate.

With its world renowned handcrafted wines, history spanning over 300 years, heritage, exquisite gardens and refined cuisine, it comes as no surprise that Vergelegen continues to be the choice of the discerning visitor seeking a total sensory experience. For this reason, the Estate has borne witness to many visits of heads of state and celebrities from all over the world.

Think of Vergelegen to spend quality time on your own, with your family and friends or business associates - wine tasting centre and cellar tours, Camphors at Vergelegen Signature Restaurant, Stables at Vergelegen Bistro Restaurant and the Picnic, are only a few of a myriad of enjoyable activities at Vergelegen.

We invite you to experience the world of Vergelegen first-hand.

We were a little surprised by Vergelegen, it is amazing. It is the historic house from the first Governor, the house is renovated and shows how it would have been. The staff were very helpful showing us where to go and talking about the history of the estate. The grounds are lovely to walk around, with very old trees and... More

Do go for the picnic in the Camphor tree forest. It is truely special. The picnic is divine and the setting is even better. Very relaxing and one can't get closure to naturue in this special setting. Well worth the effort, but do book well in advance.

We went to Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West for one of their picnics, and what a wonderful 5star experience it was. Wonderful service and brilliant wines. Stunning setting under the trees and fantastic food. For R235 per person, we had a 6 course picnic, incl artisan breads, truffle butter, duck liver pate, pork pate, homemade pickled beetroot and baby... More

This was a fascinating journey through history. Far too much information to absorb in a single visit. All the gardens were fabulous and relaxing.

I was invited to the Vergelegen estate for a gala dinner party. It is about an hour's drive from Cape Town. As you drive up to the estate, you will note the well maintained gardens. The setting is beautiful. The mountains form a spectacular backdrop. The house is a grand building - the architecture is Dutch. As you walk towards... More

After our visit a few years ago we said we would definately be back to Vergelegen. Many times we mentioned the estate to friends and family visiting the area. We indeed went back and again Vergelegen was great. We did the garden tour, the cellar tour and wine tasting. All very recommended. A nice lunch afterwards will make your visit... More

We visited Vergelegen on the way from Cape Town to Hermanus and were very surprised to find that it was not signed from Somerset West - very surprising for a major attraction like this. It took some time to find it as we did not have a GPS device. However, once there we were delighted with the visit. Lovely, beautifully... More

Vergelegen is about an hour's drive from Cape Town and well worth the trip. The house and gardens are really beautiful, the furnishings and paintings in the house are lovely and the historical information provided adds to the enjoyment. The curators in the house are also very helpful and informative about the contents. In the grounds we loved the fountain... More

Thoroughly enjoyed meandering in the gorgeous landscaped gardens of the amazing wine estate. Perfectly pedigreed patience practice perfect harmony in these grounds. Do enjoy a stroll amongst the herb garden, visit the stables restaurant, enjoy majestic mountain views or simply relax in the homely atmosphere of this estate whilst tasting great local wines or a smile and coffee with a... We booked Vergelegen for a wine tour and tasting. I was really looking forward to it as Vergelegen is a highly regarded but fairly rare wine in the UK. The estate buildings are stunning set in wonderful gardens. Worth the visit for these alone. The weather was also rather extraordinary - sunshine and also low cloud over the surrounding mountains...
