The staff were unbelievable. Very attentive and their knowledge of the wines and food was exceptional. We ate on the terrace which was new to us. It was lovely, however one slight criticism! It was an extremely hot day and the AC wasn’t very effective. We must praise Pauline, our hostess for our lunch. She is fabulous! This is a cool winery based slightly elevated for a good view when outside but the tasting in done in the mountain so it’s like you are in a cave which is different to others in the area. A good place for sparkling cap classique but there is a variety of tasting options including a pinot noir one if you prefer red wine that’s a good option. We called a few places for an early supper today , a Monday , The person who answered th phone at Haute Cabrere was very friendly and said we should come over.
Upon arrival and requesting a table we were rather curtly told to wait ! Upon asking the said lady if we could sit where there was a view , she very abruptly, " just wait can you not see how busy they are!!"
I think 2 of ALL the tables had guests .
We nearly walked out .I asked the lady her name and it was Courtney
Our waiter was delightful. His name was Foster
I ordered the crackling puffs as a starter
Bubble wrap would have tasted better !!
The menus given us were grubby
The food was very very average .
The presentation was really poor and the pasta was inedible due to the overbearing spices . The rack of lamb plate was awash with gravy and the spelt horrendous. The vegetables a black lump of ugh
The sirloin was ok but again no presentation
The roast potatoes were burnt and disgusting.
My chicken with a salad made from tomatoes from the garden arrived and was so unappetizing as it hardly looked flame grilled .The salad was a shocker and way below average
To make matters worse the staff gathered around and were noisy as they cleared off other tables
The restaurant had 1 table of customers besides ourselves
Courtney did come and ask how the food was We had agreed not to make a scene
The views are stunning but am afraid the restaurant will not see us again

Thank you for the detailed feedback. We have addressed the service issues with the serving staff and will take the matter further, as feeling unwelcome is not something we want any of our guests to experience.
When it comes to guests enjoying our food, we are always happy to replace dishes that are incorrect or not how they should be. We are sorry you did you mention this to the manager, it would have potentially saved the visit.

I had such high hopes for this visit that we planned our entire day around. Upon arrival we were greeted with what can only be described as exasperation by the hostess which we thought was maybe just stress due to high volume of guests or assumption that we had no reservation, which we did. However, as we were seated our server was disinterested, seemingly annoyed and extremely inattentive. There was absolutely no elaboration on the wines aside from “this is Chardonnay” or any concern for the wine or food quality/ effort to engage us as guests. We had planned to stay at Haute Cabriere for lunch and a wine pairing and had some other stops planned for our afternoon. Over THREE hours after our arrival and continuous requests / reminders for

6. Our bill
7.The machine to pay so we could leave ...etc.
After watching numerous couples and groups leave who had arrived at the same time and much later than we did and expressing our disappointment, we finally left with nothing but a disingenuous “sorry” from the two managers we spoke to. One actually just left and never came back to resolve or explain whatever was happening with the service for our table.
I have never written a poor review but this was just too much for such a seemingly straightforward afternoon. Don’t waste your time here. There are so many other fantastic spots in the area with amazing food and awesome and friendly service. Haute Cabriere is not one of them.

Modern look...over a spectacular view of the valley. Perched on the northern side of side, the newly renovated restaurant has great views of ten valley (continue further up the pass for even more!!)

We spent a couple of hours here as the view is simply stunning and the seats were comfortable.
The wines were ok but we had to ask for the bill three times until we received the correct one. Just something to be aware of as the first one was more than double of ours. By the third time I was becoming very wary of the constant overcharging.

It is almost two years since our last visit, which could be described as mediocre at best. The new restaurant has stunning views, is open and airy, the food is dramatically improved and the service faultless. We arrived for dinner in time to appreciate the stunning sunset. Instead of a starter we opted for a selection of items from the tapas menu, all of which were delicious. For mains I had the Kudu fillet, which was tender and juicy with a wonderful jus.

I like pairings and was looking forward to the macaroon one at haute cabriere.
The setting was a bit disappointing as only inside (very dark) or between 2 buildings (no view) - The lady explained that the view seat were for the one just having a drink and tasting had to be done in the cellar (which makes sense).
Not many explanations on the wines or macaroons (I had to re-read the newsletter that I received about this experience to refresh my memory). Enough for amateurs, but passionate people might find that limited.

Great food but poor service
Our waiters were really poor. First of all, they forgot to place our order so we ended up waiting very long for our food (people who arrived after us received their food before we did).
They also had no idea how to serve white wine, had to ask twice for a bucket of ice to be brought
No apologies or acceptance of mistakes from the waiters and after we complained the waiters turned very sour which is very poor.
No one even came to apologise after for the poor service.
Won’t be back again.

From a base in the well-known Southwest of Western Australia, this ex-South African was escorting Aussie mates to wine estates around Franschhoek; having already visited Waterford, we thought nothing could top that but Tamo & his mother certainly set that record straight with their enthusiasm, knowledge & flexibility. Plus, the wines are excellent! Being one-eyed followers of Syrah, we were reluctantly persuaded to try their Pinot Noir & thoroughly enjoyed it; the pinot contributes to an awesome blend with Syrah. I heartily recommend Haute Cabriere as an essential part of any tour of the Huguenot valley. All the very best, Tamo!

This place has a very good and beautiful setting. The staff was friendly and the service was good however we got the feeling that it was overbooked.
What was unpleasant for us was that there came a group or 2 that made such an extreme noise that it was hard to enjoy the whole experience. I understand that you get these kind of thing but, if it was me, I would have tried to manage it a bit better as the restaurant was well behaved by almost 90% of the customers. I did not see any manager or staff having that conversation with them.
I am ok with loud but this was extreme and continuous.

Thank you for the feedback and sorry your experience was tainted by the noise. It is such a tricky thing to manage, and our team is often subjected to a lot of feedback when they do ask guests that are obviously too loud to relook their volume.

An excellent tasting with very attentive and knowledgable staff. Based on the wine tasting we then booked lunch at the panoramic restaurant - incredible views, delicious wines, fabulous food. Pomisa who managed the restaurant was excellent in her role and all the staff were attentive and knowledgable.

Our wine tastings ranges from R55 - R70
We are currently undergoing renovations and our Tasting Room is closed on account of this. We do have a pop-up Tasting Room at the Franschhoek Beer Co. until end August 2019. Tastings are R30 for two wines.

We've booked a dinner reservation at Haute Cabriere on April 21st, and the only availability was indoors. All the photos show the Terrace for seating, and I believe that the wine cellar is in an actual cave - is there any view from the inside of the restaurant and/or what is the interior like? I'm not sure if we should hold out for a date that can accommodate us outdoors. Thanks for any insights ~

Hello,
We don't serve dinner outside, purely as the lighting and wine farm bugs are not ideal. You are more than welcome to come earlier and enjoy some drinks outside, if the weather plays along. If you can send me the name you booked under, we can double check where we have you seated and see what we can do. As it get's dark, a table overlooking the barrel cellar below may be the best option. You may also have a look at our facebook page for some restaurant interior shots. ( Look out for white chairs and grey overlay of table)

Some years ago,I bought my wife, brother and sister-in-law to a Saturday morning tasting hosted by Achim when he showed us fossils etc in the winery in town and we tasted various wines and then tried out the Sabrage. My wife still has the cork from the bottle that she topped. Am I correct in assuming that this is now done up the hill at Haute Cabriere?
