An incredible workout, beautiful views - but be prepared! This is no walk in the park.
Jan 2020
My first introduction to real hiking, and had I known what was involved, I would have missed it :)

If you're used to strolls in the park, flat gravel paths and occasional elevation changes through gentle woodland, this will be a surprise. A friend's daughter suggested it, and never mentioned that it was a hand over hand vertical scramble straight up (the Red Dot trail). I had a backpack with about 12 pounds of food, water, camera gear, etc., so that made it a even more challenging.

It took about 90 minutes to climb up, and the trail was very crowded due to a 60 degree day in December. We spent about half an hour at the top, then came down the Blue Dot trail, which was much less steep but still difficult. It was just as rocky and root strewn as the way up, and muddy from recent rain. If you're naturally clumsy - I am - than it will be another hour to get down, walking very carefully. Yes, some people ran down the trail like deer, others went slowly and carefully.

Once closer to the bottom, it was much more level with normal size rocks and roots, but you still had to watch where you put your feet. There was some black ice on the path near the river, and I saw someone's feet fly out from under them. No, not mine, but it can happen to anyone, any age, any condition.

This hike really spiked my interest in more hiking, just not mountain climbing :) Get there early if it's a weekend or nice weather, the parking lots fill quickly. There are porta potties in both lots. And there is a short stretch where you're actually on the Appalachian Trail, definitely a bonus.

one of the best sunset views in NJ
Dec 2020
I have been to Mt. Tammany for numerous times and the last one was for sunset.

Being somewhat disappointed as the sun refused to come out of clouds for more than an hour, I started putting stuffs back to backpack, about to leave. Then all of sudden, everything surrounding me became shed with this rosy light. That was one of the magic moments that you couldn't plan for. Instead they came to you, entirely unexpected but very pleasantly. Of course this was the most beautiful sunset I have seen in a long time.

Steep rock scramble
Nov 2020 • Family
With a lovely November day forecasted we decided to hike this spot and boy we were reward with a spectacular view. It took about an hour to get to the top from the first parking lot off 80. We took the white blaze red dot trail to the top. Then turned left on to blue blaze trail back. Total miles was like 5 miles and took about 3 hours with kids. The first mile and half was strenuous and mostly up hill once on the blue is relatively flat and down hill. Real nice river walk on the blue trail back to the parking lot. Great little hike to get the heart rate up.

more of a climb
Sep 2020
More of a climb than a hike. Don't, don't go on a weekend. You seen those pix of a bunch of guys lined up at the peak of Mt. Everest? Don't go on a weekend.

Nice view - bring a lot of water!
Aug 2020 • Family
I'd like to see it again in the fall. It was nice in the summer but the heat made the hike even more intense. If I could do it again I'd bring a lot more water and invest in some hiking boots. I wore sneakers and my feet got a little beat up.

Great views from the top
Feb 2020 • Couples
What a great hike up to the top of Mt Tammany! The views at the top are amazing! You can climb straight up the ridge on the red dot trail or take a more relax route via the blue dot. Plenty of parking, but it gets crowded by noon on nice days even in February.

The best hiking trail of Delaware Water Gap
Nov 2019
We have been to Mount Tammany many times and the most recent one was on a sunny Winter day. The hiking trail to peak is definitely the best in Delaware Water Gap.

There are two parking lots at trail head and they are always filled up quickly on any sunny day. Generally we follow the red-dot trail up and blue-dot trail down. The round trip is about 4 miles with total ascent about 1500 ft. Majority of the trail is modestly difficult, with a couple of steep but short segments on the way up. The round trip takes between 2 - 3 hours, including a break on top to enjoy the beautiful view.

Great hike!
Nov 2019 • Couples
Not for the faint of heart this trail is pretty technical and steep. Navigating over different sized rocks can be a challenge for some so make sure to dress properly bring water and wear hiking shoes. Also if you plan on going on the weekend plan to be there early the parking lots fill up quick. We started on the red trail and came down on blue great way to go for the moderate to experienced hiker. HAVE FUN! The views are worth the work.

Tough hike, great views
Aug 2019
We arrived at 7:30 because parking fills up fast. We took red trail up, blue trail down, caught the green trail to Sunfish Pond and finished on the Appalachian Trail, for a total of 10.6 miles. The red trail was by far, the toughest part. It is all rocky and uphill. Didn't see much at the top of Mount Tammany because of the fog. Saw a momma bear and cub while on the blue trail.
