Model train museum featuring many enjoyable personalities such as Thomas the Tank train and his friends. some local NJ history as well which may surprise you as a black hero of the American Revolutionary War, Oliver Cromwell of Burlington, NJ.

Great local place to take the grandkids. Trains, local memorabilia and a wonderful, caring host. Enter the property from the south of the building off Route 15 before going up the hill. Twice I have gone in the upper parking lot near the sign!

Interesting stop near Sparta

A good size model railroad fills most of the single room in this small museum. An ecclectic display of items from the owner's personal collection fills the surrounding walls. Take a few minutes to talk with the very friendly and informative owner.

Great for the very young children!

The "museum" is not devoted to trains. The Historical significance of the display has to do with local history and is limited to a wall section of the museum.
The display is a large "Christmas Tree" layout. The trains simply travel around the display without stopping. It's clean and well lighted. It's toy trains not to be confused with the the serious modeler.
They have seasonal changes designed to be appreciated by children.

A Unique Train Museum with an Enthusiastic Owner
Aug 2017 • Family
This little train museums is tucked away in beautiful Sparta and is the perfect place to bring a child who appreciates trains. The owner is enthusiastic and loves to talk about the trains displays that he assembled and is so proud of. The displays were clever and cute and since my son is a Lionel train lover he didn't want to leave.

For the grand kids

Interesting set up for some children who would love trains. The owner can be irritating as he chirps at the kids but that is mild. Has a wavy railing he does not want you to touch or lean on. I would suggest he secures it better.

Well built
Jun 2016
Of the model train museums which we've been to (Northlandz, Choo Choo Barn, Medina, America on Wheels, Riverhead, and many model train shows), Mt. Friar is small by comparison, but looks better made. The buildings and mountain look sturdy, and well built. There's a lot to see, not only on the model train display, but on and along the walls, as well. I enjoyed seeing all the antique model cars and some of the Revolutionary War history! The most enjoyable part was speaking with Mr. Molina (sp?), the owner. He's an expert in American history!
