Fantastic trail
Jul 2021 • Family
First timer .. have heard a lot about this trail and tried it today. We loved it . Did a 10K run and the trail way was so even. Nicely made. Lots of them biking, running, dog walking, and fishing. Road was a bit wet in some spots because of rain yesterday. Please avoid if there is continuous rain overnight. Trail keeps going and going for miles. Perfect for biking without traffic. There were small fly’s in the air , because of water. Make sure you wear a goggles and if possible a cap .. parking is less. Wish they made a bigger parking lot . Only 7-8 cars could park , in the place we came in. There are also other parking spots all around the trail. Thumbs up overall..

The D&R Canal represents a special place in America's economic development as it was an avenue to move goods between New York and Philadelphia prior to the age of rail. One of the first jobs my great grandfather had was driving mules along the towpath between Bound Brook and Princeton. My father took me to the Griggstown section for fishing as a kid and there used t be a nice swimming hole in Rocky Hill that my mom liked. Many times I have gone to the Canal for a walk, photography, or to work out Cornwallis' western pincer attack during the Battle of Bound Brook. Also, when showing off early American history, I often bring house guests to the Canal for a healthy walk or glimpse at the past. All have enjoyed it. Decades ago, we paddled to Princeton from Manville and returned via the Millstone. A nice trip but it was dark by the time we got back and the Millstone is not to be padded in the dark because of overhanging trees, snags, and turns. Still, it is another pleasant thing to do in the park.

Over many years, I have done both the gravel towpath and the road that runs alongside. Good place to start is Colonial Park.

MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED

I kayaked from here all the way to Princeton. In South Bound Brook it doesnt look that nice. Once you go down a couple miles it goes into deeper woods. There are turtles everywhere. The canal does have a slight current, and i think i was going against it. I really enjoyed my day on the canal

Historic walking in the beautiful outdoors

Have enjoyed this towpath over the years by bike and foot in the various towns through which it meanders, whether Lambertville, Frenchtown, or north in Raritan. Today we traversed it by foot in Somerset, at one point crossing over to enjoy one of the gardens, ponds, and walkways in Colonial Park. What a blessing!

I bike it 3 times a week and walk it when it's too cold to bike. Every New Year's Day we take our annual canal walk first thing Jan 1st. What a wonderful gift!

Great place to walk bike or fish
Aug 2016 • Family
The sand trail is wide enough for Bikes and people with views of the canal and wild life. The Raritan river on the opposite side with occasional views. On a nice day plenty of people. You can fish the canal or the river. Caught many sunnies, bluegills and catfish on the canal. Frogs and turtles present as well.

Peaceful, Tranquil Scenic walk.

The State Park along the Delaware-Raritan Canal consists mainly of the towpath of the old Canal. Both pedestrians and bicyclists use the path along the canal for recreation and fitness. In autumn it is a scenic colorful, pastoral walkway, ideal for those who want a secluded, tranquil place to exercise. Bring a good camera during the fall for the colored foliage, and during the summer for the many flowers and wildlife, especially turtles.
