As we stayed on a camping place nearby it only took us 15 minutes to get to the Doe zoo.
It was kind of busy but it wasn't to crowded, all animals where visible and yes as some reviewers described it looked like most of the habitats could use some refurbishment but this didn't bother us and definitely didn't bother the kids.
It somehow gives a rustic vibe to the zoo.
The presentation of mr.Tom started of with the announcement of his hearing impairment but again for us it was no bother and quiet understandably as he doesn't want to be interrupted and show off ignorant.
The tour was very entertaining for children and was so well organized that he didn't lose the attention of the children.
A few details which could be interesting if you're planning a trip to Doe zoo:

- The zoo was never intended to be a zoo but was and somehow still is an animal shelter, only to get funding it transformed into the zoo it is now.
Do not expect a world class zoo for a few euros.

- Just like every other zoo the best time to visit is in the summer months. There is no enjoyment in visiting a zoo like this in the winter.

- The zoo isn't only a kind of luxury animal shelter but mr.Tom and his crew also offers a working environment for people with special needs.
You won't get a 5* amusement park but you will get a smile and a friendly welcome and to be honest that's all you need these days.

Thank you to all the crew of the Doe zoo for a fantastic day out!

Fun with children!

Small Zoo with a lot of turtles :), much appreciated by children, they can feel, smell, hear and look at small animals. The entourage is friendly and based on trust.

Time we spent was around 2 hours with a 2 year old child. This included painting a duck with water paint.

There is a very small play ground included, this contains a air cushion, and a swing.

Staff is very friendly. The children got to choose plaster cast animals to paint . Very nice collection of reptiles and spiders. We were able to feed turtles fish ducks the donkey was very friendly. The tour guide animal caretaker spoke German and dutch. He brought out a skunk, geckos, bearded dragon and tortoise for us to touch. Also a baby skunk, but only to see. Was to small to pet. The snack bar was ok. The usual snack foods.the gift shop had nice things for a reasonable price. We enjoyed our visit.

We went there with my daughters school, the kids loved it. The owner gave us a guided tour through the reptile house. It was informative and the kids learnt a lot of "did you know's" from him. the morning culminated with a small talk over the insects, snakes, spiders and birds that they have there.
Its really compact but with enough to keep you interested...especially if you're 9 years old....and thats what counts. Combine your day with a trip to the Groningse Borg Verhildersum which is just up the road and you'll have a great day out.
