About
Located in Johnson Park in Piscataway, NJ, East Jersey Old Town Village is comprised of sixteen reconstructed and replica 18th and 19th century structures. They represent architecture typical of farm and merchant communities once found in central New Jersey. Dedicated to teaching the history, traditions, folk arts, and craftsmanship of the people who lived and worked throughout the region, the Village is home to ‘Raritan Landing...Uncovering a Forgotten Past’, a permanent exhibit about Raritan Landing, an 18th-century Colonial port once located on the river. Explore the site and meet the historical interpreters that bring the Village to life through their historic trades and crafts. A gateway site for the Crossroads of the American Revolution, National Heritage Area, and situated along the Washington-Rochambeau National Historic Trail, the Village offers awarding winning exhibits, living history, and seasonal programs. It’s open, free, and so good!!!
Jun 2021 • Family
It’s open! And so wonderfully educational! Visit 18 colonial houses (almost all
Built in the 1700s) set during the revolutionary period through the 1800s. We were able to see and talk to actors dressed as a printer, an English trained flint and lock musketeer, an American colonist-born rifle sharpshooter, gardeners, and so many more! Best part was it was free and attached to an awesome park. The very park where the first July 4 fireworks were shot off in 1778, two years after the Declaration of Independence was signed and right in the midst of the Revolutionary War. We also marched the parade grounds where George Washington marched the Continental Army. What a great experience! I highly recommend this historically accurate, educational, and free experience! Kudos to the county for providing this experience.

You can walk around outside, but COVID has closed any tours, etc. worth the brief walk-around if you live nearby.

Visited with a 15 year old boy who didn’t expect to enjoy the tour - the good news is he totally enjoyed our visit! And so did I.

History in my own backyard

This village is amazing! It is reminiscent of other revolutionary war sites. The authenticity of the buildings, the artisans and the costumes brings history to life. There are no fees for parking or entrance. A pleasant way to spend an hour or two!

Amazingly well preserved and updated set of buildings showing what life was like during the 18th century. A cultural gem in Middlesex County.

First check to see when it's open.
When it's open, there are very old buildings to explore to learn what settlers did when they were in the area long ago. Occasionally, folks show old-time tasks such as making chairs, and other long ago pastimes.

4th of July Visit
Jul 2018 • Family
This is a series of old homes and barns that have been relocated to this site. The folks that made this effort deserve a lot of recognition and admiration.

We visited on 4th of July, and enjoyed the celebration. We attended President Washington's speech, and listened to an 1870s piano that was masterfully played.

The old homes are appealing, but what I enjoyed the most were the people that organized this activity. They were really excited to share their knowledge of history with the visitors, and really elated to receive questions.
