About
The history of the City of Paterson includes its beginnings as the ambitious project of Alexander Hamilton and the Society for Establishing Useful Manufacturers (S.U.M.) in 1792 at the Great Falls, the early development of water power systems for industrial use, and the various types of manufacturing that occurred in the District's mills into the 20th Century. These included cotton fabrics, railroad locomotives, textile machinery, jute, and silk spinning, weaving, and dyeing, among many others. The Great Falls also represents compelling stories of the lives of immigrants who labored in the mills, those who owned and operated manufacturing concerns and became wealthy, and the quest of laborers and the labor movement for better working conditions and pay. Immigrants still settle today in Paterson to pursue their versions of Hamilton's vision, creating a diverse and vibrant culture.

The Falls themselves are beautiful and it’s quite rare to find waterfalls that cascade aggressively in a city. Nonetheless, here they are just roaring down crashing onto the walls and rocks in the river, creating the mist to be felt. Very picturesque place and I definitely agree that there should be more investment in this NJ Historical Park. Being a state that doesn’t have National Parks they should be focusing on the stack of parks they do have to properly showcase. Paterson or the State should revitalize the area around it.

This park could be a gem but instead it is treated like a garbage dump. Trash everywhere. Having falls like this in your town, you would think that people would want to take care of it but instead it is dumpy with trash all over the place. What a shame.

This was my fourth visit over the last few years. Unfortunately the debris and broken glass really took away from enjoying the beauty of the Falls, as I had my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter along for an ‘adventure’. What a shame this National Park treasure is in such disarray.

We made a stop at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park to see Great Falls of the Passaic. It was during Hurricane Henri, so it was raining heavily but the waterfall was really raging. And we weren't the only ones to see the falls in a hurricane. We parked at Overlook Park and it was just a short walk in the rain to a good view of the falls. At 77-feet, it is really impressive. Unfortunately, the park is not in a real nice area and there was a lot of trash and litter.

Absolutely beautiful. We weren’t sure what to expect, as it’s not in the beat neighborhood. It is absolutely worth the trip. There was also a festival happening while we were there for an added bonus.

I am so happy this wonderful place has been preserved and protected. This history from it's founding to all of the incredible uses through the years is amazing. It's preservation is especially impressive given its location right in the middle of Paterson, NJ. The NPS ranger gave a great hour long tour, getting right to the most significant events in the timeline. It's a lovely walk around the falls that is largely hidden from the main observation area.

Go, its worth it. A hidden gem. You would never even know it was there. It was clean and safe. No homeless people in the parking lot. The neighborhood was fine. I felt safe. Parks department people where there. You start and the bottom of the falls and work your way up to the topNeed about an hour.

My ancestors actually owned a hotel at the top of the falls in the early 1900's, so we went to see the falls as a family. It is big and beautiful. If the area was cleaned up and the park developed (some info signs, etc.), along with some publicity, this could be a major draw. I hope that is in the plans for the future, but with the way our government is spending money, there will likely not be anything left over for this.

Beautiful Falls and park. So bizarre to be in the middle of a NJ city and see this roaring waterfall system and river. The surrounding city is incredible depressed and the garbage even on the next street outside the park awful. It was hard to understand how one could be so green and clean and walk one block and be uncomfortable.

This is a nice place to visit for about an hour. There are some homeless people here so be wary of your surroundings. The neighborhood isn't that great. The city needs to keep the surrounding area clean. It is filled with debris. Across the street is the Paterson Museum which is nice to see as well.
