There are very few free beaches left in NJ and this beach is one of the team. The waves here are generally gentle, it's a little bit more rocky than others and some of the access points might be difficult for the less able.

Of course the sunsets are beautiful and it's one of the only places on the east coast where you can see a water sunset.

The parking area is a sand path away from the beach itself. The sand is soft and would be difficult to walk on for someone who can't tolerate moderate exertion. As other reviews mentioned, it's a remote location and your car won't be visible to you from the beach, so use your own judgment regarding the safety of your vehicle. Right next to the parking lot, we saw an overflowing trash containers. Not what you'd want to see, but tolerable, especially after you get to enjoy the peace and beauty of sunset. Definitely a place to escape for couple of hours of solitude. This beach has soft sand with some pebbles washing up, unlike the Sunset beach, which has abundance of pebbles and very coarse sand. Go check out a Sunset there, I would go again in a heartbeat.

Higbee beach is for the dogs, literally, not for bathing. This is where the locals take their pets so be careful where you walk. Interesting fact, this used to be the nude bathing beach. But since that didn't work out as planned, it has gone to the dogs, LOL. Great place to watch the ocean, fishing, feel the breeze, or watch the ferry coming & going.
Enjoy, Gene H.

Great beach to relax, listen to the waves, fish, enjoy lunch, kick back. Need those who bring dogs to keep them leashed though. Watching the sunset here is a must do if in the area. Not crowded.

After reading the reviews for Higbee Beach, my family and I decided to take our dog for a quick visit. That was a mistake.
It is beyond my comprehension how this beach received the ratings it did.
When we got to the beach, there was trash everywhere, and the smell of the hot garbage permeated the air, attracting swarms of flies.
My family and I will never return to this beach, and I advise anyone reading this review to stay away as well.

I love this beach,it is actually a state park left in all it's natural glory.lately it's been over-run by loose dogs but they are not quite as bad as the sex acts you might see behind the trees. It is a meeting spot and has been for years.Everyone is cool, just keep a look out.

This is a great little beach. Not your fine sand kind of beach, but family, low key, dog friendly proved you dog is leashed and friendly. Make sure to bring bags to clean up after your animal and be green head flys are around. their are no bathroom facilities or anything, its you and nature here. If you like that, you love it here.

I read about Higbee Beach in a novel a couple years ago and tried finding it last year. We were frightened off by the desolation of the parking area and the questionable characters hanging out there near the cars.
This year we went early in the day, still weren't thrilled with the isolation of the parking and followed the sandy path to the beach.
I knew this would not be a pristine white sand beach and was aware it was a dog-friendly beach but didn't expect the large amount of dog feces. You really need to watch where you walk. Some people were there with their dogs, some leashed, most not. I love dogs but didn't appreciate aggressive dogs being loose.
We went there to beach comb and did find some nice Cape May Diamonds but it's not somewhere I'd spend the day. There are no restroom facilities, though there is a questionable port-a-pot in the parking lot.
There actually are two parking lots. One is directly at the end of the road. It's a very long trudge through deep soft sand to get to the beach. You get to the other one by making a right turn at the end of the road. The second lot has a shorter walk to the beach.
We'll stick to the Lighthouse Beach for our visits.

This is my favorite beach on all of Cape Island. It's on the Delaware Bay, just north of Sunset Beach. Aside from the beach, it has bird watching/hiking trails, all of which allows dogs year-'round. Not sure how far south you can walk before it becomes Sunset Beach, whihc only allows dogs during some months, but you can walk all the way north to the jetty at the canal to watch the Cape May-Lewes ferries come and go. It's also a great place to go photograph sunsets, if you want, because it never gets anywhere near as crowded as Sunset Beach, but faces the same direction.

This is a dog friendly beach so that is the number one reason for us. It is a walk through this trail and we had to carry our pup due to hot sand. There were many horseshoe crabs on the beach. I prefer a real beach in terms of the waves. We are limited due to having our dog as to where we can actually go so this a great alternative. We went to Sunset beach and Higbee beach actually joins it close to the Sunset grill where you can grab a bite to eat. The stones are amazing on the beach and it would seem looking for the cape may glass is a hobby for most people. It wasn't a place I felt going into the water. Not like the ocean with waves but overall I enjoy it very much.
