One of the best library in Newark area & has a huge collection of books for all ages.
Recently, they have changed their policies. Please check with the receptionist for any queries.

I just went here today, and in addition to reading many kinds of books, this library also helps those who need help in filing their taxes, using the computers for different--especially for job seeking. One can also look at special exhibits on two floors; today the special exhibits covered WWI and Newark's role in that war and pictures that a local photographer took of everyday people in different neighborhoods in Newark. The building itself is majestic, and I noticed the stained glass central ceiling and a mural on one of the walls depicting a pastel painting of youths dipping into the pool of knowledge. Did you know that this place is also where the very first all Star Trek convention took place? It was, and it took place for a day on March 1, 1969.

I visited this library to do some research for my book . It was black history month and the exhibits were valuable . What really attracted me was the old architecture of the building and it's modern day technology use . Staff very helpful .

The Newark Public Library is a bit of a classic Newark experience. The building has the exquisite touches of a bygone era, with lovely architecture, murals, atrium and vaulted ceilings. Exhibit cases around the atrium on each floor feature Afro-American figures in literature and poetry as well as the settlement history of New Jersey. It appears that most of the investment in the building has gone into public internet facilities. I was more interested in the book collections, which unfortunately have been sadly neglected. This proved to be a bit of a mixed blessing. The book section appears to have been virtually untouched in decades, but digging a bit deeper, one realises that there is a an incredible wealth of books in the collection. I lament the dumbing down of many public libraries where collections are streamlined to only the most popular or contemporary books. I dread to think what would happen if they did decide to "upgrade" the collection at the Newark Public Library. I suspect many of the gems would end up in the rubbish bin and we would be left with modern shelving and a streamlined collection. This is one institution that may have actually benefited from underinvestment. It would be nice to see more investment in such a classic building, but please recognise the gem that it is.

There is a vast amount of knowledge in this building, as with all libraries. BUT if you want a vast amount of in depth history about ANYTHING in the city, you can find it here.

A valuable resource especially for the history of Newark and African American History. The interior is embellished with beautiful wall decor in a space that is ample, quiet and conducive to reading. Speeches and exhibits are frequent at this site.

I was advised to start at the third floor, with the history of Newark, and then worked my way down, finishing with the new displays in the James Brown African American history room. Lovely library building itself, beautiful stained glass ceiling, large wall mural, and helpful staff.

Majority of the staff do not respect the fact that it is a liibrary and people are trying to read and study. I aware that the temperature inside the building exceeds that of the outside, I believe it to be common knowledge at this time of the year. As for the screaming children, which are allowed to run riot, could nothing be done to turn down the volume a little? I am aware that the bliss of a silent library is something only to be desired in a public library but I believe shouting across the library to a collegue is unnecessary. I must admit that the kind and courteous man who was working whilst I was holding my head in dispair did attempt to quieten the racket the unruly children were making but alas seemed ignorant to there chasing each other around five minutes later. I am aware children will be children, but it is a library and should be respected. That message should be one that is also presented to the staff also (especially the desk staff).
Otherwise a lovely setting.

I visited this in 2013 and found the older books of interest. The staff were very helpful about letting me fax something that I needed for my journey home.

This is an true hidden gem of the City of Newark. Let's start with the The Ballantine House, a restored home from the Victorian Era. It is beautifully maintained and actually allows a walk-through.
Next, the Dreyfuss Planetarium provides amazing shows daily and is connected with the Victoria Hall of Science which is a great collection.
Another Dreyfuss find is the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden, located behind the museum, it is decent size and a good walk.
The rest of the museum is best described as a mini Natural History museum ... you can spend at least 2 to 3 hours enjoying the exhibits. It is worth the price of admission.
