Nothing quite like this neighborhood in the region. I recently returned from Lisbon and walking around the Ironbound, you could think you were in Portugal - the blue and white tiles, the little egg tart pastries, even a store selling things made from cork - shoes, bags etc. I ate in three different restaurants and I am sorry to say, however, that at least in my limited experience, the food here is not as good as it is in Portugal. Maybe I hit the wrong spots? I'd be willing to keep exploring because it is so much fun and the ambience feels authentic. More interesting to me than the restaurants are the little shops, including food stores that sell all kinds of great products - coffee, sardines, etc. - and excellent bakeries. Sadly I was unable to find any spots to hear fado music, my favorite thing about Portugal. but it's still a great place to spend a couple of hours wandering around and having a coffee or a glass of wine. You can walk here from the train station - it's perfectly safe at least in daylight.

If you're a tourist this is not the place you really want to be. The ironbound is a mostly residential neighborhood in Newark. This is one of the safer areas of Newark but if you're not familiar with this city, this is still a rough area. That being said this is home to the most authentic Portuguese food in New Jersey. This is not a charming town for sight-seeing. Find your restaurant (preferably one with a parking lot), enjoy a delicious meal and go!

This is a vibrant neighborhood with a large Portugese, Brazilian, Spanish and latin american population. It is right next to Newark Penn station so getting there is easy. The shops are full of interesting things, the restaurants are popular with locals as well as out-of-towners, and it is all very walkable. There are a lot of older industrial buildings at the edges of the neighborhood, and they arre rapidly being re-imagined with interesting new artisinal businesses. A must see!

If you like Portuguese food and the entire experience this is the place to go. Great restaurants, bars and shops abound. Fairly safe once you get here. Lot's of PD patrols.

The architecture and cuisine of this section of the state, not to mention the bakeries. Is some of the best experiences of Newark.

Nice place to eat and spend money with great foods. Coimbra restaurant its the best one. The plates are so big and the food was great. Please, dont go Boi na Brasa Grill and Delicia de Minas. We had problems with the both one, like rice and mayonese. Go to Fernandes Steak house! Only Portuguese restaurants

Fantastic neighborhood, safe and colorful. The Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish folks have established a wonderful scene filled with terrific restaurants. One is better than the other. Some folks also call this area 'Down Neck' and I am not sure of the exact distinction. We often make the hour ride to go there. We love Iberia, and Forno's, but all are good.

If you love the vibe of downtown New York and the food it has then you would love the Ironbound.
Drive down Ferry street and get some authentic Portuguese/ Brazillian food. Go to Santos Florist in Wilson street and Niagra street and get a great deal on flowers that your girlfriend will be proud to showoff. Go to Chestnut street and watch a little league game. I can go on and on.. but you might just steal this gen away from me.

Like someone said, this was truly a foodie heaven. Lots of Central America-stylized restaurants here, and their menus were great. The local culture here also had some good vibes. You can check out Adega Grill here, that was fantastic!
