We were asked by 3 beggars for money in an elapsed time of about 40 mins while waiting for our train. Keep both eyes and ears OPEN at all times as there are a lot of vagrants just waiting to catch you unaware. While traveling with my daughter, we had the idea to bring a panic alarm that can go up to 30 decibels if we got into trouble. It’s an effective yet legal thing to board a train with. I highly recommend getting one if going to this train station. Even though there is security present, they are sometimes to busy talking to each other to care or enforce designated waiting areas for paying Amtrak customers! Be firm with these poor people and give them a firm NO, and make sure you have both hands on the panic alarm just in case. Since we were staying at the Hilton just through the station to the skywalk, we didn’t have to even go outside the station, (thank god). The most helpful person there was actually another passenger that helped us get safely from the train to where we were going as Amtrak employees and security around the station were all less than useless. Check out schematics of the skywalk area if you have to go anywhere around the station as it is a very useful and SAFE passage.

Perfect for transportation but terrible for stuff like dirty pee and trash filled elevators. From the time you walk in the door there are homeless people sleeping in the doorway and blocking steps. I’m a YouTube blogger who was shooting videos from my camera and a man threatened me to stop filming or else. This was one of many vagrants and panhandlers throughout the building. The stench on the elevators was unbearable and had trash on them. New people need to step in and take over this place. Perfect for transportation, horrible for the vagrant problems.

Used this station when we stayed in the doubletree hotel. Lots of platforms and tracks so do your homework before you get here. Senior is $2.45 single or $4.90 return . Adult $5.25 single or $10.50 return.

I use to go to Penn Station every day at one time when I worked in Newark. I went yesterday and the station has taken a 360. There are not any people hanging out in station. The station looks very clean. I hope they keep it this way.

Can you stay on the same PATH train from Newark to NY World Trade Center. If not how many times do you have to change trains?
Thanks R Elkins

I am writing this as a warning to other travelers, especially transit passengers using Newark Penn station to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) using track 4.
This happened to me on 5th April 2019. On the way back from Philadelphia to EWR to take my flight to Stockholm, I have taken the Amtrak train till Newark Penn station and then taken the NJ transit train from there to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) from track 4. Since it was slightly raining outside, I have decided to sit on one of the benches inside, after a while a lady (African origin) came and sat next to me and she was extremely polite and asked me how am I feeling. To make it short within the next 20 minutes, she has grabbed my purse from the right side pant pocket and walked away just before my train arrived!! I didn't had much money in the purse, but they have taken the credit cards and driving license along with the purse. According to me, she was not only the person involved in this. There were 3 other people, one young white girl who sat across us, another couple who sat diagonally opposite to us (South American origin) who were making all kind of distraction by talking and laughing loud while the lady sat next to me extracting my purse.
Even though I didn't lost much money and the cards are blocked immediately, it was such a nuisance to re-order everything. So be careful if you are transiting through Newark Penn Station.

The worst train station around. It's so filthy and smells like piss everywhere. There are homeless people sleeping in benches or walking around haggling. The train platforms are so dark and Erie feeling that I wouldn't want to be caught in there alone with all of the homeless people walking around. I honestly didn't feel safe at all and next time I will go the extra distance to go out of another train station. I can't believe how much of nasty place that is. Newark already has a bad reputation, don't make someone first time to newark be the train station as their first expoerence because of Newark didn't already feel unsafe and dirty, it sure did now to someone passing through.

We just used Newark Penn to get to Manhattan and it was quite easy. 20 minute ride for 10 dollars round trip.

City centre, or downtown they call here in America, every one has same problems. Obviously evident as well in this train station like shabby looking people who live out in the open that harass train travelers.

We had to spend a few hours here waiting for our train after getting off a cruise ship in Bayonne, NJ. It was horrible. Lots of homeless people, urine all over the floor in the bathrooms... we decided to get lunch at McDonald's in the station to help pass the time and there were people digging through the trash looking for food in the restaurant. Won't be traveling through that stations again anytime soon.

What is the best way to get to cruise port on a Sunday from Amtrak Newark Penn station. Also were would I pick up my luggage if it is checked on a train coming up on previous day. Thanks.
Written June 6, 2019
I'd say an Uber or a taxi to get to the Port. You can check with Amtrak when you board the train about picking up your luggage.

Newark Penn Station is a train station that is active all day long. There is not much to see here unless you like the Art Deco architecture on the building. It is a busy place. Also the restaurants and stores here are not very exciting. They are geared towards commuters.
If you want to see interesting things in Newark, NJ, visit the Newark Museum and the Newark Conservatory. The New Jersey Historical Society and the PAC are downtown as well. Military Park is interesting as well.

Hi, so I have a concert that I'm going to be attending on May 18th at the Metlife Stadium and I was just wondering...are there any trains in Newark Penn Station that go directly to the stadium or would I have to transfer between stops?
Written March 19, 2019
You'll have to transfer you might want to look at the schedule and see if Secaucus works I know that when football games are scheduled there is a train to Met Life

I am arriving from paris late on December
31 I am then travelling to Norfolk, the thought of drinking almost 7 hrs after a long flight is not what I look forward too. Can i take a train to penn station and catch a train to norfolk in the wee hours of the morning? Is it pretty simple
Written November 30, 2018
First questions I have for you is are you flying into Newark Airport? If so, take one of the shuttle buses to Penn Station or a cab or Uber it.
Before you arrive in the States, Google Amtrak and look at the schedule Norfolk. Is that Virginia or Connecticut? You better know what state you are going to first and look up that route.
Once in Penn Station you can buy a ticket at the counter in the main room or by machine. I am not sure the times or routes you need to take but this can all be checked on the Amtrak website. I am not sure how late the trains run but I know it is not all night. There is a nice Hilton Hotel right next to Penn Station if you need it and can walk across the street if you need a rest.
Have a good trip!

We are planning on spending 3 or 4 days in NYC
Is it possible to park at Penn Station and take the train into NYC?
Is this a better (read, cheaper) way than paying to park in NYC?
Written November 11, 2018
Parking in New York is brutal. I would Uber when possible or take the train which gives you a little more freedom. The train wasn't all that expensive.
Or if you are staying over night, stay at the hotel and park your vehicle there as a hotel guest.
Safe travels.

Hi,
How do I transfer at Newark Penn Station from PATH to a Trenton bound NJ Transit train?
Thanks!
Written November 9, 2018
When you get to the station there is an information booth or you can ask at the ticket window there are maps near them.
