Excellent museum for Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art
May 2019 • Friends
A unique collection of Russian and Societ Nonconformist Art seen nowhere else in the United States. we visited on a rainy Sunday but were enthralled with the depth of this permanent exhibit. The Zimmerli is also part of Rutgers University and is free. There are also soke very nice Amierica paitingins which include a few Hudson River School and some Tiffany lamps. Highly recommend a visit.

Visited for the Tuesday After Hours
Sep 2018 • Couples
This Museum has a great collection. They do an "After Hours" on the first Tuesday every month I believe w/ a jazz band, free refreshments and a tour. It makes for a wonderful evening out.

worth a detour
Jun 2018 • Friends
I love the surprises and hidden gems in the art museums that are not on the beaten track. This is the case with the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. It’s strong points are the collection of Russian and subversive art from the Soviet period, the collection of French Japonismes and now the temporary exhibitions with French and Mexican lithographs. The George Segal room in the American Art section is also valuable, There are no masterpieces or art of major masters, but there is a lot of interesting art to see. The internal rooms organization of the building is a little complicated, but the orientation sheet helps. Admission Free which is nice. Worth a detour.

Nice Free Museum
Apr 2018 • Family
We only spent about an hour, not long enough to see the entire museum. But, since it was free, we didn't worry about entering an hour before closing. They have a lot of Russian art. I would say I learned a lot about the rise of Communist propaganda.

Very nice paintings
May 2017 • Family
The paintings here are very nice. I love to look at them every time I come here. The floors in the place are always clean. It has never been dirty when I came. One problem. The staff. Of course, in any museum, people should never touch anything. I accidentally almost slipped, and I lightly touched the painting to stop me. One of the staff workers, hisses at me to not touch the paintings. I apologize and he walks away. On my way up from the museum, I look at a painting, and the lady immediately tells me not to touch the painting, even though I did not touch anything, with a strong attitude. The most someone should stay here is two hours, I would say, Its a decent sized museum for that size of people. Other than that, a nice museum, with rude staff,

Parking is a Challenge, But . . .
Dec 2017 • Couples
. . . Your effort is rewarded because the Zimmerli is a wonderful university-based museum. So, don't be deterred by the difficulty of getting a nearby place to park or by the exterior of the building which gives the impression that it is a small museum. This is a very high quality museum with some very extensive exhibits.

We came specifically for the Social Photography exhibit and were blown away by the extent and quality of the photos. I would call it advocacy photojournalism with a decidedly left leaning bent. It covered the early 20th century poverty on New York's lower East side up to and including the current Black Lives Matter period. It was made all the more interesting by the inclusion of photos from various European countries, especially Russia. The accompanying explanations were very helpful.

We made a commitment to return to see the Russian Revolution exhibition that looked very good.

Yes, the museum is free but you may make a donation and we did. The deserve it. It's a wonderful place.
