I stopped by earlier today to get outside and enjoy the weather; such a nice space to soak in the trees and gardens; very clean and well kept. It’s the perfect place to observe lovely gardens, catch some sun or shade and reflect. Would definitely return or recommend

After several visits to Van Vleck House & Gardens, I am convinced that we are one of the most fortunate towns to have such historical beauty right in our backyards! A spot of serenity and beauty which offers a lovely escape from our daily hustle and bustle. A delightful and extensive collection of indigenous plants and trees. Perfectly wonderful!

Very pretty gardens and carriage house in Montclair. You can picnic on their lovely lawn or enjoy a stroll if you're in the area.

The gardens are lovely and pleasant for a nice walk around. The different plants are labeled. Calling it 'house and gardens' implies both are available to tour. However, the house is closed to the public...disappointing.

Montclair is blessed to have such a treasure of Irises. One never tires of the colors and beauty in the gardens.

This horticultural treasure in Montclair is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. Admission is free. The beauty and serenity it affords is priceless. The gardens are situated around major structures. The 140 year old Italianate Van Vleck house which was originally owned by three generations of Van Vleck's before the Montclair Foundation assumed control of the 5.8 acre property in 1993. The Carriage House has interpretive and educational programs for both adults, children and families.. Their website contains all the information needed for these available programs. The property is divided by the formal azalea walk which display unique rhododendrons and azalea which the Van Vleck's developed through hybridization. A perennial, woodland, rock, butterfly, water and mother's garden are other featured gardens. There are many placques to read for information about the estate and plants. There is ample parking and the Montclair museum and Kip's castle are less than a mile away.

Lovely flowers, shrubs and trees. In the springtime the huge, wisteria is an incredible sight to see. Peaceful place to wander, read a book, picnic and meditate. A place for all to enjoy.

I come here all the time, especially if I have some free time on a weekday. It's beautiful and unbelievably peaceful! On occassion, there are lectures, concerts, etc. which require an attendance fee but otherwise roaming the grounds is free and 365 days a year until dusk. I adore this neighborhood gem and what it gives the community

Well-maintained, super clean and super-informative!.
We loved the cell phone info stops along the pathways. A wonderful place to stroll post-Sunday brunch year round.
These gardens depend on their members.
We will be supporting this non-profit.

New Jersey was often stereotyped as a State full of oil refineries and other industries. However, local residents also know their State as the Garden State for many good reasons. This surely is one of them. The property is located in the posh suburb of Upper Montclair where houses could run in the millions. It's a six acre property with a U-shaped Italianate Villa belonging to the Van Vleck family before it was gifted to the non profit Montclair Foundation, which provides public access to the garden year round.

The house itself is nice and imposing but it is not the masterpiece, the garden is. The garden is a horticultural marvel. You will encounter large and mature hardwoods and a variety of pines interspersed among flower beds and shrubs of all kind. Most trees and shrubs are labeled for your personal education. Lovely walking trails abound and are dotted with wooden benches to sit, relax and enjoy the scenery and many songbirds. You go here to unwind and reflect, to hold hand with your lover, to learn about the therapeutic value of garden when it's well done, and of course to learn how to recognize plant species and build garden. A visit is recommended to all who live or visit Northern Jersey and NYC, it will be well worth your time. The main house is available for rental for events (excluding weddings) by non profit organizations. Parking available on site and surrounding streets.
