We had been to the Schiff Nature Preserve years ago during the summer months, so our visit in April was different looking. They were still preforming spring clean up. Many of the plants, bushes, and trees in the meadow and along the trail were just starting to bloom. We enjoyed the fresh air and sunny day during our hike through the great meadow and up to lookout point and back.

A former Boy Scout national training center, Schiff is now a Natural Land Trust supported by membership and donations. Over 6.5 miles of trails through various habitats are open to the public. Some buildings are still standing from the Boy Scout days making their discovery an extra fun part of the hikes. Guided hikes and classes are offered too.

One of the best places in New Jersey to go for a walk. Meandering trails, lots of birds and beautiful foliage. Especially nice in Autumn!

Recently my wife and I took the dog for a lovely hike on several of the tails in the Schiff Nature Preserve. Before starting we visited the Nature Center and picked up a map and asked if dogs were allowed. Pets must be leashed at all times which works for us. Since it was going to be a hot day we began our hike in the morning and only went to the Great Meadow to see the wild flowers and up to Lookout Point in the wooded area. Next time I would like come back when it’s cooler and check out the Revolutionary War Encampment and Marker area, and in the winter to get a better view from Lookout Point.

This is a former Boy Scout camp which has been converted to a nature preserve. There is a small nature center and a number of color coded hiking trails. We did part of the blue trail which is an old road through the woods and the white meadow loop. In June there were a number of wildflowers in bloom and we saw squirrels, chipmunks, birds, butterflies and bees while we walked. The preserve is on a mountainside so the trails do have a grade to them.
