This museum is the lovingly restored home of a talented artist. There is also a surprise rotating art exhibition upstairs. The people who volunteer here are just wonderful and they love what they do. Well worth the admission cost.

John Peto specialized in "fool the eye" paintings. He moved to the Methodist Camp Meeting town of Island Heights in the late 19th century where he continued to paint (in relative obscurity). After he died relatively young, 54, of kidney disease his wife and daughter maintained the house as a bed and breakfast.
By 2000, the Peto home had fallen into a terrible state of disrepair. However, it has been restored to its original glory.
It is open for viewing (by docent tour) on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Admission of $10. is just a small donation to preserve this treasure. While touring the house you will see a special exhibit in the upstairs bedrooms (changing a few times a year).
Docents are very knowledgeable and it is a treat to see Peto's original things where he actually lived over 100 years ago.

This is the original studio and dwelling for John F. Peto, a realist painter in the trompe l'oeil style. It was very interesting seeing how he worked and lived, however there were very few original representative works of his in the house, which was a disappointment. There was an exhibition of another fine artist Gary Erbe who also paints super-realistic collages and they were amazing!
