This is now an office building1

I went with 5 photography friends, hoping to explore the grounds, the castle and the statues. There is one statue in the entrance way. The castle is now an office building! There are no grounds or other statues to explore.
We were very disappointed!!

This castle actually has a lot of memories for me. It was built by one the Johnson's - of the Johnson & Johnson fame. Mr. Johnson's daughter married Mr. Crockett ( descendant of Davy Crockett ). Back in the 1980's I spent time with Mr. Crockett in the castle. I rehabilitated wildlife and Mr. Crockett let me use his barn to release by raccoons. He also let my friend Henry host a huge outdoor bar-b-q once a year. We had some good times there.
The smaller house was for either his personal caretaker or his driver. The entrance archway was also a small home for the property caretaker . The land at that time was all woods and fields. It's hardly recognizable anymore except for the 2 buildings. Mr. Crockett gave the land and his house to a nursing home with a life estate. I guess the nursing home sold most of the land because now there are luxury apartments on just about every square inch. It's kind of sad. This was once a pristine oasis with a huge barn and wooded trails and now it's concrete and steel. Still worth a detour off River Rd. just to check out the architecture.

Cool old castle

Merriwold is an old castle that has a playful garden with period appropriate statues. It's off a busy street, tucked up on top of a hill overlooking the park.

Who knew there's a castle in Highland Park!

This old castle up on the hill was originally built for Seward Johnson, Sr of the Johnson and Johnson company in 1926. It now serves as offices. The outside of the building is beautiful and the courtyard at the entrance contains a sculpture of a man and his dog sitting on a bench reading the newspaper. The sculpture, by Seward Johnson, Jr, is entitled "On Top of the News". The main entrance to the castle, on River Road\, which now serves as the entrance to an assisted living faciity, is also architecturally interesting.
