Interesting but not much to it...

I love seeing ANY covered bridge - and this one is still worth a visit if you’re in the area - there are so many bridges to see! But compared to the others in the area, I found this one to be a tad underwhelming.

It was built in 2001 and is a reconstruction of the original 1862 bridge. There’s not much room to park on the side of the road for pictures and there isn’t much else going on in the area. There is a cute and funny sign on the bridge that discloses a $5 fine for driving faster than a “walk” pace lol!

Must see. Great history. Nice back roads for a great road trip. Be careful near road. People do travel fast even though speed limit over bridge is 5 miles per hour

SLATE COVERED BRIDGE
Mar 2019 • Couples
Touring New Hampshire, we tried to revisit a lot of covered bridges, waterfalls, and other sights. Slate Covered Bridge is .9 miles up Westport Village Road which runs of route 10 northbound. There is a parking lot and picnic area. A lot of the bridges have a brown sign indicating the bridge number. Watch for the signs. This is number 4 in the New Hampshire system. Most of the bridges are one lane--don't rush to cross.

Just love covered bridges. Usually plan a trip to see as many as I can in a day. Mark them on my map. There certainly a symbol of New England.

Classic New England covered bridge. Set in a quaint New England Town. Great photo opportunity. Close to three other unique covered bridges.

Live the covered bridges

The Greater Swanzey area has a number of covered bridges that have been well taken care of, handle traffic albeit single Lane traffic but you can still drive across them. I recommend stopping at one or two since many of these are located near Old Mills or a bend in the river where the moment silence after all the traffic is past as well worth the extra few minutes out of your day

Rebuilt after a Disastrous Fire

The original Slate Covered Bridge dates to 1862 and was named after a local family. Unfortunately, this magnificent bridge measuring 122 feet long was destroyed by arson in 1993. The present bridge was rebuilt in 2001. Kudos to the locals for rebuilding and preserving the history of Swanzy, NH.

This bridge is only one of six covered bridges that cross the Ashuelot River and lie within a few miles of each other. Friends and I made a point of visiting the bridges while staying in New Hampshire a few weeks ago. Bridges are beautiful - all! Enjoy.

Beautiful bridge, just one in the loop. Plan to spend time to photograph and explore. Each bridge is very different from the others

There are great colors on this brigdge. They have kept it up well. Sometimes you can get a good reflection in the water around it.
