About
The legendary Avenue Victor Hugo Books has re-opened in a post-and-beam barn 10 minutes from the UNH campus in Durham. For nearly 30 years, Avenue Victor Hugo was a fixture of Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay, the store at one time holding over a quarter-million magazines and 150,000 used books. Awarded “Best Used Bookstore” multiple times by Boston Magazine, the store was a favorite of Boston-area authors and college students alike. During its years on Newbury Street, Avenue Victor Hugo also played host to Fiction, Galileo, and Galaxy magazines, all published by McCaffrey. In 2004 the store was forced to close due to high rents. 14 years later, in 2018, the shop reopened in Lee, New Hampshire. This rebirth has been celebrated by The Boston Globe, WMUR's New Hampshire Chronicle, The New Hampshire Union Leader, NHPR's Morning Edition, Foster's Daily Democrat, and WGBH's Greater Boston. AVH specializes in fiction and history but carries a select of all genres.

I’d been by the big old historic red R.C. Durgin Barn (circa 1750) many times before but never really paid attention to the sign out front; but, on my most-recent trip to Lee, I read the sign and was surprised to see the name Avenue Victor Hugo Books. I remembered it from Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay some years ago.

Inside, I found the owner very cordial. He was easy to talk to. He is the quintessential bookshop owner.

I learned that he was in fact the owner of the former Boston book shop which he closed down when the rent there became unreasonably high.

He and his wife moved up from Boston and were living right next door at their daughter’s house.

He said he was doing a lot of online business in New Hampshire because his catalog of books was available online; and, he was only a short drive away from the University of New Hampshire campus.

As I browsed the shelves, violin music by Joshua Bell was streaming from his computer. Joshua Bell, whom I’ve met in person, is my favorite contemporary classical violinist. So, the music enhanced my visit.

I found an excellent wide selection of books in every genre. I browsed some of the Fiction and Non-Fiction/History sections.

This first-rate bookshop is well off the beaten path, so it is truly a hidden gem.

I rate Avenue Victor Hugo Books and the owner at 5.0 and highly recommend to anyone interested in browsing bookstores.

The atmospheric barn is the perfect locale for the treasure trove of books found at this delightful bookshop. The proprietor was extremely helpful and knowledgeable as I searched the shelves for, and eventually located, the very book I sought. I spent a happy hour reading through other volumes that caught my eye and eventually approached the register with an armload of books. Much to my delight, the bill was so reasonable that I was able to purchase the entire stack. I highly recommend this shop for all who love books and will be returning again soon!

Great curated selection of used books. The sections are well labeled. The man behind the counter - part of the husband-wife owner team? - was a pleasure to talk to.

In an age where more people rely on stranger's book knowledge on Amazon before making a pick, it was great to come to AVH in Lee, NH. Not only do you get to browse in a beautiful old barn, you also get to have your own search engine (Vince) guide you in your quest for that next great read. The store has a great location that's close to downtown Newmarket, UNH, and Flagg Hill. I'll be back for more!
