About Northeast Fly Fishing School
In the Northeast Fly Fishing School you will not only learn how to fly cast, but where and when to cast. You will learn how to identify what trout eat, how to select flies that match trout food and how to present the fly in a natural way on a trout stream, not just a casting pond. We teach you how to "read the water" and learn where trout hold in a stream, how to approach them and how to cast to where they will eat your fly. In the classroom, at the casting pond and on a local stream - you will get personal fly fishing instruction and not be in a large class. We give you personal attention that quickly lets you be effective. Don't be "short-changed" by schools that are only a few hours or a day-long. You receive a full day of classroom and casting instruction AND a half-day on-the-river fishing instruction. Your instructors are licensed, insured fly fishing guides with years of experience. In addition to the fly fishing school, they are available for personal guided fly fishing trips in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

A great day on the Merrimack River in Concord, NH. Expert (and patient) instruction from Dave, Gerry, and Jim. Had fun and got a thorough introduction to fly fishing. Thank you Northeast Fly Fishing School.

I had the experience of taking the NE Fly Fishing School with David and Gerry last weekend. The class was incredible. It was a full-day (8:30-4) of instruction from fly casting, fly selection, knots, gear, techniques (dry flies, streamers, nymphs). We started with pond/lake fishing and then finished off with fishing in a river. It was also a great day of fishing. Each of us in the class caught about 6 Brook Trout. I highly recommend taking this class.

Having minimal prior fly fishing experience, I had a fantastic experience with Dave and Jim on the river. These guys know their stuff, from fishing know-how to teaching it. They covered a lot of material in a day - casting techniques and practice, stripping and mending, how to fish with streamers, dry flies, and nymphs, how to find and approach the fish, how to manage your time on the water, landing a fish, where to fish, and more. I feel much more knowledgeable and ready to apply their lessons on my own with more confidence. I ended the day with great excitement and enthusiasm for the sport.

I have modest experience fly fishing and realized pretty quickly how much I had to learn. These are just great explainers of the issues - water levels, temps, flies, methods, gear, casting, etc. Really clarified some things for me and helped me get past some biases I had (like, only fish in the early morning or late afternoon!). Never really "got" the importance of nymph vs. bloomer vs dry fly fishing, and now I do! Finally, I would say I thought I could cast, strip, mend and all that. Boy did they make me much better with some logical and by-example explanation.

The 1 day beginner school is a challenge for the staff to get all the highlights in but is a great introduction. Dave, Gerry and Dan are very knowledgeable and each bring their own skills. At completion, I felt confident that I could go out and recognize what I was doing wrong. Gerry’s videos are very informative. NFFS should send links upon registration to give ample time for viewing, instead of waiting until a week before course. They are only available on YouTube so not downloadable. So, if you’re not in internet connected area, they are unavailable. And, Gerry’s videos are information packed so worth watching more than once. Instructor to student ratio was great.
