It's hard to capture the beauty of the sunset ferry ride between Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, North Carolina in just one photo. The best time to take this ferry adventure is on Saturdays and Sundays during their summer schedule. If you arrive week days between...More

The ferry system is very efficient and they do a great job of getting you on and off the ferry. It is a delightful ride from Hatteras to Okracoke Island. And it never gets old, no matter how many times you go.

There's often a wait at the Hatteras end - with rest rooms and shops to entertain you while you wait. Not sure about the other end - doesn't seem to be much there, but we never had to wait, since we usually return in mid-afternoon....More

Outstanding experience compared to where we come from in the Northeast where you have to pay and arm and a leg for a 20 minute ferry ride to the nearest island. The employees here are so friendly and helpful. We took the ferry from Hatteras...More

Travelled Cedar Island to Ocracoke then to Hatteras Island in August 2018. Such a great, easy experience. Highly recommend. Ocracoke looked like a cool wee town and if I returned would get off ferry and stay there a while.

The Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry is a free service provided by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. It carries both cars and walk-on passengers, leaving on a regular schedule. In order to avoid sandbars, the ferry has to travel a circuitous route out into Pamlico...More

We wanted to visit Ocracoke Island, so the only way to get there is by boat. We were delighted to find that the state of North Carolina actually runs ferry’s out to it and back at absolutely no cost. They load and unload vehicles very...More

North Carolina ferry system is very reliable and efficient. We took two different ferries the same day, both were on time.

We rode the ferry from Hatteras in the morning and back to Hatteras in the afternoon and didn’t have more than a 15 minute wait either way. However that was in early May. There was more than one ferry running. They run more... More

I actually counted the cars on the ferry trips we took. It seems that 20 - 25 was the number. I also think weight comes into play as one time there was room for more cars and they didn't allow them to board.
