About
KITE HATTERAS offers the most efficient form of teaching on the East Coast. Ty Luckett’s custom kite boat offers safe and dry comfort as well as launching from the boat with all the equipment you need for any conditions. You will be on the water quickly with kites that are already rigged and a compressor to inflate them. More time for you to learn! Kite Hatteras specializes in PERSONAL ATTENTION Our camps have no more than 2 students (unless requested for a family or friends) With a certified boat captain, the latest Cabrinha kites and equipment and a boat that is specifically designed for use as a kite boarding instruction tool, Kite Hatteras offers a lesson program that is unlike any other. Kite Hatteras is the only company that offers "The Tower”, which provides instruction even in no wind conditions! Focusing entirely on board skills, "The Tower" pulls you out of the water at a 45 degree angle just as the kite will - allowing you to become comfortable with edging and proper foot pressure which are necessities for kiteboarding success. ABOUT TY Ty has been involved in the USA kitesurfing industry since its inception. Long before most of us had ever heard of kitesurfing, he mastered this new and exciting sport in April of 1998. He also has over twenty years of windsurfing experience. Ty was one of the first kiteboarding instructors in the country. While sponsored by "F-One Kites", he began "Grab High", a kiteboarding school based in Hatteras. For years, he taught lessons all over the USA. Ty was the head instructor at Kiteboarding Hatteras, a flight instructor with a commercial pilot's license and is a sponsored rider for Cabrinha. Ty has been featured in videos like "Air Sickness", "Pure North", "Pistol River Wave Bash", and "Kooks of Hazard." He continues to be one of most well respected local kitesurfers and continues to push himself to the next level. He offers top quality lessons with the highest level of professionalism and safety.

Spent 2 hours actually kiting instead of getting to the site, setting up, and recovering the board. We boated to a nice spot off shore, still shallow but away from the beach and other kiters. Kites were pre-rigged on the boat, the electric air pump made set up fast, the head sets made instruction easy (vs. some guy yelling at you from shore that you can't even hear) and the boat made upwind board recovery fast. Did more in 1 session as would normally get in 2 or 3 sessions. Well worth it.... Thanks Ty!

Kitesurfing lessons with Ty Luckett was a blast.
Day 1: board skills on his custom made boom off his boat. Easy and fun.
Day 2: kite skills from waist deep water.
Day 3: putting them together and kitesurfing.

Safety was stressed.
waist deep water with no one else within miles.
The helmet with in-ear comm-link make it easy to communicate with him in the boat and me in the water.

I would HIGHLY recommend.

There is instruction and then there is practice. Capt Lucket is a great instructor. He can just as easily instruct a person in their 50s or a teenager.

His board training set up on his boat is one of a kind . You have to see it to understand but it really helps to learn.

Boat is set up to teach with air compressor , cooler , plenty of seats, new boat and the board training system .

Easy 5 star.

I had been struggling with progressing any with transitions and within 15 mins, Ty had me going and mastering transitions in both directions. He had the best and most simple way to explain things to me and it clicked. We were lucky to have wind but before I got on the kite, I was able to practice board skills on his kite rite pole he created on his boat. SO INNOVATIVE! I was so impressed! I can’t wait to come back and go out with Ty. I made so much progress with him!

If you want to learn to kiteboard, but are nervous about trying, Ty is the person to work with. Further, if you want to learn most efficiently and effectively from a demonstrated expert then you are also at the right place.

I've spent 2 years and too much time and hadn't progressed to being a proficient kiteboarder. Boom - 4-5 hours later I'm doing it all, riding, transitions, riding upwind and did it in a safe and well controlled way.

Here is why:
1. Ty breaks the sport down to small pieces - explains them in a meaningful way and helps you put them together effectively.

2. Ty has invested heavily in his craft. He has a unique bar on his boat that allows the trainee to experience riding on the board in the water without having to worry about the kite. This is very important and is reflective of Ty's ingenuity with teaching and the sport overall.

3. Ty is a good communicator - he can piece it all together in a way that anyone can understand. He also uses helmet radios so when you are out there putting it all together Ty will be in your head helping you make minor adjustments that make all the difference. "bend your back knee" is super meaningful and I heard it half a dozen times before it became habit.

4. Pamlico Sound is waist deep almost everywhere - fall and stand up - makes learning easier and a little less intimidating.

Lastly, Ty is a great person. I dare you to not absolutely enjoy spending a day with this guy - you will learn a lot and feel like you made a lifelong friend. Don't even think of going anywhere else - Ty is the guy.

Ty never loses his enthusiasm for teaching kiteboarding. He taught me and subsequently taught my two kids. His classroom is Pamlico Sound where chest deep water provides the ideal venue for learning the sport. Ty has a great boat and always has the latest equipment for his students. If you're serious about learning the sport, you'll be thankful that you chose Kite Hatteras!

I took my first kiteboarding lesson in Tarifa, Spain. To make a long story short, it was a nightmare. I was paired with people with weights and abilities, my instructor had anger management issues, and we were learning on a beach with over 100 kites in the air (probably all learning as well).

Despite my initial experience, I eventually learned to kite several years later between my homespot in Michigan and a couple of trips to Hatteras. I called "Captain Ty" after a season of riding upwind. I wanted to learn how to jump and to learn how to do backrolls! I only wish I would have called him sooner!

Ty is able to cut your learning time in half (if not more) and save you a lot of pain (literally). He is patient, affirming, confident, and has all the right gear. I know kiteboarding is an expensive sport, but good lessons are worth their weight in GOLD. Ty will get you riding ASAP and save you a lot of anger and frustration. By the end of my two hour lesson, I was making BIG jumps and doing backrolls easily!

This past year my dad expressed an interest in picking up kiting. He had decent kite skills but had a hard time with water starts. I told him if he was serious about kiting he needed to sign up for a lesson with Ty. He did and also had a wonderful experience. He was so excited that he got in some really long rides in both directions- that was a huge confidence booster for my dad who was starting to get frustrated.

If you are a beginner, I highly recommend you take a private lesson with Ty as opposed to going with a group lesson at a school like I did in Tarifa. You will be safer and having fun sooner!

I've been struggling to learn kite boarding for years. I just couldn't get my board starts and people were telling me I wasn't pointing my board down wind enough. One lesson with Ty on his boat was all it took to get me up and riding. He identified problems I was having with the board and fixed them instantly. It allowed me to work on the board without worrying about the kite. That was KEY! Thanks so much Ty! I'd recommend this for anyone trying to learn. It helped so much.

Captain Ty was awesome! Took our group on a sunset boat cruise over the sound. Full moon rising on one side, while viewing amazing sunset on the other! Conveniently climbed aboard in Buxton across from Pop's! Would definitely recommend this trip!
