Besides the huge locomotive, the museum has a bunch of interesting information and images. It's not big, so it only takes a short amount of time to visit. A great way to take a look into Nevada's past. Highly recommendable.

This little place was run by passionate volunteers and we really enjoyed it. Beautifully restored engines, artifacts and personal accounts of town fires. Donations accepted, but no fee to enter.

This small museum has free admission. Donations are requested. It is located 1 block off main "C" street Virginia City. Inside is the restored Virginia and Truckee #18. This locomotive/tender is non operational. The boiler is too far-gone and would need overhaul before firing. Besides the locomotive, along side both sides of the exhibit are display cases with old cameras, old tools and telegrapher’s equipment. There are also old photos of the area. Also at the rear of the tender is an exhibit of the Chinese cemetery. Against the back wall are books about the area that are for sale. In the meeting room when I was there was an art exhibition "Panorama". So, if you do stop by please donate to help this location remain open. Only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The docent when I was there, Jeff, was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Less than what I expected (given the size of the building). However, it's also inexpensive. And you can see a wonderfully restored locomotive (Number 18, I named my rental car after it!) and some photographs/diagrams of the Comstock Lode and mining activities. The day I visited Virginia City had its 50th annual camel race, so the place was empty, I had it all to myself. If restored locomotives don't excite you (!) skip it, even if it's free.

Nice little museum. The staff was really helpful about what else to see in the area. Worth checking out if spending a day in Virginia City.

Beautiful cosmetic restoration (engine will not operate) of the 1870's 4-4-0 steam engine 'Dayton'. Some additional local information; operated by State of Nevada, in association with the Nevada RR Museum in Carson City.

A quick wander through the History Center is well worth the time it takes. It gives you a glimpse into a bit of the history of the town, and won't take a lot of time to enjoy!

would fun to see this small collection of historic artifacts. They have done a good job in this town to provide their history for all of us to enjoy. All the people were very friendly

I'm a model train builder. I was building a replica of this engine and use it for reference. This has been beautifully restored, although it does not run. Several interesting facts, and it's free. Just a short walking distance from the main drag of town.

Located just south of downtown and open on a semi regular basis, this small yet very informative museum is a must see.
The restored steam engine ( static display ) is a larger then life reminder of a bygone era.
Plenty of additional local history so take an hour or two and enjoy.
There is no admission fee, however, a donation is always very welcome.

Can I park my car there for the day as I tour the city on foot?
