We could only go about 20 miles per hour and it was 17 miles to drive to the end of the barely paved road, lots of potholes. The trip back was actually prettier with the sun on the rocks.

We live in Ivins City, Utah and to experience the Monument took three trips out. Hiking is great with wonderful views. Petroglyph sites were amazing. No crowds...The roads are a bit rough and I would suggest a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

This is wilderness few experience and thankfully so. The land is rugged, austere, yet filled with intriguing rock formations, water pockets, and a grand sense of space. There are no campsites, no ammenities - nothing but just about everything an adventurer seeks space, quiet, and...More

We had visited Gold Butte a few times before it was gazetted as a National Monument and we revisited it yesterday. Gold Butte was deemed worthy of monument designation for historical and cultural assets but also for environmental and conservation reasons. It is where the...More

We read an article about Gold Butte National Monument in a magazine in Mesquite, NV and thought it would be interesting to check it out. There is a paved road (very rough) for about the first 20 miles up to Whitney Pocket, after that the...More

Not aware of any paved roads going into this area, but most of the dirt ones I traveled on were in good condition. This area is great with very early or late light. See photos.

Wonderful off the beaten path place to explore. Trails and bathrooms are not always available. Pretty important to head out with a group like Friends of Gold Butte who offer hikes and tours on a regular basis. However, it is a gem with some amazing...More

Gold Butte NM is in a remote area of Nevada. There is a rough paved road as far as Whitney Pockets, an area with incredible pocketed rock formations in various colors. The dirt/stone/gravel roads after this are sometimes very rough. Do not attempt any of...More

Let me start by saying that I thought that it was a 5 star trip, even though I only gave it 4 stars. My wife found it to be overly hot (about 105 degrees with no shade). I did my homework before I came here...More

This place is miles from help or others. One should plan ahead to spend a nite or two in the event of a mishap and survival skills and "smarts" would be helpful in this area. Driving into Little Finland should not be done by a...More

As the above answer says, stay on main road. But I think you'll be frustrated. You'll see distant areas that you want to go to, but won't be able to.

Gold Butte is a large area of mostly unpopulated areas to hike in. Dogs should not be a problem. You should easily be able to find an area with no people around so the dogs can run freely.
