Not many companies open their doors to the extent that Zappos does, and it was interesting to see how they operate. There were some aspects I would have liked to have delved a bit deeper into, like the hiring process, how promotions are determined, and even employee relations practices in such a free-form environment. However, the tour itself was interesting and the guide was fun and helpful.

One other plus was the shuttle. They picked us up at our hotel and brought us back after the tour. Book that in advance if you need a ride.

Tip: Dress casually. I wore shorts, a casual shirt, and flip flops, and I fit right in.

At first, I was a passive visitor. My wife, being a business person read the book and wanted to see how this shoe middleman became so successful. I was curious too but I was a little skeptical. I was intrigued by the fact that the owner/creator woudn't sell his business until he was able to get Amazon to accept and keep the "Zappos Culture"(ZC). It was a nice tour and gave insight into the "ZC". I have visited other businesses, like google, twitter, sauce manufacturers and some seemed a little a little stranger/new age than classical business models. I don't think that they worry about the bottom line so much as they are concerned with employee satisfaction and compliance with the "culture". The employees seemed happy, but I was viewing them from a distance, not as an employee. You should go over the 10 core values which are specific to this business and not necessarily applicable to others. Afterwards, I encouraged my wife to create some core values for her own small business. I know they would be different from Zappos'. The only other institution that I am aware of with Core Values was the military, specifically the Air Force. There were only 3, but they were very good Core Values for the mission of military services and good character building.
Great visit particularly if you are interested in new business ethic.

We found this tour on TripAdvisor and thought we would give it a try. I have shopped Zappos but my husband didn't know what it was. The tour was great and our guide was so passionate about working for this company(thanks Ryo). It was very enjoyable. There were only 4 people in our group. My husband and I were lucky enough to do a Google tour in the past and there are a lot of similarities.
At the end of this tour you receive a hardcopy Culture Book.

If you are interested in corporate culture, how they are created, nurtured, and/or maintained; you will not be disappointed with this experience. I chose the extended your that included one-on-one time with leaders in the organization. It was expensive ($300+) but I would do it again. Full disclosure: my company paid for it, but got great return on investment with the ideas generated and having a newly inspired person/leader on staff, ready to engage others with innovation. The general tour alone is really inexpensive for the value, I would highly recommend it for anyone who works outside the home. The extended tour is probably only good for those truly interested in creating a culture for their organization. It's not so much a tour as it is a discussion, so be ready with questions if you are going that route.

There was about 7 us in our group in the tour. Our tour guide Christine was pleasant. She answered all the questions we asked and if she couldn't, she found someone who could. The employees there seemed very friendly, considering they had tour groups coming into their work space. Intersting company.

This tour was at the old city hall. The tour was fun, informative, and interesting. We were there during a western vendor event so the courtyard had vendors showing off shoes, free food for employees, music and a bull ride in the middle of the campus.

You can tell it's a fun work environment and they have a very unique culture.

Definitely worth going to, you have to make an appointment ahead of time. They will even pick you up if you don't have transportation.

The corporate tour was very interesting. Their work environment is truly unique and very weird. It's a similar type of feel as the Airbnb HQ in San Francisco. Surprisingly, the average age of their employees there in Vegas is something like late 30's or early 40's; I would have expected it to be mid-20's. I don't think I could ever work there, though - everything is very open. While that encourages people to move around and meet folks in other departments to foster the 'family environment' they're looking for, it also reduces the quiet space I need to do the kind of work I do. But for someone who is used to working with a lot of noise and activity around, it sure seems to be a great place. It's also within walking distance of the downtown casino area (Fremont Street) so you can combine two attractions with one cab ride. Actually, if you sign up in advance, the Zappos people will try to get you to and from the tour. Nice touch.

I posted a few photos. First off - this tour is at the new Zappos HQ in Downtown Las Vegas (the former city hall) not Henderson, NV - they moved over a year ago. This tour shows how "laid back" / yet professional this company treats their employees and customers. Top notch. Voted one of the top companies to work for.

We signed up online and arrived as scheduled. It is FREE. They can also arrange a free Zappos shuttle van to pick you up. Good info is provided about how a company should (and does) treat employees.

I know a few employees at this company and they love it. The tour is great if you've been to Las Vegas before and are looking for something different - and free!

The following is a long and detailed overview of my tour. If you don’t like spoilers, stop reading now.

I went on the Zappos Tour on a Monday at 11 a.m. I requested the tour three weeks in advance. I received an email acknowledging my request; however, I did not receive a confirmation for the tour until two days prior. My call and e-mail inquiring about the tour was not answered until 9 a.m. the morning of the tour. Since I have high expectations of Zappos' Customer Service, their waiting until the very last minute to confirm the tour is surprising.

When arriving in the parking garage, a security guard will ask for your first and last name. There is free and ample parking in the garage, with an elevator that leads to the courtyard of the building. At the time of my visit, there was an ornate UFO in the courtyard. The compound is split into three sections: 1) Metro Building, 2) Tower and 3) Annex. The Lobby is located in the Annex.

Upon arriving, guests need to sign into one of two computers to the left of the Check In Desk. Employees were busy talking to each other and did not acknowledge guest arrival and provided minimal direction. You receive a Guest Badge that is required for access to tour areas, and an adhesive badge with your name pre-printed on it.

There is a small room to the right of the Check In Desk that has a brief film of Zappos' history. Some freebies such as pins and plastic bracelets are located in the back of the room. The video ends with staff advising that sex is part of the job interview. As a Human Resources professional, I was surprised to hear this. The video cuts off at the sex part, and the tour guides come in and say this part is supposed to be funny and that the sex really doesn't happen.

Tour staff introduces themselves and does a mini question and answer session. They then do a roll call of all scheduled guests and account for everyone present. Tour guides (but they are called something else) then ask who needs a ride after the tour. The shuttle is free, though the word “free” is not mentioned. Several were going to the airport, going back to their hotel, or going to another location.

Our group was small (8 people) but the tour group was ready for many more people. I think the smaller group made it easier to access areas, hear more information, etc. We accessed the three different areas of the complex. You will get a peek at the café, see several kitchen areas on various floors, see the work stations of employees, and get an overall

For those concerned with accessibility, we used elevators the majority of the time with only one set of stairs (approximately 10 steps). The walking was not bad or tiring at all, so I believe that almost everyone, including children, can keep up with the pace.

The company culture and how employees are hired is discussed on the tour. You will also see various departments and receive an explanation of what they do.

At the end of the tour, you will return to tour area. Not sure why, but some visitors remain for a Q & A Session. There is a Library area with books on sale for $10 each. Books for sale include: Drive, Tribal Leadership, Crush It, Fish, and Finding Your Element. Also, there is a Wells Fargo ATM Machine in the Library area. All visitors receive a free copy of the Culture Book as a keepsake. Be sure to put your name tag on “Lucille Ball” – you’ll get the story on this from your tour guide.

This is a free tour that everyone should do – both longtime Las Vegas residents and visitors. Tony Hsieh is a visionary and has done a lot for Las Vegas, especially the downtown area. This company model may have influenced many organizations to change their daily operations. Interesting tour.
