We took a private tour from Las Vegas to the West Rim/Skywalk of the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam. I cannot say enough wonderful thinks about this excursion. We had a group of 11 people with 6 kids between the ages of 12 and 18. The kids were not too keen on leaving the hotel at 6 am but by the end of the day they said it was their favorite part of our Vegas trip. Rigo our guide was excellent. He was kind and knowledgeable and engaging. He had fun little "surprises" for us such as an early stop to take photos at the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign (no line because it was so early), special lookout areas and a stop to see and take photos with a herd of horned sheep. The Mercedes van was so comfortable and had outlets to charge your phone and cold water. We took Detours advice on timing and we were so glad we did. We had no lines or crowds but as we left the Canyon the parking lot was full and there was a huge line to get onto the Skywalk and a line of cars to get into the West Rim. Our driver Michael was great too and even accommodated the kids' request to stop on In and Out Burger on the way back to the hotel. It was a perfect day and I am so glad we went with Detours. If you can request Rigo and Michael - do it! They made the day. Worth every penny!

Anyone can drive (or be driven) from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. What changes that drive from aimless sightseeing to an engaging field trip is your guide. Without trying to sound melodramatic, "Jimmy Vegas" of Detours of Nevada was the quintessential guide. His knowledge from the start of the tour to finish was practically encyclopedic (or "Wikipedic" nowadays...), and he presents the information in a way that makes you feel like he's having a conversation with you, instead of reciting a script. In fact, he made a point to tell my family that's how he conducts his narrative, because it engages with his clients.
Our tour was a private one from Mandalay Bay to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. As my family has never taken a private tour before, we were apprehensive of spending 10 hours with a man we'd have never met until he picked us up in the SUV that morning. But Jimmy put us at ease by making a quick stop at the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign for a picture, then sharing breakfast with us in Boulder City. Since we left early (6:30 am), we had enough time to go at a moderate pace and still beat the tour buses to the Grand Canyon. Given Detours' relationship with the Hualapai Tribe, they are allowed to drive the SUV directly into the National Park, so we were able to get to the West Rim Skywalk before the crowds came. We declined to go on it, but it was really nice to know that we weren't going to have to wait for an hour if we wanted to do it. We were also able to traverse from place to place without having to slog on the shuttle buses.
As we moved from place to place, Jimmy suggested the best places and poses for memorable photos, and everything came out sensationally. He was very considerate of my elderly parents, making sure they were taken care of in the 100-degree heat. And somehow, he presented Guano Point in such a way that my wife, son and I - who were terrified of even considering going to the top of it when we pulled up in the SUV - actually scaled it and relished the incredible view. (He knew the "secret, easy way" to get to the top.)
On the way back, he made a point to stop at a local rock shop so my wife could fulfill a promise to her father, and also had a "wildlife surprise" for us in Boulder City. Jimmy was consistently going above and beyond the entire day without appearing like he was going above and beyond.
You never know when the memories of a lifetime will etch themselves indelibly in your mind. Our Las Vegas to Grand Canyon trip has managed to get there for us, and it's all due to Jimmy. If you are giving even an inkling of a thought of booking a private tour to the Grand Canyon and can get Jimmy as your guide, book it ASAP.

We just got back from a private tour with Detours. Jimmy Vegas was the best tour guide anyone could ever want. He had knowledge about everything from Vegas history, to Grand Canyon facts, to Hoover Dam history and everything in between. Our trip was our family of four. Our children are 10 (son) and 14 (daughter). They actually were wanting to listen and learn, because Jimmy made it so interesting. The private tour was more expensive, but it was worth every penny. The flexibility of making stops when and where we wanted, and staying longer or shorter times in certain places based on our level of interest made it perfect. We left out from our hotel in Vegas at 7:00am, stopped on the way to Grand Canyon to look/learn about Joshua Tree National Forest, and then went on to the GC. We took our time at the West Rim and got all of the photos we could possibly want. Then, on the way back we stopped by the Hoover Dam for pics and the stopped and ate dinner in Boulder City. It was by far the best tour we’ve been on. If we come back to this area again, we will definitely tour with them, and I would recommend anyone else visiting this area to do so as well.

Hertz was out of cars, so we decided to use this company to get to Zion and back. The park is beautiful, and absolutely must see. But out of a full 10 to 12 hour day, we were probably in the car for about 8. There were four passengers total, and it was a Lincoln navigator, which frankly was too small. The far back seat was very cramped and you had to fold one of the seats to get in and out. So the vehicle was too small for the purpose in my opinion. Also, our tour guide was not exactly to my taste, he mostly spoke about himself and his adventures over his lifetime, whereas I would’ve been more interested in hearing about the park, nature, etc. when he was not talking, he was singing to himself or playing the radio without asking us if we wanted to listen. He was a very likable guy, but when you are stuck in small vehicle for 10 or 12 hours, those things may get to you.

This 1-day private tour was fantastic. Rigo, our tour guide, was great - he was super knowledgeable; the effort he made with us made the day feel comfortable, enjoyable and like we were out with a friend. The car was perfect, super comfortable for our family of 5 (with teens). GC West itself was awesome, unforgettable. I really look forward to doing another tour with Detours.

Our short-ish return trip from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam was professionally handled, with a friendly and informative driver.
James was a great guide, offering insights and commentary throughout the trip.
The hoover dam visit was fascinating, with a good on-site guide and visitor centre.
Will definitely be using Detours again next year in Vegas.

My husband and I did a three day tour from Las Vegas to Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Valley, Bryce, and Zion Canyon. We were actually a repeat because we had traveled with Detours in March to the Grand Canyon and Sedona. Rachel did such a fantastic job arranging a terrific itinerary from the start.. Our tour guide for three day, Jimmy Vegas, was also fantastic -- so informative and entertaining too. We have already recommended them to one person and we just returned a few days ago. Highly recommend.

We had an excellent day at Bryce Canyon led by the legend himself Jimmy Vegas. Jimmy was knowledgeable, funny and overall great guy. He made me and my family feel like we’ve known each other for years. We were able to spend some quality time at one of the country’s true natural wonders. Highly recommended!

Excellent small group tour of Hoover Dam. No lines, very little traffic. We learned a lot about Boulder City and Lake Mead. Very friendly and accommodating tour guide. James Phelps.

When I was a child my mother loved to vacation in national parks with we kids riding shotgun during her vacation time and some 40+ years ago, I remember Bryce Canyon as the most magic, most colorful, most awe-inspiring park of them all.
After my trip with Gregg, that wonderful experience is enhanced by the well-organized, well-informed info that Gregg brought to the tour. Pickup was on-time, the vehicle immaculate, a small breakfast was provided and we stopped for lunch at a sandwich shop just before entering Bryce Canyon.
Gregg is very comfortable to be around and is happy to answer questions. I've found the more interest the tour-goers show, the more you will get out of the tour. Feel free to ask questions. Guides won't know everything but they know a great deal.
Bryce Canyon can be very crowded so be prepared to hunt around for a parking spot. We were supposed to stop at four points but we were so moved by the brilliant hoodoos, glowing garnet and ruby in the sun, that we asked Gregg if we could spend our allotted time there instead of driving to the other spots and circling for a parking space. Gregg graciously said, "Of course", and we had a grand time hiking, staring at the overlook, looking at petroglyphs, formations and reading the plaques that tell the story of this marvelous park and its history.
This trip was a highlight of my life, and Gregg, thank you so much for everything.

You should know: If you're in a private vehicle, particularly, the national parks service has taken it upon themselves to close down the parks, or portions of the park, if and when they feel like it (of course after extorting $30 from you). They'll tell you, "The park is too crowded. We're closing the park." Don't bother asking if you get your $30 back. Outrageous, over-reaching and paramilitary style. Not a fan at all. In spite of this obstruction to "national parks" belonging "to the people", Detours is equiped to handle this and still provide you with mind-boggling views.

Is the price the same if I do not need a pick up. (I will drive to where ever the tour starts)?

I agree with the previous respondent... we have now taken two tours with Detours of Nevada and our drivers gave us so much background information and history on the drive, wouldn't have missed it for the world.

There was plenty of water and juice available on the tour van, plus the frequent stops gave us ample opportunity to buy anything else that we needed.
